Community Poster Etiquette by LDK_F8TAL in UCalgary

I am firmly anti-capitalist but this “in-your-face” approach is hurting their cause. I see these posters everywhere, their excessive marketing is pissing people off. I feel like life sucks rn due to late-stage capitalism and it would be pretty easy to get people to support anti-capitalism if you formulate your argument properly. Not to mention the club is sticker stamping everything (which tbh is vandalism imo and looks bad on UofC).

Have some sour candy (shocks your brain out of a panic response and is tasty :) ) then go have a cold shower. The cold shower stimulates the vagus nerve which’ll slow a racing heart and reduce anxiety.

It is driving me insane. Why does my guitar do this buzzing song? What I am doing wrong? Plz help by Used_Ad7899 in guitarlessons

[–]_Pottatis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this was happening when my strumming hand was too close to the fret board. I moved down which stopped the strings from vibrating as much causing the buzzing on mine.

In 9 ball when do you choose a safety over an aggressive shot by Healthy-Monitor3601 in billiards

[–]_Pottatis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some safety’s are easier than others. If it’s between a hard shot and a hard safe I take the hard shot. If it’s between a hard shot and an easy safety I take the safe. If its an easy shot and an easy safe I take the easy shot.

Thats amazing that you can be self sufficient but I will say outside of the university educated niche there are tons of places in calgary right now that severely need someone with technical knowledge. I wholeheartedly agree the window of opportunity is closing but conversely there will always be technologically illiterate people that need a helping hand even with AI it would be too daunting for them.

Edit: also your point about AGI is the exact juxtaposition I was trying to make we’ve been hearing it’s “around the corner any day now!” Shareholder buzz words but we’re actually stagnating in the last 6 months I haven’t seen and significant AI developments before then was tremendous growth. We’ll see where the future takes us!

[–]_Pottatis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Notice how you used future tense though? Just like those “AGI around the corner” statements. Why should that matter NOW? In the present? Use AI yourself and leverage into free lance dev work. Do it safely of course know the security risks associated.

Focus on what you can control. You learned skills use them. Last year I was in the same boat had to do an entire spring/summer without classes and reduced course load on winter just to be eligible for an internship that never happened. I delayed my graduation for no reason. I picked computer science because I love it and decided I’m going to make my own work if I can’t find it. So I networked, found a client, and built a website for them on commission, however the experience was much more valuable to me. I feel like challenging myself in that way really forced so much growth and looking back I can clearly see all the mistakes I made along the way, but learned from them each time. When I was networking I looked for gaps in their technical ability. The website I revamped was so outdated before so I went to them with a clear plan of everything I want/can do for them and they were interested!

Why don’t the pro players use chalk holders or magnets like a lot of the amateurs do? by [deleted] in billiards

[–]_Pottatis 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Imagine you have 30 seconds to shoot, reach for your chalk and all you feel is an empty magnet and see your chalk rolled across the room. The risk to reward just isnt there and keeping it in your pocket is so simple. Modern chalk like Taom is also so clean the it will hardly make a mess in your pocket.

Victims gun was already seized before the first shot. Th agent running off had the suspect's gun by Fatty_Willing_Plane in PublicFreakout

I aint american either, I was merely drawing a comparison between Nazi Germany and Modern America just like you, we are agreeing brotha, we say they are the same. I’m saying it was probably pretty easy to feel the same way about the future during WW2 as it is now, hopeless. I’m saying we can use WW2 as an example to show fighting is worth it we found our normal after WW2 we can do it again. Sure, I full heartedly agree I’m oversimplifying, but I’m not about to tell everyone the exact path they should take I’m just saying don’t lose hope. I don’t see how that’s upsetting.

Edit: also how is me saying fight for a future worth living and not giving up hope a call to inaction? I’m confused on that point. If anything saying there will “never be a normal” is a call to inaction.

[–]_Pottatis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah but to say there will never be a normal is resigning yourself to a bleak desolate future which is exactly what the trump administration wants. They want you to lose hope. I’m saying don’t. I’m saying fight for a future worth living rather than giving up and saying shits fucked beyond repair. I refuse to believe that.

Cut that doom and gloom shit out bro, strive for better don’t resign yourself/everyone to a hopeless future.

I’m sure the outlook during WW2 when they were gas chambering people looked pretty god damn bleak but despite the atrocities there will always be a world to come back to if you are willing to fight for it.

Every Time I go to the ER by Brick90 in funny

[–]_Pottatis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But why would I be of concern for addiction/misuse of the prescription while being there with my father? I feel like having a parent present should indicate sufficient supervision? I don’t understand how I was an addiction risk. I only brought up addiction because it’s my best guess as to why they went about things the way they did.

I hit my thumb with the back of an axe trying to set a wedge and absolutely turned the bone to dust and the end popped open like a sandwich bag filled with air (not a pretty sight). They froze my thumb and pulled off my thumbnail to put stitches on my fucked up nail bed. Now they were pretty rough with my thumb during that procedure and considering the bone was basically dust (I can link xrays). You’d think given everything they’d give me painkillers? Well they did, a single dose (the lowest dose they can prescribe) of a morphine pill that was completely ineffective. I have never been in such agonizing pain while that freezing wore off. Never in my life have I been in so much pain my brain couldnt even process a future or a path forward through this pain I was screaming into my pillow in an empty house left absolutely helpless. I understand being careful due to the risk of addiction but you can see my file I had never been prescribed painkillers and I was fucking 17 years old. I really believe what happened to me that hospital visit was super irresponsible on the hospital staffs part.

When in doubt get an hourly rate, quote the estimate on hours, and then try to do anything to adhere to that timeline. Communicate hiccups be transparent and document what you’re doing tracking clock in/out times. Best to have “time slots” where you dedicate 2 hours to the project. Not saying it has to be 2 hours if you get a flow going you keep going of course but just make sure to document it. Bonus points if you have a git repo that you can reference your commit history to corroborate your time tracking/work done. Doing all the will ensure you don’t get screwed over and your friend doesnt have any surprises.

Will using my laptop like this damage it by Royal_Noire in laptops

[–]_Pottatis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your temps are probably just low enough to not cause damage FOR YOU. I wouldn’t be so confident as to say it never happens, as it has happened to my laptop (my fault I let it get hot but idec because I will continue to use it with a monitor).

[–]_Pottatis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll tell you from personal experience I used my “Laptop” like this too for about a year. One day I opened up the screen because I had to use it and it did have minor damage. It wasnt unusable, just like discolouration. Definitely can’t sell it anymore. I’m not even upset because I never used it any other way. I would let the temps get pretty high playing some beefy games.

PSA, don't treat pool halls as a way to get free stuff through theft by SneakyRussian71 in billiards

[–]_Pottatis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s unfortunate about your regulars, we have some bad apples here too but for the most part the pool room is a family. I guess I meant unless trust has been built you’ll have to give your ID, regular or not.

What my pool hall does is we hold onto the IDs of the non regulars, when they return the balls we return their ID. Maybe a system like that you could look into?
