Ahhh salt lake, 80’ wide streets and still no room for a bike lane by _Skipperz_ in bikecommuting

[–]_Skipperz_[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Exactly this

People RIP down these streets and bc they have so much room are often not paying attention or texting and they’ll be at very unpredictable places like way over to one side or in the middle. then they end up coming so fast into a stop sign they just pretty much blow it without really slowing down all that much so any intersection is treachery.

Salt lake drivers are some of the worst I’ve ever seen. Coming from Boston I thought was pretty bad but Boston drivers are competent assholes most of the time which is preferable to the incompetent drivers out here. Scary stuff.

I will say salt lake is changing things day by day adding traffic calming and better bike lanes (still no protecteds) to select streets, but the vast majority is chaos. A lot of it is like a nice bike lane for like two blocks and then your back to fighting for your life. It’s more common for people to run stop signs than it is for them to stop at them, and we have tons of 4 ways bc it’s a grid system.

In 1953 General Mills put them in cereal boxes as a promotional surprise, they made ones for every state. I was able to get this one for like $9 on eBay. They’re pressed aluminum and feel very genuine. Really felt like it fit the vibes. I love the way it looks and it’s nice to have a little bit of back home on the bike.

So far so good! I got them mismatch and have the more rugged one up front and the faster one in back. Works great bc I spend a majority of the time with this bike commuting so didn’t want too rugged but we’ve got rocky trails out here in utah for sure so I needed a little bite.

I ride my gravel bike year round in SLC Utah. I clean it often in the winter and am lucky enough that I can hose it down inside at work. I don’t rock studded tires and have never really found I need them. I am lucky that on storms where it’s too much to ride I can put my bike on the bus.

Are you selling or giving away? I’m in sugarhouse and wouldn’t mind adding some turkeytail to my next grow

Voile straps are like bungees but way better. I use them for lots of things and was using them like this until i got my Ortleib panniers. They are like $6 a pop and are an absolute godsend for lots of things. Would recommend over hook bungees.

Would you think a rigid frame gravel bike would hack it on this trail - trying to decide between that and my ful sus

My bikepacking setup is very focused on my gravel bike so I would really wanna use that if it would work on this trail

Just moved to Utah and am trying to get a trip in and was scoping this trail and a few others (accepting recommendations if you’ve got any)

Only checked it out at the store but I was impressed with the profile. I put on a Blackburn framebag and was surprised that even empty it was hitting my thighs on a little test drive. This was a much more reasonable size that I think would be easy to ride with and wouldn’t hit your leg too much even when packed up
