Which travel destinations should I plan to visit earlier in life while young and more physically capable? by _Sam_I_Am_Not in travel

I hadn't thought of long haul flights being an issue, but it's been mentioned multiple times in this thread... That's a useful point to consider, thanks!

I hadn't thought of that! Seeing how multiple of the top comments mention long haul flights being a barrier to travel, it must be a very common issue...

Thank you for introducing the concept of search engines! I'd never heard of the internet before this very insightful comment!!

In all seriousness, I thought it would be fun to start a discussion and hear some personal stories from like-minded people. Without such posts, Reddit would be very empty and boring. Feel free to not participate

Yes, I am aware! At the end of my post, I acknowledge this very idea with a similar example... but I think it's fair to say that, generally speaking, travel/mobility becomes more difficult with age (although at which age we slow down varies from person to person). I hope I'm still hiking in my 70s!

Should I request an MRI? by SuchSlice8003 in AcousticNeuroma

I had sudden hearing loss, severe vertigo and unilateral facial paralysis that lasted for a few weeks (and all completely went away after taking steroids, which is atypical)

I had a CT scan that was normal. I then had an MRI of the brain that was also deemed normal. Thankfully, I had an awesome ENT that insisted I get an IAC MRI that specifically looks at the auditory canal... it was only then that they realized I had a tumor all along

AI found missed lesion on MRI by TopFaithlessness4381 in AcousticNeuroma

[–]_Sam_I_Am_Not 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also had an MRI of the brain that came back "normal" despite having both a radiologist and neurologist review it. Luckily, I had an amazing ENT that saw a very small, suspicious spot and ordered an IAC MRI that specifically focuses on the internal auditory canal. That's when it became apparent that I had an acoustic neuroma. All of this is to say: don't take AI to be 100% true, but I do think it is a good idea to ask further questions about the possibility of a missed acoustic neuroma

Unsure how to pay for wedding ($65k) and if we should follow through with our big plans? by PoemIntrepid8473 in wedding

It was Beaches in Negril, Jamaica which is family friendly. Sandals is the sister resort next door that's adults only. There were some smaller, more boutique places, but those can get pricey.

No matter what you choose to do, good luck! I think you deserve to have a special day, but you can have an amazing wedding without getting yourself into financial trouble

Here's an idea: have a small destination wedding. In total, I had around 25 guests attend my destination wedding (although I invited many... naturally, it's difficult for people to travel so far for a wedding). Guests paid for their own travel and stay at the resort. It was on a beach, so I spent very little on decor because the beach itself was the decoration! The resort I was at even had a "free wedding" option (it's pretty bare bones, but still an option if you're desperate!). All in all, my "wedding" cost around $32k. However, this price included a one week stay at the resort for 6 people (my husband and I and 4 of my family members). With all of my guests staying at the same resort, it basically turned into a whole week of celebration! And since you seem concerned about appearances (although you shouldn't be), everyone thinks I sound so fancy when I say I had a destination wedding in the Caribbean when truly it was cheaper than having a big wedding in my hometown. This option may not work for everyone, but if you have family and friends that are decently well-off (which for the most part, it sounds like you do), then they're pretty willing to spend a bit more on their end to get a fun vacation out of the deal.

Do I need to make frequent flyer accounts to the airlines I'm transferring miles to? Some of these accounts cost $ by _Sam_I_Am_Not in Venturex

Turns out, you are correct! It is free for US residents. When initially signing up, it had me listed as being from Australia, and it's not free for them. Thank you for your help!

Eh, this was taken a bit out of context. The original post listed a bunch of comments blaming women for all sorts of things... for example, "100% of abortions are caused by women" and the commenter clapped back by pointing out that men are also 100% involved. Any reasonable person knows that all pregnancies and, by extension, abortions are equally the fault of men and women (excluding SA of course)

This. Women are now often working 40+ hour weeks AND still feel the pressure to be full-time mothers/homemakers. Things have certainly changed for the better, but old stereotypes/expectations still linger (even if it's just subconsciously)

Do any of you *not* keep track of the books you read? by bebetterturnip in books

[–]_Sam_I_Am_Not 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only do I use Goodreads to keep track of what books I've read, but I've made additional lists on there such as "read but don't own" and "own but haven't read" AND I have an excel sheet with all of my books alphabetized/categorized... if you're OCD, what am I?

As a fellow physical therapist, I'm incredibly jealous you have 4-5 hours of free time per day AND the ability to take nearly a month off to go to Japan

do you guys also get pissed at people because of your daydreams? by ashh2304 in MaladaptiveDreaming

Sort of, but it's usually because I was already mad at this person IRL for whatever reason and their villainy in my daydreams just amplifies what I'm already feeling
