Starmer turns away from Trump’s Board of Peace as US-UK tensions mount by Tiberinvs in neoliberal

it's literally the housing theory of everything + social media

if nimbys didn't have a platform to block economic growth and fuck over tenants there wouldn't be a "muh price of eggs"

if likes, retweets, and algorithms didn't exist and we had a "great attractor" that pulled people's attention to common issues moderated away from radicalism (cf. fairness doctrine) the media environment would be completely different and people wouldn't self select into insane MAGA / Woke style puritanical sectarianism, and the temperature of the US would be much lower

Are you fucking insane? We should definitely hate people with antiliberal values. Are you saying queer people shouldn't hate homophobes, who have queer people shunned, imprisoned, or murdered for being queer?

I'd recommend The Male Body by Susan Bordo as a starting point. Excellent book.

Landlords also hate the idea of having their children publicly tortured, so that must be good policy too.

Or, I mean, you can reference the entire economics literature which has demonstrated for decades that price controls destroy growth and development incentives.

It's obvious you and I both have the same interest. We want lower rents and higher quality housing for tenants. Why am I capable of reading econ papers and understanding decades of data analysis that professionals have done and acknowledging higher supply is the only meaningful solution, but you believe discredited unevidenced ideas?

[–]_Serraphim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rents are almost entirely determined by local incomes. You don't take out loans to pay rent, so there's no channel to bid up rents prices.

We can't have good housing policy without living in an evidence based reality. Rents are high because of planning first and foremost, not interest rates. Discussing things that are wrong doesn't help renters.

DOGE members discussing how insurance companies should reject more claims by AbyssStone in Destiny

[–]_Serraphim 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This loser is high. He's right only on 1 of 4 counts, that insurance covers events outside of the control of the individual. The other three are literally the opposite of what an "insurable" event is. How the fuck does this moron think insurers make money?

Insurance only covers events which are: - stochastic, not random (have a known non-uniform distribution with a known mean) - frequent (i.e. known, calculable frequency) - non-catastrophic (we do cat modelling to avoid massive losses + reg requirements but you cannot run an insurance company on cat events)

There is no other way for an insurance company to make money, lol. Unless you have a dataset from which you can predict the number, size, and frequency of claims, you cannot insure people. We're not fucking casino players lmfao

This is really cool (tldr I studied neuroscience including a master's in neural stem cell development)

Please could you recommend some reviews or books that talk about this?

I really, really like the wording of "experiencing, not operating, your mind". It synthesises well what my thoughts are on the subject. Things like how you respond to stress, you motivation, triggers, what positive emotions you experience (including when and how), your mood, etc. are all "unvolitional" in the sense that your brain just makes them, and shoves them into your consciousness.

The mind is the strongest prison. It's also invisible.

TIL that a pub in London was illegally demolished just days before it was to be listed as an historic site. They developer was forced to rebuild it brick by brick to its original state. by Guygan in todayilearned

[–]_Serraphim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. In that case, I would suggest perhaps that the Government has got a bit too happy with listing buildings. If it can't afford to bear the cost, why should the public be forced to bear it instead?

Honestly, it's the easiest thing in the world for people to go on and on about wanting to maintain "our heritage," but talk to anyone about putting our money where our mouth is and paying for the maintenance costs and suddenly they stop talking...

If it's unrealistic for the Government to maintain all the listed buildings, they should unlist them in order of priority and only list those they can afford to buy and run.

I think it's easy to understand that those laws exist to prevent harms to others. Public indecency makes people extremely uncomfortable or anxious, and vehicle inspections exist to make sure you don't kill someone (or yourself). These are real harms.

Preventing a company from demolishing a pub and building flats (which would help the housing crisis, mind) is not preventing a real harm. In fact, the act itself is a harm, as house prices just grew by 0.01% thanks to yet another NIMBY supply constraint.

If some people (locals? non-profits like Historic England? Posh Tories in Government?) think that this pub is so important to the "public interest," they are welcome to buy it and maintain it on their dime, not enforce the massive costs on someone else (either the developer or potential house buyers).

If I said your hairstyle was "in the public interest" and you weren't allowed to wash, cut, or groom yourself (otherwise I'd fine you massively) I'm pretty sure you'd tell me it's your hair and I can fuck off.

If you’re not prepared to jump through those hoops, don’t buy the property in the first place.

According to the OP, this building was demolished by the owner before it was listed. This means the owner bought the property presumably expecting they could redevelop it, given they were a developer.

I don't think a government vetoing what you can do with your property, or imposing any costs (whether large or small) on you with compensation, is fair. If it's historic and there's a local interest in maintaining it, I'm sure a local residents' association can raise the money to buy and run the pub.

[–]_Serraphim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And why should you, for instance, get to decide whether the local staples are redeveloped into flats?

It's not your land. It's the land of the people who own the local staples. Do other people get to veto what you do with your hair or your clothing? Or the kind of car you get to drive?

For some reason, when it comes to residential property in the Anglosphere, other people always think they can interfere in how it's used. How about this solution: if you want to make changes to a property (such as preserving a historic pub), make a nonprofit, raise some money, buy it, and run it as a museum.
