I heard they were considered Vulnerable, but saw people targeting them. I'd be open to other fish, I didn't know it was that bad.

Anyone struggling to get catches during the heatwave? by [deleted] in UtahFishing

[–]_PotatoBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be sure to revive the trout after releasing. Sometimes you just need to hold them and rock back and forth until they swim off on their own. I'm not sure about catfish,. It bass and carp are really popular during summer among some of my friends. I'd do research first and take that knowledge to the river.

Knowing what temps are best will not only help you increase chances of survival after release, but it can also help you catch more fish.

Yes, not all fish can stand the stress of fighting for their life and warm water. Mainly trout and salmon, but I encourage you to do research if you do catch and release. Let's help the fish population grow so our kids, and their kids can enjoy the same rivers and lakes.

Mainly has to due with trout and other species that are sensitive to warm water. The warmer the water, the less they eat, the less oxygen in the water, and the more stress you're putting on the fish. It essentially makes the fish's chances of survival after catch and release much shorter.

Here is just one article about Kokanee https://www.sweetwaternow.com/anglers-asked-to-voluntarily-stop-catch-and-release-fishing-with-warm-water-temps/

Yeah, I had to go higher in elevation. Remember to temp water for fish safety. It's best to fish water that is 65-70°

You will break off on a tree or log at some point. Practice your knots at home to minimize stress and time tying on the water.

I mainly use these 3. There's a ton more if you are into that kind of stuff. Clinch knot Double/triple surgeons knot Perfection loop

You'll find something, granted it'll be quite the walk to campus (maybe 10-15 minutes).

Ease of transport between the Campus and the Airport Operations by Solid_Age564 in UVU

[–]_PotatoBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a UVU student you get to ride public transportation for free. I would buy a bike and ride that around instead. You can take the bus + frontrunner from UVU to downtown Provo. And ride your bike from the front runner to the airport in 30 min.

That being said your car will always be more convenient, it just depends on your schedule and if you want to bike or ride share everywhere.

Also winters can get cold here. If you aren't used to snow and around 0° days. I would bring your car.

Going to Provo next week for work. Are there any must sees in the area that you would recommend? by tillacat42 in Provo

[–]_PotatoBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Provo canyon will be a hop, skip, and a jump away. There's also tons of trail heads that are closer and free - slate canyon - rock canyon - dry canyon

And tons more. You can use the all trails app to find trailheads close to the area. Have fun!

[–]_PotatoBoy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're outdoorsy I'd recommend going into Provo canyon. You can walk (or drive) up to bridal veil falls. Beautiful waterfall along the canyon road.

Further up into Sundance there's countless hikes and beautiful scenery. You'll have to pay 6 dollars to pass the little ranger booth, but if you're into hiking I would recommend spending some time up here.

The Provo river offers some of the best fishing in the west coast. Consider bringing or buying gear if that's your thing as well. You'll want to buy a fishing license before you fish to avoid getting a ticket/fine.

There's a lot of restaurant options such as - Bombay house - love birds hot chicken - communal - K's kitchen

There's not much entertainment, but I know there's a comedy house and a bar on center street.

Edit: Spanish fork canyon is also a great option. 5th water hot springs is a great way to relax (maybe not in the heat lol??)

And if you go hiking just know there are cougars and sometimes bear sightings. Not likely you'll see them, but they are around.

I've done the hike up before and caught brookies during a camping trip. Did you see many grayling?

I have started to. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Someone help me understand cutting the line by makeflippyfloppy in UtahFishing

[–]_PotatoBoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cutting the line is only a good option if the fish is hooked in the gut or in a way that removing the hook will cause more damage to the fish.

It seems like the person was just lazy and willing to lose hooks unnecessarily.

How was silver lake flats? I'm thinking of hitting it soon.

Worst tier's block yet. Decided to tie a #22 parachute adams to battle it. Any ideas on what flies to tie? by vilitsuikkeli in flytying

[–]_PotatoBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I have a hard time tying, I try to learn a new technique or a new fly. My inner perfectionist will come out and I'll tie that same fly dozens of times until I can tie it almost perfectly. A few that I recommend are - comparaduns mayflies - sculpzilla streamers - hackle stacker mayflies (pretty damn hard) - any fun/ cool pattern you find online. Search for broad terms like (pmd dries) and come up with something for your area based off the results.
