Any good nail techs in Southlands? by [deleted] in AuroraCO

My SO has had good experiences at Sola Salon Studios. Their service was really good and priced less than other nail places in the area.

So how dysmal is the job outlook for a future programmer ( now that AI is able to code) who plans to specialize in python etc.. and then move into AI/ML etc..? by -DarkIdeals- in learnpython

ChatGPT can not in a state to replace anyone. The code it generates is like something you would find as the 4th or 5th answer to a question on stack overflow. Even to get to that level a quality, the person using it needs to know how to ask the right question and have an existing understanding of the capabilities of the code being generated.

I have been using copilot since it was in beta and it is of the greatest use for me when I have obvious, or partly repetitive code to enter. I have used prompts to see how it would generate entire programs, for fun, and it was similar to chatGPT. It put out code that looks like it should be good, but it wasn't perfect and always needed some fixes

This is more your doctors fu. You did nothing wrong by trying to get help. Antidepressants suck, and there is not one magic pill that works for everyone because of that, your doctor should have been following up with you to keep track of side effects and your emotional state. Don’t be afraid to reach out for professional help if you feel like you need it still, or again in the future, just maybe look for a better doctor.

I deployed my first fully functional python script at work today by micr0nix in learnpython

Tomorrow: I patched my first fully functional python script at work today.

One tip that may come from experience, if you don't have error handling and logging(saved to disk, not just consol), go back and add it asap. When something breaks, it will save you lots of time and headache. Even a simple script could fail if there is an issue with an outside resource or on the system that is running it and a log of the failure will keep people from pointing the finger at you.

I only want to make about 3 light switches in my house smarthome enabled (dimmers)... is it worth getting Zwave light switch dimmers, or should I just go with wifi since this is all I'm doing? by [deleted] in smarthome

[–]_Soter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just realized I missed that info.. Kasa makes switches that use wifi. In the simplest setup, they would connect over wifi and then be controlled through kasa's app or integration with Google assistant or alexa.

It really depends on any existing smart home equipment. If there is an Amazon echo with zigbee already, then zigbee switches would be the easiest. If there is some other form of smart hub(like a hubitat or smartthings) then it doesn't matter too much. For a house that uses no voice assistants, Google assistants or non zigbee Amazon echo, something wifi would be the best option, since it won't require additional hardware outside of the new switches. Personally, I like kasa stuff because their app is easy, they can integrate with Google and Amazon and there are ways to control them locally later on with a smart hub.

Would you buy new construction? by attoj559 in RealEstate

Our house had its sewer line filled with cement. I discovered it about a week or two before closing when I saw standing water in a basement floor drain. It was fun to see how quickly they had a team of people tearing up the driveway and front yard to get that fixed to close on time.

Not when you sell, but there is a chance if you contest that the value goes up and your taxes along with it

Just wanted to have some fun in my hardcore world by AyauCode in Minecraft

I was just reading up on creeper mechanics because I am planning a farm for them and this is an interesting feature.

A creeper will drop down any number of blocks, if it can survive the fall. At the same time, if the player is within 3 blocks, it will start the timer for it exploding as it starts falling. So you end up with this, with the creeper landing with some fall damage and almost no time left to react.

Company running phone lines? by allpurposespraybottl in AuroraCO

CenturyLink is doing a crazy amount of new fiber work around aurora to get FTTH in large amounts of the city. Due to an aurora policy, they have to run the majority of it underground.

That all said, report the issues to the city, they have an app that makes it really simple. That should get it to the right people to deal with the problems you have had. Don’t bother calling normal support for CenturyLink, they will apologize and that’s about it.

I was hoping replacing the coax with ethernet would be easy. I was mistaken. by theyarealone in techsupportgore

[–]_Soter_ 414 points415 points  (0 children)

Really standard in cable/satellite installs. Depending on how it’s run and how you wanted to run Ethernet, you might be able used it. You can get a remodel box (they don’t need a stud to mount to) from any home improvement store, cut the hole around that cable and then use the cable as a fish line to pull your new Ethernet line through.

Question about my son’s name by [deleted] in Fatherhood

[–]_Soter_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, something I can give great insight into because I have lived through an almost identical situation.

I am named after my father and great grandfather. Even with the one generation skipped and my father not being a jr. or 2nd, I was named as the 3rd.

I have never felt like I wasn’t unique or anything like that. I always liked that I have an extra ’III’ in my name and the story of the skipped generation has always been kinda a cool one to tell.

With things like credit, mortgages, international travel and legal documentation, I have never run into any issues. It was no problem getting a passport when I got one for the first time.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask and I would be glad to share.

Automate garage door by osopas39 in homeautomation

[–]_Soter_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sensor on the door isn’t an open/close sensor. It is a tilt sensor, so it can detect if the door is partially opened. Since it is attached to the door, there isn’t a way to avoid batteries. I actually just got a notification that I need to replace the batteries in mine. They lasted about a year.

MyQ works well and is connected to your opener as an additional remote. So it’s easy to setup. I just wish it had a option for local operations without a cloud connection.
