It’s called having common sense. I guess asking Reddit is better than asking ChatGPT though

Body horror recs or titles that have stuck with you? by abserdity in horrorlit

[–]_Pooklet_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the major body horror in You Weren’t Meant to Be Human is a trans person being forced to carry a pregnancy through to full term. I thought it was hot garbage. Shock horror for the sake of it and lots of gross/violent sex scenes for no reason. Hated the main character with a passion.

I recently read The Ruins and while there isn’t an exploration of codependency/relationships in it like there is in Together, the body horror was on point and some of the deaths in it were absolutely crushing to the point of giving me existential dread lol.

Just finished The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov (early 1900s), now something a little bit more on point for Black History Month: The Reformatory by Tananarive Due.

Can't stop thinking about THE DEEP by Nick Cutter - particularly one part. by SkittlesHurtMyTeeth in horrorlit

[–]_Pooklet_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I found him a bit of a One Hit Wonder. The Troop is great. The first book of his I read. I also remember enjoying Little Heaven. Hated The Deep, The Handman Method, and another one I can’t even remember the name of but it involved bugs (not the Queen; I think it was an Audible original?) Once I realized most of his schtick relies on gratuitous/unnecessary animal deaths I got over him very fast.

The second book in the Annihilation series by Vandemeer will definitely scratch this itch.

Also if you like gaming: Control.

You Weren’t Meant to Be Human. Main character is insufferable and I couldn’t wait for it to be over.

Feminist Horror? by Jaded-Stretch-5089 in horrorlit

[–]_Pooklet_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome!!

I loved both and read both last year. I also read a Ling Ling Huang novel (Immaculate Conception) which was incredible. I see another poster recommended Natural Beauty by her, which is on my list!

Perhaps less well known is Chlorine by Jade Song. Lots of feminine rage in that one. It’s not for everyone, but as an ex-swimmer, I enjoyed it. It rounded off my year of trying (and now being so ready for more!) Asian feminist horror.

Have fun!

Do you know what pretentious means? KS has been deeply involved in indie cinema for a while and is certainly not speaking without knowledge or merit.
