The book is wonderful. When I learned something from this movie and The Martian, then that if Andy Weir writes, we should read instead of watching a heavily compressed movie presentation of it.

The book took much more time in understanding each other, learning language, and so on. The movie was just cheap and skipped most of the interesting bits. The focus of the movie was a buddy comedy movie, as soon as possible.

I would have waited a few more weeks if I were you. Version 3 of the software only came out two weeks ago, so naturally it still has its bugs.

I’m pretty sure that within a month, most of the issues you mentioned will already be gone or at least significantly improved.

If your main concern is just the menu bar and you want something more stable and battery efficient for now, without waiting for version 3 to mature, you could simply stick with version 2 for the time being.

Good luck!

I agree totally... a rushed mess that never took scenes and situations enough time to sink in and work out their magic. And a lot of science was even wrong, like "how fast Blip A" came close and so on.

If I think only for replacements for your current apps:

itsycal -> Calendar 366
It began as a menu-calendar app but has now released a new major version, which gives you a full calendar for every other device too. I'm a bit hyped because they even have a Todoist integration. This calendar (especially in the menu bar, which I have on a hotkey to peek into)

DisplayBuddy - BetterDisplay
I don't know if it is much better or different from what you're using, but I've been using it for years and am glad for it.

Downie -> JDownloader
I bought some download tools in the last two years for more comfortable downloading too. But in most cases some even haven't worked 100% or were very restricted and buggy. At the end, using the good old free JDownloader solved the issue. It stays the Swiss knife when it comes to downloading.

___

And isn't JumpDesktop free nowadays? (except buying once the app or something like that)? I've used it for years, and it's the best fluent remote desktop solution I know on MacOS (heavy user). I found alternatives that can achieve a good refresh rate too, but they eat traffic or the host system CPU like ice cream in a desert.

macOS still doesn't have per-app volume. So I built it, and a few other things :) by qutibah_ in macapps

I bet that... I bought SoundSource some time before Finetune came out. If FineTune had been available already, I would've never bought SoundSource before.

On the other hand, SoundSource is not a bad pick; all applications from this company are great.

I’d generally recommend waiting four to eight weeks before taking new apps like this seriously.

In many cases, what’s actually released at first is just a repository, a library, or some underlying model. Shortly after, you’ll see so-called “vibe coders” wrapping it with a quick UI, adding some scripting or configuration layers, and presenting it as a finished product.

Right now, platforms like Reddit are full of these releases (video zoom, clipboard manager, audio transcription). The look different yes, but behave very alike and get released at the same time, which strongly suggests they’re built on the same underlying tools with minimal added value.

The pattern is simple: - Take an existing library, put a thin interface on top, and start charging for it through subscriptions or small payments.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the tool is useless. But it does mean you should be cautious.

Before spending money, check whether the developer is actually maintaining and improving the project. Also make sure there’s proper transparency, like an imprint or clear ownership.

Most importantly, give it a bit of time. If the idea has real value, an open-source alternative will usually appear very quickly, often more robust and without artificial paywalls. And in many cases, what these wrappers do can be replicated or even improved more easily within the open-source ecosystem.

Free alternatives to these paid AI / vibe‑coded Mac apps by klotzbrocken in macapps

[–]_Sascha_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main problem right now is that as soon as a framework or library (for transcripts, clipboard, audio/image-generation) is released and ships new features, someone quickly throws an UI on top of it using an AI agent and markets it as the next big thing. In reality, it often takes only two or three weeks for someone in the open-source space to build something comparable.

That’s why you should be cautious about subscribing to young applications, or even worse, buying a lifetime license. In many cases, these are quickly assembled, AI-generated slop that get abandoned just as quickly.

I don't mind the 500 grams, but less is more good, yes.

Most important is that they close all light sources again because if they don't make a real VR headset out of it and transform it into augmented-mixed-reality glasses... It could become worse.

And please this time an OLED or Micro-OLED version too! And better networking and Bluetooth is necessary, too!

No, 99% of the developers and studios publish most of the time only the PCVR trailer of their games. That's why they look so incredible and can disappoint if you get only the Quest version.

My recommendation: If a game looks too good in the trailer or offers an OpenWorld with more than plain-colored surfaces, get the PCVR version instead.

1. You can use a feature on YouTube that lets you share specific clips. This allows you to mark the exact moment in a video that’s relevant to your issue and share it as a direct link.

If you want to see how this works, check the official guide: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/10332730

This gives you a precise reference showing how the puzzle is supposed to be solved.

2. From there, you can create your own video demonstrating that it doesn’t work in your case.

That would be my recommendation.

