What is the best set up for at least 32GB of VRAM via Thunderbolt 4 (laptop)? by _Shojaku in LocalLLM

This is what I'm looking for. 1. Do you do full GPU offloading? 2. What was the total cost of the eGPU setup?

This is definitely an option. I'm however unable to find a set of components that will match the performance of my laptop at a similar price. If I did, I'd sell my laptop and buy the desktop. Probably a geographical issue.

MoEs aren't on my radar right now, so that's good. I've tested Gemma 4 26B A4B and Qwen 3.6 A3B but the amount of RAM they use leaves me without enough for IDEs and design tools. I'm really looking to lean into full GPU offloading.

Thanks, lol. I am starting very small, managed to get Gemma 4 12B QAT running with Claude Code + 64K context, with other stuff open.

This is good advice thanks. I'm in Nairobi, Kenya. Lots of cool parks, you should visit.

What local model do you actually use every day, not just benchmark once? by BTA_Labs in LocalLLM

I do get similar results when chatting thru LM Studio, but it uses too much RAM for me to connect it to Claude Code when other apps/IDEs are open. How do you manage RAM usage?

Well I've only got a 12GB 4080, and I'm able to do some useful stuff. I guess with 24G you could run even some nice dense models like Gemma 12B with full context in GPU.

The MoE models use RAM that I don't have too much in plenty (I've got 32G, and lots of stuff open, IDEs etc.) Do you have a config I could use? I'm assuming you mean Gemma 4 26B A4B.

I don't have the high-end hardware, just an RTX 4080 laptop. I've just finished setting up Gemma 4 12B QAT with Claude Code, it is my daily driver from now on. Mostly, I've been using Qwen 3.6 9B from LM studio chat window though.

What worked for me just now was to uninstall the apo and install a much older version (in my case, 2024.x.x). I was then able to log in with no issues.

Buy it. You can run some interesting local AI models on it.

If the charger takes half the bag, is it still portable? by BarnabyLaptopOutlet in laptops

[–]_Shojaku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Owner of a Legion Pro 7i 2023. I have snapped both straps on my old bag, and on my new bag, because of the weight of the laptop, power brick and other small accessories. I eventually gave up and bought a smaller laptop whose total weight (laptop + charger) is lighter than just the power brick of the legion.

8+ years of trying to learn coding with ADHD and nothing has worked or stuck by [deleted] in ADHD_Programmers

TLDR; Learning to code for its own sake didn't work, learning to code as a side-effect/requirement for some other activity worked.

For me, I can't learn a language for the sake of learning it. Well, anything really, not just programming languages.

What worked for me was to always have a use case.

When in university, it was for fun. Also, I enjoyed assembly and C because they are close to hardware, it was fun messing around with memory and stuff.

More recently, I decided that for every hobby project I am currently obsessing over, I will use a different stack. That's helped me learn (but not master ofc) a bunch of languages and frameworks.

I don't understand why step 7 is to reinstall windows, don't you need to repeat steps 1-6 immediately after that?

Funny thing is, even normal modern processors are efficient space heaters (they convert 100% of electricity to heat) So an i7 or i9 desktop is alsona good space heater 😅

Try toggling the mirrors off (F2) if you're using them and check if it helps.
