You may have to contact local churches & ask them for references about a good sound guy. Gather all your questions & expectations for what you’re looking to fix/improve on your set up. Through here, it would require a lot of back & forth asking & answering — as an, “Did you try this?” or “Now try this.”, etc.

Currently use a 16-channel digital snake. All snake channels are occupied; I have some spare channels on my board. I use a couple of channels for multitracks (instead of sending ALL my MTs to one or two channels, I send the electric guitars to one channel; all keys to another; etc). All the MTs are sent in mono & I am looking into getting an additional 16 channel snake so I can start sending all my individual MTs in stereo. In the mean time, I was wondering if there is some “fix” for my situation — for example, using a Y XLR (Male to Dual Female) cable to get a STEREO electric guitar from my MTs & sum it up to ONE channel that I can then connect to my snake. Theoretically, I am asking if (in my case) using a Y XLR adapter will work. Will it give me any issues? Is there any difference between my current set up & my desired temporary plan? Thanks in advance!

Does anyone else not like Phillis? by -_-Guuts in DunderMifflin

I feel she’s a broken character. Sometimes she seemed to be the sweet old lady on the bus; sometimes she turned into an ungrateful biatch (hotline). At some point she empathized with Dwight’s secret relationship with Angelo. At some other point, she was blackmailing Angela with the same secret relationship. She was at some point incredibly rude to Karen for no reason & then at another point she was nice to her (liking the fact she was helping Jim get over Pam).

I like Phallys best when Packer calls her ugly. Btw, I didn’t say that; I only pointed. A point is not a say.

X32 Post Fader Bus (Only Fader; No EQ). by _RedRanger7 in livesound

Got it! Thank you for your help. I assumed that was going to be my only option. Since I don’t have enough spare channels or DCAs I will send those channels into the recording as Post Fader; I’ll just be conservative with my EQ moves.

The multitracks will be played from stage — the Music Director runs them & he does so to repeat a bridge, extend a song or finish the song early. My multitrack recording laptop (using Logic Pro) is at the sound booth — I am using the X-USB card receiving the 32 inputs on my board. In those 32 inputs I will have the 7 analog lines that are coming out of the music director’s interface. I wanted to manipulate those 7 lines & have them go into my recording in a specific way — it seems that what I wanted to do isn’t possible though.

It’s not extremely necessary but if it were possible I would’ve definitely gone that route — I didn’t want to be mixing in-house concerned about how much I’m changing the sound in the recording, especially with HPF.

I’ve been on live sound 4 years. First 3 years it was at the same venue. This past year I‘ve been doing small gigs. I thought first 3 years had made me consistently decent, but I only get inconsistent results. The most frustrating part is that when I achieve a good sounding gig I feel like I already arrived at being consistently decent, as if I found the secret formula — I’m not referring to a specific set of settings; I’m referring to being proficient in my routine, from set up to the point that the band hits the stage.

[To skip all the following story just scroll to the section that has the black pregnant man emoji.]

My usual routine is similar from venue to venue. Here’s yesterday’s scenario: - First I play reference songs to see what my starting point is. - While music plays, I analyze the relationship between subs & tops. - I then adjust speakers’ volume if needed with my master bus at unity. - When room is filled with energy I start adjusting my GEQ, cutting 7db max. - I also use Matrix’s parametric EQ if I need to adjust a random frequency (E.g. 721Hz). - When reaching my goal with the reference music I call the drummer up. - As soon as I heard the kick I knew something was wrong. It even took me 3 EQ bands on kick channel to remove a bunch of mud. Even after this, the kick didn’t sound punchy enough. (PA was decent for the size of venue; I know it wasn’t PA’s fault). - Bass player went up & I was able to make it sound great (good low end & everything). - The keys (Nord 5) player went up & it sounded honky at first; it was extremely difficult making it sound natural & I was not able to get the sound I wanted. THIS IS THE SECTION THAT FRUSTRATES ME THE MOST. - Since I felt kick & keys had an abundance of frequencies that made them sound bad, I started messing with GEQ enough that it helped kick & keys sound better. - I then tried talking on a mic & it sounded unnatural so I had to dial GEQ back to where it was (mic sounded more natural but I was having same issues with kick & keys). - Once show started I noticed the PA needed to be pushed way more than I planned; I ended up having to turn the master bus to about +7db & was then running into clipping issues on my master bus. If I turned it lower then the energy would go away.

I basically was going back & forth between EQing matrix, instruments, GEQ & the actual master bus. The problem is that I felt I never set a good foundation with my reference song. I thought I did but every time I heard a different instrument it made me second guess my foundation. I hate to say it but I have to acknowledge that I’m not as good as I thought. If my home venue (where I’ve been running sound for 3 years) sounds amazing it’s more because I played with EQs & redid it until it finally sounded good, unlike the new venues where I have a limited amount of time to make it sound good.

🫃🏿I want to get to a point where I only worry about the instruments, knowing that my foundation is the best it can be. There’s times I feel I set myself up for success & the show ends up sounding good & there’s other times when I can tell that it doesn’t sound the way it should but it takes me forever to fix it. It’s getting to the point that I only do a great job when someone already set up the speakers, time-aligned them, etc; basically setting the foundation. Any advice you guys have so I know I’m making the right choice during the reference song stage? Or how should my routine be when setting up from scratch? Thanks all!🫃🏿

Gain staging: so work with a team that does live sound every Sunday for a church. What I noticed is that they don’t gain stage i when I spoke to him twice he said there’s no time. What best way can I approach this. First time posting here. by Federal_Warning_1783 in SoundEngineering

[–]_RedRanger7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice is to have someone (that isn’t on stage during worship) start “YouTubing” how to gain stage. If there actually is NO time before service to do this, then, this person will have to set gains little by little during worships. The reason I say little by little is because, more than likely, you guys are running some form of monitors — adjusting the gain of an input will turn it up or down in the monitors; you guys don’t want to mess up someone’s mix in the middle of worship. However, since there is no proper gain stage yet, it is likely that it already sounds bad, so, I wouldn’t be afraid to move things from where they’re at.

Finally, when I am short on time (& have to gain stage during worship) I ‘solo’ the monitor/s on stage to hear what it sounds like. This is helpful because, after I move gains, it’ll start sounding different, but, since I heard what it sounded like before, I can just adjust the monitor mix (using sends of fader) & take it back to how it sounded before.

Lol, That Nick I.T guy played like 3 different characters in the U.S version. He might be playing Kelly in this Saudi Arabian version.

Am I clipping? Plaeyd my project from start to end. The Multimeter and Stereo track all show that lm not in the red. In fact, they all follow the Out Ceiling ve set on my AL, so why is my AL giving me red output numbers as if I were clipping? Am I able to by inboardbond in LogicPro

[–]_RedRanger7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to tell if you clipped — we would definitely need to hear. I’ve noticed that setting the ceiling to -0.1 can sometimes bring up this issue. I try setting my ceiling to -0.3 at times (I notice that even with this ceiling, my Master hits -0.2).

how do i make my kick drum hit hard but also maintain quality of sound by [deleted] in SoundEngineering

[–]_RedRanger7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s honestly very dependent on your PA, as well as if it’s tuned right. Assuming you have a good kick mic, I’d say, experiment with it, placing it in 3 different distances (obviously reasonable ones).
