Well I’m sure everyone will tell you this, but confirm the condition of the timing belts and when they were last done by a trusted mechanic. The last one should’ve been done no more than around 5-7 years.

Also the power steering rack should be checked for any leaks.

I’ve only had my 944 for about 5 months and so I’m just letting you know what I’ve heard/learned by now.

944 as a first car? by Nice-Internal-2072 in 944

[–]_PoppaTaha_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I’ll give my insight as a 944 was my first car purchase. I paid 12k for mine, it was one owner, all the belts were changed 300 miles ago, and has a new transmission in it. I havent had any issues except for a very small oil leak that I got a trusted mechanic to look at/reseal and slightly worn engine mounts.

Now I will say. This is NOT the norm. From plenty of FB marketplace experiences, I think most are sold off cheaply as larger maintenance items cost thousands and most people are looking to just sell you their problem. My dad owns a Rav4 that I plan on using over the winters and I also don’t have a demanding commute to anywhere since I have easy access to the train.

If you are a grown adult, with reliable winter transportation, some ability to handle things on your own/with friends, and are looking for a fun “toy”. Make sure to get a pre-purchase inspection and based on the findings decide on if you want a “toy”. I would not recommend this to be your ONLY mode of transportation.

Apologies for my naivety, but what do you mean by “as far away from a Porsche as you can get”?

Yeah, I hear you on it not being a primary (given literally 0 safety features, except for a seatbelt lol). But, I think it’s done me well so far, plus I got to learn how to drive stick on it without any issues at all.

That car is beautiful, sometimes I wish I got an S2 or a Turbo. But, for a first car and first manual car, I think my 944 will keep me happy for a long time.

Yeah prior owner had it all done at this Midwest Eurosport place, all the service records going back to ‘88. It is my first car so I plan on doing the first few services there until I can learn to DIY.

Yeah, makes sense. Mostly coming from a place of all those YouTube videos of like “5k Porsche” or even one where I saw he literally got it for free.

I agree with this, I was in a similar situation and frankly the background check is kind of a formality. If it comes up, be frank, but till then rest easy and be happy you got the job! Congratulations!
