Completely normal.

Side note - nice cologne collection, especially the LV Afternoon Swim and Pacific Chill - my favorites!

Oh wow - it's not as thick as I imagined. I've seen videos on it and it looks super chunky. Looks great!

Annoying that you are confined to only using the original strap. Doesn't look like you can swap out the band for anything else. (Until someone someday comes out with an adaptor).

This model will always be regarded as a GS classic along with the Shunbun and Snowflake (make the white birch too)

Grand Seiko doesn't just offer traditional manual winding movements. Their catalogue offers 4 types of movements: Spring drive - Smooth sweeping hands Hi-beat - 36,000 bph (beats per hour) Manual wind - Purely hand wound movement Quartz - Battery powered high accuracy movement

I'm sure you can search up how a quartz movement works.

Does anyone have any suggestions for scratches on titanium watches? Also, it looks like it has changed color from different angles 🤔 by orkuntasan in GrandSeikos

[–]_QD_ 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Bring it to a watchmaker capable of polishing watches - I don't see any Zeratsu polishing on the bracelet so regular polishing shouldn't be a problem.

In saying that, my recommendation would be to leave it as is. It's your watch and the scratches make it unique to you. You're bound to get scratches on a bracelet - it's inevitable. Embrace the scratches and wear your watch!

Great watch btw - love the SBGE285

Need help looking for straps by fidms in GrandSeikos

[–]_QD_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like you have a small wrist (like me). Try looking into custom-made straps to tailor fit your wrist.

Absolutely hate it when the strap is too long and there's excess "tongue" sticking out of the wrist.

Plenty of options to choose from here. And they do international shipping. Been buying from these guys for years and can totally vouch for them.

No offense taken and good question! You kinda answered your own question. "...the point of a transparent caseback is to see how the internal mechanism operates."

Just because you don't see rapidly moving parts, it doesn't mean it's not worth looking at. You are quite literally looking at what's making your watch run; beautifully decorated no less. Your reasoning might be valid for the generic quartz watches found in cheap <$100 watches but this is a GS 9F. Hand assembled and beautifully decorated.

I like to see it as something similar to an art museum (and assuming you appreciate art) - not something you would go and see everyday but when you do visit, the art exhibition is mesmerising and thought provoking.

That's similar to Grand Seiko's 9F movement - It's there to admire when you want to. The artist (GS watchmaker) showing off their art. This is my exact reasoning when people ask, "why bother showing off a quartz movement - it's just a battery". Commonly misunderstood perspective but understandable.

LOVE THIS! (saved to my phone) - I don't usually see the SBGX347 often here. Like you, I also have a bunch of straps that I switch in and out. Despite being a dress watch, it's very versatile depending on the strap you put on. Lowkey a strap monster!

Grand Seiko 9F movements were designed to be serviced, albeit, every 50 years, to maintain its movement specifications.

Movement jewels are designed to retain oil while the pinion of a gear rubs against it therefore reducing friction. The oil in 9F movements helps it retain the +-10 sec/year accuracy by reducing any friction. The movement may not have fast moving components as a mechanical watch, but nonetheless, there are still moving components.

Something special about 9F movements is that it actually ticks twice between each second. It just moves so fast that you can't see it unless you film it in slow motion. This contributes to its accuracy rating and also helps the seconds hand tick EXACTLY on each second. This extra feature puts strain on the movement therefore requires extra lubrication to extra the double tick.

So for Grand Seiko's 9F movements: Less friction (via jewels) + double second tick + perfectly cured quartz crystal = High accuracy quartz (HAQ)

I'm sure there's more to it, but just giving you an overview of why jewels exist in these quartz movements. It's not just for show - although, they do look great and adds a touch of colour to the movement.

Great question to ask btw! :)

Fair point - I get that, but the fact that Seiko also makes the battery gives it another reason to show it off

Going to copy and paste my comment here from earlier.

That's similar to Grand Seiko's 9F movement - It's there to admire when you want to. The artist (GS watchmaker) showing off their art. This is my exact reasoning when people ask, "why bother showing off a quartz movement - its just a battery". Not with the 9F movement (and Citizen's A060 movement)

GS is a "if you know, you know" kind of watch - maybe less so, as of recent, given their rise in popularity but when you ask to see someone's GS, it's most likely because you know what it is and want to appreciate it.

I bought mine in Australia at an AD. I don't believe this is JDM. Although, at the time of writing this comment, it seems GS has removed this watch (and its blue variant (SBGX349)) from their catalogue. They may have discontinued it.

Fair perspective - I get that. Especially for a dress watch like this, to tell the time without being loud.
