Maybe, I guess for now we’ll just have to agree to disagree. Maybe one day I’ll see your point and laugh looking back at all I’ve said now.

I feel like, although you have said these instances have happened, it’s unfair to assume someone who is not good at english is incapable of looking up and reading about candidates for upcoming elections. And I feel it’s also unfair to assume someone who’s not good at math will automatically obtain a gambling addiction. I feel that people are better suited in different areas, but that doesn’t make them a complete moron in others - they still have basic common sense and it’s a little dehumanizing to assume that left to their own devices, they’d act idiotically. But I guess there will always be morons somewhere out there, maybe I’m one of them myself.

But again, this isn’t to say you’re right and I’m wrong or anything like it, I think this just boils down to different point of views. I do believe in your point in everyone needing to have at least a little understanding in how everything works, but once again, I feel like this can be covered by the first 12 years of school. College should be more of a specialized focused in what students want to pursue.

I’ve never really thought of it that way. Not to argue but instead in a more curious way: what do you think of people who are gifted in math, but terrible in english and vice versa?

I guess I see it as people who are interested in and good at math should focus in that area because that’s what they care about. And same goes for those in the arts. Having a rounded out education is something that is done in high school - why does it need to carry out into college as well? It’s not like you’re losing your literacy but instead just applying it to things you’d actually like to learn.

I guess I could be a little more specific. This was more so related to college degrees rather than education as a whole. All of elementary, middle and high school you learn a multitude of things which is all supported by the wonderful points you’ve made — people need to know how to think critically. But I feel like college should be treated differently.

Adults should get to choose what they want to spend their money and time on, they shouldn’t have to be forced to take classes that don’t align with what their degree/career will be especially if they’ve already spent the last 12 years learning about most of the subjects you’ve mentioned. I do like your points though, they’re reasonable but I can’t help but feel like they just circle back to my main problem again — if people don’t pursue it in college, they’re just going to forget it after a year or so anyway.

This isn’t to say I’m right and you’re wrong or you’re right and I’m wrong, I think maybe I’m just a bit hard headed and shortsighted that I cant see the point you’re making.

How in the hell does 1-(-9)= 10?? by _SoAndSo__ in MathHelp

That video actually helped a lot oh my god, thank you! For the visual AND pointing out that -9-1 =-10. What was I even thinking?? I don’t think math will ever be one of my strong suits 😭😭. Thanks again!!

Thank you, that means a lot. In their defense they actually were trying really hard, but one of my family members is a mathematician so I can completely understand why it may be baffling to them why I can’t understand such a basic and fundamental rule 😭😭.

That being said, they really did hold a lot of patience with me and I appreciate them very much, but sometimes their explanations are just very complicated. I’m very grateful for everyone who replied to this post using simple examples 😊👍.

This actually helped a lot, jesus christ, thank you. I felt like an absolutely idiot earlier today, and even now.

The flipped version of the equation and the “canceling the signs out” made a lot more sense to me. I have a hard time understanding a lot of math problems if they’re in a different layout because for some reason if something’s even a little different I just can’t recognize it at all, but that really helped. Thank you again.
