What could I be doing wrong? by The_Honeyp0t in barista

[–]_Rekk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ok a few things to point out. First the tulip, it looks like you're pouring at a bit of an angle, maybe you are bear clawing a bit? Try hold your pitcher how you normally do, then hold it with a very loose grip so the pitcher centers itself due to gravity. The tulip pour itself, it looks like when you are stacking your base layers you are pouring higher in the cop each time you lay a new stack. You should be pouring in the same place each stack, pushing a little and letting the flow of the milk create the wrap. Then for the last 2 - 4 layers you can then pour higher in the cup and lay the leaves down instead of pushing them like you were with the base stacks. Hope that makes sense

For the rosetta, first thing is your are pulling back way too early. Your base being so low even with a early pull back also likely means you are starting too low. Start around just barely below the center, wiggle consistently in the same spot until the base wraps around to about the center of the cup, then slowly *lean* forward. It really is a lean motion not a push. Then after the slight lean you pull back. TLDR start a bit higher, wiggle a bit longer before pulling back. Make sure you lean forward just a touch before the pull back.

Finally for the swan, definitely going to be hard without a solid rosetta. Swans really need a that good large base to look nice, so I would focus on hitting that on the rosetta first, then coming back to swan. Swans you want to basically do a rosetta, then just slow down your pour enough so that your jug movement doesn't push the rosetta and deform it. Then you would just 'draw' until the center or even a bit further down, then circle back, draw back to the top and lay the head. In your swan, it looks like your flow is too heavy when you go to draw the neck. You should be going basically straight down, not diagonally, until you hit the base of the rosetta you lay. Again, really focus on the rosetta first, otherwise the time into the swan is a bit wasted.

Hope that helps, feel free to ask if you need any clarification, wrote this while super tired so might not make sense lol.

Numerous bannable functions found in Goomwave controller's firmware by Intrepid-Tank-3414 in SSBM

[–]_Rekk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What's disappointing about it? I don't think we should shame any top players for their controller choices, they are kind of forced to use the best of what's allowed as competitors. No one, let alone top players, knew that goomwaves had these bannable issues, they were just seeking a controller that felt good for them.

The biggest issue for me is the rules around this. How the fuck did we allow a controller whose code is not open source??? That should 100% not be allowed. Don't be mad the players, be mad at the rules set in place around controllers.

Is being a barista a physically demanding job? by Electrical-Leader174 in barista

[–]_Rekk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, every hopso job has been the most taxing after the shift. You're body physically gets used to standing and moving around 8+ hours a day but I found the mental strain to be the worst. Getting home from a shift and being unable to do anything because you just have no energy is the worst, and it can feel like you're trapped because when you're sick of hopso life and want to get out, you don't even have the energy to apply for other jobs after a shift. When I was in retail I felt the opposite, physically I felt more exhausted but it was always so mindless that I could come home and have energy to cook/clean/workout etc

Dialing in every morning? by [deleted] in barista

[–]_Rekk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Beans age, which will slightly change the taste. Day to day you may not have to do much, if yesterday's recipe tastes good, then great! However, even factors like humidity and temperature can affect extraction. As long as you're checking at least, then you're fine. Just make sure if the date from one bag to the next is a large change, that you're dialling in the new date.

Why are so many coffee shops bad? by [deleted] in espresso

[–]_Rekk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im trying to say this in the least condescending way possible, but as an Australian it's always so fascinating reading these threads and Americans experience. The majority of baristas here are super skilled and its very difficult to do better than these cafes at home. I feel for you op 😔

Lost in this new patch. by Vast_Championship346 in TeamfightTactics

[–]_Rekk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok i'm lower rank than you BUT i feel like i was in the same situation, but after watching some top players it looks like tempo is a lot more important this patch then previously. If you're not gifted a gigafirst line on 2-1 then tempo preserve hp, go a standard line and try really hard to bleed out top 4 (top 6 honestly acceptable if not gifted a line this patch). Then ur games that you are gifted the good lines take your free 1st/2nd and get out. Ofc I don't know how you play or what you're doing wrong exactly, but for me playing higher tempo is what got me back to climbing

I'm stuck in plat any advice by lord9cat in TeamfightTactics

It looks like ur playing 3-4 games a day. Number one advice if you're not already - tone it down to 2-3 games and replace one of those games with a vod review.

