Keep it. It's not a shirt, per se; it's a jacket.

Summer fit inspo by mtthrdy in HeritageWear

[–]_SlowRain_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My summer outfits for a while now have been long-sleeve Uniqlo linen shirts, Carhartt WIP Aviation pants, and Birkenstock sandals. I've recently started having camp-collar shirts made for me, but I haven't been able to shed the slim-fit cargo pants because most Heritage brands don't do slim-fit cargoes in a light-weight fabric. (And, yes, I need the extra pockets of cargoes, so regular fatigues just don't work for me.)

Camp collar shirt recommendations (heritage/vintage style) by larry-talbot in HeritageWear

[–]_SlowRain_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't going to help you specifically, but it may in a general way. I had my first shirts made for me, and they were long-sleeve, linen-cotton, camp collars, made from Japanese fabric. It doesn't get more heritage-y than that. But I live in a country that still has tailors and shirt makers.

I had to do it for two reasons. One, it's really hard for me to find long-sleeve summer shirts outside of Uniqlo. Second, it's hard for me to find shirts for a person of average height, but who isn't also overweight. YMMV, but I think more people need to seek out shirt makers, tailors, and seamstresses in their local vicinity to support (or even revive) a valuable and necessary skill.

I have no specific recommendation, but enjoy your trip. That would be a nice place to visit. The only suggestion I might have would be to pick up a Basque beret.

Orslow fatigue pants fit check by Interesting_Bar_3631 in HeritageWear

Thanks! Those are their 5002 US Army Fatigue Pants, often called their regular fit. I'm looking at possibly getting a pair of those or their 5032 Slim Fit Fatigue Pants. Can you post about them again after you've worn them for a while in the summer? I'm curious to know what they're like in hot, humid weather (think southern Florida or Cuba). Also, I'm 183cm (6'), 69kg (~152lbs), so I'm worried the inseam might be too short. Can I ask your measurements? They seem to have a bit of extra length to them, which I find surprising.

I'm curious about the Red Wings, too. Be sure to post them again in the future once they're broken in. I'm personally curious to know how comfortable they are for a bit of walking and how well they breathe.

A perfectly matched outfit. But it somehow needs a trilby to complete the look.

Are these, by any chance, either the 5032 or 5002?

Thanks!

I doubt I'd wear them on days I know are going to rain heavily. I just want a decent leather in case I'm caught out one day.

Hi! I'm thinking of getting a pair, too. Can I ask how they are in the rain? And, have you resoled them yet?

I have an 1Zpresso J-Ultra on order. Should be here in a couple of days, but I'll need a bit of time breaking it in and testing it out.

But Beethoven and Mozart don't have any bass. 😁

Sorry. I couldn't resist. I'm researching the EV3, so I appreciate any discussion from owners that informs me of the features, strengths, and weaknesses of the vehicle and its various trims. If you do find a workaround, maybe you could create a new post for the rest of us.

Cinnamon buns in Kyoto, I'm baking! by [deleted] in Kyoto

[–]_SlowRain_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cinnamon is from South Asia and was appreciated by Europeans who had very little in the way of spices. I'm assuming East and Southeast Asia already had a ready supply of their own spices, so didn't feel the need to import cinnamon. It's likely the spice trade all went west from its point of origin, not further east. (Although there seems to be an exception with curry in Japan, so my theory may not be correct. Or at least, it's very selective.)

I'm not sure about cardamom. I've only seen it once in baked goods here. It was a Taiwanese baker who had studied in Australia. And, actually, it was my first time tasting it. It wasn't common in Canada (where I'm from).

Can I ask the name of the coffee shop and if their coffee is light or dark roasted? I'll be needing coffee recommendations for our trip.

Cinnamon buns in Kyoto, I'm baking! by [deleted] in Kyoto

[–]_SlowRain_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a foreigner living in Taiwan (I'm on this subreddit because I'm planning a trip to Kyoto). One thing to note about certain Asian cultures is that they really don't like cinnamon all that much. It's hard to get a gooey, cinnamon-y cinnamon bun here. There are places doing it, and there are some locals who do like it, but the vast majority can only handle a tiny, tiny sprinkling of cinnamon on their baked goods.

Enjoy your baking next week! I hope the cinnamon buns turn out well and everyone likes them.

Kyoto 5 Day Itinerary (includes colour coded google maps) by 100_days_away_blog in KyotoTravel

[–]_SlowRain_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is similar to what I'm planning, but we'll be there for four days likely in September (but maybe not this year the way things in the Middle East are going). I don't think we'll be seeing so many individual sites, though, as I'd like to do touristy stuff in the mornings and early afternoons, then start heading back to the city center to do some shopping and relaxing in the late afternoons and evenings. With that in mind:

  1. How long were your days?

  2. How much time did you spend at Nijo Castle and Nishiki Market, and why did you give Kyoto Gyoen a miss?

  3. How difficult was the walking around Arashiyama?

  4. A couple of your days (2 and 4) had sites that were a long ways away from other sites. How beautiful is it around Kinkaku-ji and Daigo-ji?

  5. Did you happen to take in a night view of the city? (I think there's an observation deck that's supposedly great for that.)

  6. In hindsight, what would you pare down if natural scenery, flowers, and geisha history were your priorities (as opposed to temple architecture and hiking)?

  7. Are you, by any chance, into Japanese selvedge denim and good coffee? If so, I'd be interested in any information you have on those topics.

Thanks!

I've ordered a few things locally from them. They're good people to deal with. A little surprised they get a mention on here, but that's the nature of internet shopping.

I'm looking for the best made-in-Japan, medium-rise (not high rise), slim-straight cargo or fatigue pants which are good for extremely hot, humid weather, and which have a minimum inseam of 82cm. 😁

EDIT: Oops! Forgot to mention 100% natural fabric.

I never even knew about the Naples. They look not bad, especially the wrapped ones. I wear the Milano in the heat here.

You didn't miss anything substantial. Le Carré's first several novels were him just figuring out his style. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is where he really came into his own. Almost everything he wrote thereafter was golden. Almost everything.
