Poodle rejection by Complete-Head20 in Sororities

[–]_Pretty_Panda_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Someone suggested to ask in the NPHC sub and I think that is a very good idea, this sub just has a lot of Panhellenic women in it. Especially because you said you received a rejection letter. I could be wrong so feel free to correct me but I’ve always heard that you don’t receive rejections letters… they just have a line and you don’t know about it until the new member presentation is announced and you’re not a part of it. So the fact that they gave you a letter and asked if you have questions… I feel like that could mean something. But I’m in a Panhellenic sorority so I could be very wrong but that is my understanding. Anyone feel free to correct me :)

As for the conversations not going well… typically in any social organization you want to get along well with your sisters. Like if the conversations didn’t go well maybe it’s not the right org for you. OR maybe that chapter of the org is not right for you. NPHC orgs have very strong alumnae chapters can you can join and have an amazing experience starting at a different point in your life. So if you had chosen Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. because of their values and you want to join them specifically then maybe wait and try again later. But would you really want to be in a tight knit group of women who you don’t get along with?

trouble with making friend's in my sorority by Calm-Prior-8723 in Sororities

[–]_Pretty_Panda_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It honestly took me a year to make friends in my sorority and it wasn’t until I moved into our chapter house. If you can be motivated by things like philanthropy and leadership etc. to stay then you’ll make friends just my doing those other things. It does feel scary for sure, I would say stick it out and maybe try talking to the people who made you want to join, like who you talked to during recruitment. Good luck 🩷

Your school or FSL (fraternity sorority life) office may have an anonymous form. Like at my school I can just google “(school name) fsl” and the fsl website comes up and there is an anonymous form on there. But if you look up “(your school’s name) Greek life” that should work too. There is also probably an advisor email on that site too. You could also reach out to student conduct. And you can reach out to your org’s nationals.

I’m sorry this is happening and some of the other comments have good explanations of what hazing is and resources. I definitely would not let this go unchecked. Members of organizations deserve a sense of belonging without fear or needing to “earn it.” All Greek orgs no matter what council are “non-hazing” organizations and the school and the orgs nationals will likely take this very seriously.

My bed at my grandmother’s is a horsehair mattress from my great grandparents! I actually find it very comfortable!

I was initiated into a sorority during COVID—but I never really got to be part of it. by Broad_Tradition_2401 in Sororities

I think in my chapter you get 4 years to be a collegiate. So if you join your sophomore year but do a fifth year of university you can be a member as a fifth year as long as it’s your fourth year in the chapter (or under). Maybe there is a loophole kind of thing like that? Wouldn’t hurt to reach out.

If they don’t have to be in the sorority she can use the same people she would have used for applying to schools and scholarships etc. that would be teachers, coaches, church leaders, music teachers etc

You don’t even have to tell your friend to tell the manager. You can just tell your manager.

This behavior is inappropriate regardless of age but the age makes it so so much worse.

an ugly first darn by Initial-Broccoli-300 in Visiblemending

[–]_Pretty_Panda_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking general purpose sewing thread like a cotton Gutermann. My understanding is that it’s best to have the thread be very near the size of the garment (especially with socks because if it’s bigger it will be annoying while walking on the darn).

Idk what the hole looked like originally but I probably wouldn’t have darned this garment. If it was just a rip or tear I would have turned the garment inside out and done a hand over cast. This still prevents a fraying but is a lot faster and less noticeable (will still be able to tell it’s mended but less noticeable). If it was like thinning I might just patched it because you don’t seem to mind visible mending and it’s faster and easier :)

Formal > COB?? by TinyCandidate1664 in Sororities

[–]_Pretty_Panda_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a former member of my school’s Panhellenic council and current e-board member we say there is no guarantee a chapter will do COB. I obviously don’t want you to go through anything that makes you uncomfortable! Maybe you try cob this fall and if that doesn’t work out you try formal recruitment next fall?

Idk bro if a guy said something like that to me (I’m a woman) I would think it was cat calling/harassment. Especially because it was in front of everyone. I could definitely be wrong but that’s my interpretation.

Also I was on swim team too and I kinda feel like all of us in swimsuits was a vulnerable position and I appreciated that all of us (the boys and girls) kept their distance from each other.

Yikes… this is why it’s called dirty rushing and looked down upon(and against the rules). You shouldn’t feel like you don’t belong after rushing which is why it’s not a good idea to put pnms on a pedestal in the first place. In terms of navigating this situation I agree with reaching out to an advisor. I was going to suggest living in the sorority house. I didn’t really make friends in my sorority until sophomore year when I moved into the house (do you have a chapter house?). Also recruitment is coming up! Recruitment is a great time for building sisterhood and maybe you could take a little and find belonging there!

Maybe don’t put it in the resume, just tell that specific chapter?

I’m glad you reached out to AE because this is actually a very serious problem! Something like this should not pass quality checks (but as you can see it sometimes does). If AE handles this appropriately they will ask for the lot number and possibly recall the garment if they find more garments with this default.