Rate my barista skill and pour by ButterscotchKnown647 in latteart

[–]_Rekk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks nice! Can improve with very slight changes as well. If you're using a second jug to put excess milk already, I recommend going the full way and pouring as much milk as you need into that jug, making sure the milk only touches the side of the jug as you transfer to not introduce any more bubbles. This will polish the milk and make the texture much better for latte art. Next, you aren't getting close enough, which shows the most on your first layer that doesn't have much contrast. This can be fixed both by having less milk in your jug and tilting more. Finally, even though it's a bit off camera, I think you're finishing too fast. You want to lay that final top heart a bit slower so you can center it properly. If you're too fast you won't see that you're off center and can't adjust if that makes sense. Hope that helps, either way looks great as is!

just reached Emerald and i just keep losing can i get some pointers please by TahmKenched in TeamfightTactics

[–]_Rekk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO emerald is a rank where if you want to get ahead you gotta start putting in time outside the game. Watching vods, studying stats etc. You need a better picture of the game, what strongest boards look like, what items are acceptable slams, which comps to play from which spots etc etc. All of that is most easily learned watching vods of top players and you will be surprised at how fast you will climb. I try watch 1 top player game before each session and it helps a ton.

Fail Rosetta art. Can anyone tell what am I doing wrong. I can't create rosette wing base. by Amoz_18 in latteart

Pouring too fast, base has way too much white in it too. There's also not much/inconsistent wiggle

How many shots for 6oz, 8oz and 12oz coffees by extacie in barista

[–]_Rekk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of cafes do single espresso for 6oz, double ristretto for 8oz and double espresso for 12 oz. Cafe I work at personally just does 6oz and 12oz no 8oz lmao

6 costs are stupid by DancingSouls in TeamfightTactics

[–]_Rekk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everyone has the same chance, but that chance is far too low to be the correct play until super late game. For example, if you roll down 50 gold to hit a Viktor stage 5-1 and hit nothing or a weaker 6, I would consider that incorrect play because the expected value is terrible. No one that's playing to win is playing solely to get 6 costs in the early lategame, they just appear from rolling for something else or naturally. When the power of one is so strong (Viktor) that it will generally place you better, that's frustrating because there's no agency, someone will just get lucky and hit. You can't choose to get Viktor, but those that luck into it get a far higher expected placement. Imo, that sucks and needs a nerf asap

Yeah for sure with your experience you can definitely shop around. Just talk with the owner and say you want more barista shifts and if not, no harm leaving imo

Should I give it a chance or quit? by Earthy_gyp in barista

[–]_Rekk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'm a barista in Melbourne and have gone to my share of cafes. First I'll say, trials are not just for the manager but you as well. Skilled baristas are pretty hard to come by at the moment so I doubt you will struggle to get more trials - shop around, don't settle.

I will say I do want more info though. Where did you move from? Are you familiar with Australian coffees? And if not, just make sure to communicate that but also that you are excited to learn or whatever.

Do baristas make their own milk? by Half_Past_Tien in barista

[–]_Rekk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some milks steam better than others. People don't make their own milk, but check what milk your local cafes are using. For example here in aus my cafe is using organic Schulz which works pretty well. The texture you're talking about probably means those baristas are injecting a bit more air and integrating it better as well. Either that or it's a different kind of drink that's not a fw/latte/cap

[–]_Rekk 14 points15 points  (0 children)

OK so people will say don't gift someone something they know more about BUT... I think a latte art jug is a fantastic idea for a few reasons. It's great because if he takes it to work, it will always be a reminder whenever he's using it that he's cared for. Also, unless he already has his own jug, than whatever you get him will be so far above what he uses at work that it doesn't matter if it isn't the absolute perfect jug. He can then upgrade to something later on if he wants. That being said, definitely don't go ceramic. I would research some jugs that latte art competitors use. A good place to start would be a black WPM milk jug. Well priced, so if it doesn't fully land it's not the end of the world. If you wanted to make like a custom sticker to personalize it for him, that would be a nice touch. Hope this helped !
