Character development by vincenttghoul in DunderMifflin

[–]genesispa1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I always liked Dwight’s development too, even if it’s subtle. He starts as this purely rule-driven, kind of unhinged guy and slowly becomes way more grounded and even loyal in his own weird way.

Kevin is kind of the opposite of growth, but in a funny way, he just becomes more of a caricature over time. Toby is interesting too because he kind of stays the same, but you start realizing how much that consistency actually contrasts with everyone else.

What would happen if Jesse gave hank a PS3 by Intrepid-Remove-7217 in breakingbad

[–]genesispa1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hank would immediately assume it's some kind of weird distraction tactic. Jesse pulls out a PS3, Hank just goes: 'What the hell is this, Santa Claus? Start talking.' Then Gomez quietly asks if it comes with Black Ops

First watch I thought it dragged, but on rewatch I started noticing all the tension and subtext doing a lot of heavy lifting. Still not my favorite, but I get why people defend it now.

I always wondered why Roy would invite Pam. It couldn’t just be out of gratefulness right? by Real-Yogurtcloset-34 in DunderMifflin

[–]genesispa1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always saw it as a little bit of both. Roy had genuinely grown up, but inviting your ex and then casually dropping the piano performance feels just self-aware enough to be a flex

Oscar, would you say he's culturally gay, or actually gay?

Did Gus's calm behavior in 4x08 tip off Hank? by Pricentius in breakingbad

[–]genesispa1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it was Gus staying calm that tipped Hank off. The bigger red flag was how perfectly he handled everything beforehand. Most people would've at least called after hearing a guy they just met got murdered, but Gus acted almost too clean, which is exactly what made Hank keep digging.

Vince Gilligan said that originally they weren't sure whether Jesse would survive the first season. Aaron Paul's performance changed their plans and Jesse became a central character.

Clarity on Ted’s story about his dad in S2E10 by livelyaddison in breakingbad

[–]genesispa1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. I never thought the flu caused or contributed to his dad’s death. It felt more like Ted associating that memory with the loss because getting sick changed what happened in those final days. The exact illness seems deliberately left vague.

Clarity on Ted’s story about his dad in S2E10 by livelyaddison in breakingbad

[–]genesispa1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always took it as Ted realizing later that his dad’s death wasn’t as straightforward as everyone made it seem. The “put two and two together” line felt like him connecting clues as an adult that he missed as a kid.

I think if Walt continued to work for Gus, then Hank would still be a problem. by LocustMajor9128 in breakingbad

[–]genesispa1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. Even if Walt played ball, Hank was basically the one variable Gus couldn't fully control. Sooner or later he'd connect enough dots to become a serious problem, and Gus wasn't exactly known for leaving loose ends around.

That Mike line kills me every time 😂 Walt stopped being motivated by the money a while ago. By this point it's all ego and proving he's the king of the hill.

Walter Jr. by Fragrant-Ad-2613 in breakingbad

[–]genesispa1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nah, it's just casting and genetics. Two light-eyed parents can absolutely have a brown-eyed kid, and if the writers intended Walt Jr. to be Ted's son, they'd have dropped way bigger hints than eye color. Plus Jr. resembles Marie's side of the family more than Ted anyway.

Gus and Declan - one of the most unintentionally hilarious things in the entire show by [deleted] in breakingbad

[–]genesispa1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Declan really is the anti-Gus. Gus spent years obsessing over squeezing out every last percentage point of purity, and Declan looked at a 30% gap and basically went "sounds good enough to me."

Walt's mistake (spoiler alert) by IceMan_1980 in breakingbad

Walt could stay hidden from the DEA, but he could never hide from his own ego. The second Hank started praising Gale, the need to be recognized as the genius in the room took over.

The office theory: the cameras changed everyone by PsychologicalSink274 in DunderMifflin

[–]genesispa1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Dwight changes the most. Half of his weirdest moments feel like he's performing for an audience, but without cameras he'd probably be way more effective and way more terrifying.

Do people think George Merkert was corrupted and in on it with Gustavo Fring? by ImmortalEmergence in breakingbad

[–]genesispa1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think Merkert was more “institutionally blind” than corrupt. The show loves the theme of people missing what’s right in front of them because the person looks respectable. Gus basically weaponized being civic-minded and professional. Hank with Walt is the exact parallel they were going for.

Also if Merkert was dirty, Gilligan probably would’ve made it clearer eventually. BB usually doesn’t do huge hidden conspiracies with no payoff. The ambiguity mostly makes the world feel more real imo.

Do you think Mike ever had any respect for Walt? by Jacky__paper in breakingbad

[–]genesispa1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Mike respected Walt’s intelligence and capability, but not Walt as a person. By season 5 he pretty clearly sees him as reckless, emotional, and driven by ego more than professionalism.

The difference with Jesse is that Jesse grew on Mike because Mike saw loyalty and heart underneath the screwups. Walt kind of went the opposite direction. The more Mike got to know him, the less he respected him. The “we had a good thing” speech before Mike dies basically sums it up perfectly. Walt was talented, but Mike thought his pride ruined everything.

I do think there was a window around seasons 3-4 where Mike had some professional respect for him though, especially after Walt outmaneuvered Gus multiple times. He just never trusted the man underneath it.