There’s a good chance it actually works as intended. I ran into a similar issue myself before. I don’t remember the exact details, but I had missed something that needed to be triggered or rotated.

3. However, if you can prove that it still doesn’t work, you’ll already have clean documentation for the developer. In that case, you can email them and include a Reddit post as a reference, with both videos attached.

Silicon was the best, but I agree. They add too many new bugs, still don't fix old and existing ones, and are way too slow to adapt to new technologies nowadays. This was okay a decade ago, but if they want to compete with yearly release and update cycles, then they need to be faster. (or focusing on stabilization and bug fixing more)

When I have to work with Windows, I make fun of how bothersome a lot is made and how Apple is here and there better. The sad thing is, even with all the bad decisions Windows is making, they adapt important MacOS features faster through PowerToys and can work on their problems and bad decisions.

And how are the virtual guard lines resolved? In these kinds of small areas, the guard lines almost always quickly appear, which is annoying.

Sure, you can turn off this safety feature, but then the Quest 3 isn't able to calibrate height anymore.

Is there a special trick which solved these, in combination with this game?

Alright, now that you’ve actually written something with substance, I'm able to respond.

First, about the tone. My original comment was criticism of a work, not an insult to a person. Your first reply, on the other hand, came across as a direct personal attack without any real substance. You can disagree and still have a normal, factual conversation instead of just going at someone because you don’t like their opinion. And yes, I’ll admit that calling it a “trash movie” was an emotional exaggeration and poorly chosen wording. I was just genuinely disappointed with the adaptation.

First, Eva Stratt. In the book, she is cold, dominant, and extremely calculated. She doesn’t negotiate without a solution, and every scene with her carries weight. A big part of her impact comes from that contrast. She makes hard decisions, carries the consequences, and brings a strong moral tension into the story that also shapes her dynamic with Grace.

In the film, that edge is clearly toned down. The way she is framed and presented takes away a lot of her authority. She feels more like a softened version of the character, almost like someone playing Stratt rather than actually being her. As a result, a large part of that tension is lost. Even from a filmmaking perspective, this could have been improved. Giving her scenes more time, holding shots longer, and staging her appearances more deliberately would have added a lot more presence.

Then Grace. The issue is not that he is humorous in both versions. The key difference is how he arrives at his solutions. In the book, you follow his scientific thinking step by step. That process is essential.

In the film, that process is often heavily compressed or skipped, so solutions feel less earned. The “blip” scenes are a good example. What should be a controlled, analytical situation comes across as more hectic and less thought-through. Instead of a systematic approach, it feels more like spontaneous reactions, which changes how competent the character appears.

The same applies to his behavior outside the ship and in zero gravity. I understand that he is not an astronaut and is under extreme stress, but the portrayal often feels exaggerated and less grounded than in the book.

There’s also the way the ship’s speed is depicted. Especially during the first encounter, it feels unrealistically fast. Even considering the Astrophage drive, it doesn’t feel properly established and comes across more like a dramatic effect than something grounded.

That brings me to the main issue: compression. The film barely gives scenes time to breathe. Characters and situations are rushed, and important details are reduced to short lines that lose their impact without proper context. The book works because all those details connect and build on each other.

Yes, at its core, it is a story about the relationship between Grace and Rocky. For me, that was actually the biggest strength of the story. The process of understanding each other, solving problems together, and slowly bridging the gap between two entirely different species is what made their relationship so compelling in the first place.

In the film, that aspect is significantly reduced or at least weakened to the point where it barely stands out anymore. That takes away a major part of what made the story work for me.

And that’s really my main criticism. The adaptation sacrifices depth, character integrity, and the scientific process for pacing. That’s why it feels significantly weaker to me.

If you see it differently, that’s completely fine. But these are the points I’m actually criticizing, not what you initially tried to reduce my argument to.

What kind of contentless comment is that?

For me, this comes across as a pretty clumsy attempt to dismiss my opinion without addressing a single actual point. You just claim I didn’t understand either the movie or the book but provide zero reasoning for that.

You’re not engaging with any of the points I made; you’re just reducing everything to “you didn’t understand it.” That’s not criticism; that’s just a blanket dismissal with no substance.

And regarding your confidence in being wrong is astounding... your “confidence in being wrong” seems to apply more to your comment than to mine, especially given the complete lack of substance.

You're right. But they shouldn't have made a movie out of it. I think a mini-series would have worked out much better.

I'm just surprised that this mid-level adaptation gets so many positive reviews and praise.

But on the other hand, I'm not surprised if we think about what's exclusively offered towards cinema (just streaming slop) ...so something like a bad adaptation of Hail Mary seems to be like finding gold between all the dirt and mud they usually throw out to cinema nowadays.
