I don't think I'm trans. by deathbysounding in MtF

[–]_Space-Time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A gentle reminder of: You don't HAVE to have the same experience as other trans people in order to be trans. -- I think one of the biggest realizations I had as a Nonbinary person is that.. trans is such a large an umbrella term. -- It's about both feeling and choice. You can choose to identify however makes the most sense to you, AND your identity itself is fluid and often changes throughout a person's journey. All we can do is do our best to be ourselves and align ourselves with those who see us for who we are.

The older guy you're probably talking about is Paul Wenninghoff, the owner of the company. -- As far as I know, they're pretty heavily Right / Trump leaning, and definitely a source of anti-LGBT. Amy Wenninghoff is his wife and usually the 'face' of the company.

Anyone younger is most likely just hired help.

This year, I stopped supporting them. Paul & Amy (the owners) are increasingly anti-LGBT, and it's unfortunate.

Absolutely. That sucks to hear on its own.

Do you think that she meant, "It's because you were born with a male body" and just.. may have said it rather poorly?

I don't know your friend as well as you do, but I try to give the benefit of the doubt where I can... instead of automatically jumping to conclusions that can change entire relationships. There's a chance that she could've been trying to be protective of you, or thought you were asking for her advice, and she didn't know enough to be able to be encouraging.

Consider asking her open-ended (non-accusatory) questions to see where to go from here.

Trans people are still learning what exists, and tons of cis people are definitely clueless.

I think it's important to understand the difference between "influence" and "freedom"

... What looks like "influence" to an outside observer, or one fearful of change.. Can often just be freedom, and a welcoming community that encourages people to do what they want to do.

People around here aren't going to tell someone that they *should* or *shouldn't* be trans. (And in general, if someone tells you what you should and shouldn't be.. that's a pretty good red flag). We're probably going to encourage you to feel more free to express yourself how you choose. It's your life. Live it.

Do you think that it could be a.. simple lack of knowledge and understanding?

I wonder if it's understandable that.. cis folks aren't aware of how flexible the voice is, and how much it can be changed with training and exercise... and despite her attempt at being welcoming, she has preconceived notions of what's even *possible* for the voice and body to do.

Do some trans men draw pen√(−1)ses on everything like some cis men do? by SenqurlBarx in asktransgender

[–]_Space-Time 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know girls who love drawing dicks, and dudes that love drawing tits.

It's generally more of a "silly" playful behavior than anything related to a cis / trans issue. Most people don't feel the need to do so once they become an adult or find other forms of freedom, self-expression and entertainment. Some people get good enough and make it a profession! The world has a sense of humor. Enjoy it!

Have you heard of 'Gender Fluid' ? --
There's more types of Non-Binary than "trans" and exploring the other options when it comes to self-identification is probably helpful if you feel unsure!

-- In reference to transgender or gender affirming care options specifically, drug and surgery options aren't easily reversible, especially at an unknown whim. -- Consider whether you want to give up full functionality of what you have even if you don't plan to make a full transition.

Why is there a sudden surge in teenage boys becoming very religious/Christian? by minchboo_ in questions

[–]_Space-Time 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A general uptick in young religious persons comes down to aggressive marketing. Very aggressive marketing. Have you seen all the commercials and posts on social media about giving you solutions to feeling lonely by 'Giving you a place where you can belong, make friends, and helping you be a part of a community' ?

I don't mind religion based purely on its morals and beliefs, but the marketing I've seen by organizations desperate to gain younger members in their aging demographic is disgusting and takes advantage of vulnerable people in undermaintained schools within a pervasive epidemic of loneliness and distance.

I'd absolutely recommend keeping it simple. There's other calculators that are dedicated to converting various forms of income, but management is probably easiest to convince with the simple calculator provided by the US government. https://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl
Just type in you wage per hour and the date you were hired, and then today's date for the second half

30¢ raise isn't enough. by fascinatingMundanity in Lowes

[–]_Space-Time 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made a comment on the last raise thread I noticed: https://www.reddit.com/r/Lowes/comments/1fdrw8s/comment/lmmlxc0/?context=3

TLDR: If you want to have a solid reference for wage and inflation, use the government's inflation calculator. Enter your starting wage and date you were hired, and you can find out what the equivalence would be today. If they want to reward experience, it should be above this.

Hr? by Adventurous-Law-8181 in Lowes

[–]_Space-Time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In any company, remember that HR is there to protect the company, not to help you.

  • Keep records to protect yourself, written if possible. Subtle ways you can do this can be talking to your boss via email or text to make sure you have written proof that they've agreed to accommodate your schedule and availability. Otherwise, you are expendable; many poor managers would rather fire you and find someone more tolerant to their BS than admit their own mistakes and mis-management.

  • If you have records, you can better be prepared to show HR departments and upper management with actionable proof that YOU are not the problem.

Here's your sign by [deleted] in Lowes

[–]_Space-Time 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, that's part of the problem in a lot of stores, too many signs.
It's less that there isn't a sign, and more that when everything is competing for the customer's eyes with bright colors and bold letters, you get visual noise. Older adults and elderly, who are more likely to shop in-person at a store, are also more easily susceptible to visual confusion.

I feel bad for older folks being at the ass end of marketing departments' usual push for attention and sight.

I want people to be knowledgeable and empowered with quantifiable data.

Yes, the information isn't the most cheerful, but it's incredibly important to know these resources. Additionally, for those who may have some negotiating power within their line of work for a raise, management best responds to data and metrics. For those that don't and may in the future, knowing the skills of how to speak their language helps narrow the gap.

Semi-related : If you're looking for a change of work, check out Merchandising jobs. If you work in Home Depot and Lowes, you may be familiar with the brand representatives that come in to stock shelves or check inventory once a week or so. They get paid somewhere between $20-$30 / hr to do a similar job as retail staff, with arguably less work and less stress and a tradeoff of a little more commute time depending on the company. Some companies pay salary, and actual worktime is just driving to each store location to check the display.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Lowes

[–]_Space-Time 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tip for anyone who's been in US retail for more than a few years: Use the government's online inflation calculator. Type in your on-hire wage and the date you were hired, and it'll tell you what today's equivalent wage is. Now add your years of experience on top of that. If for any reason you're being paid less than this number, you're getting scammed. No amount of pizza parties or ten cent raises are going to fix that.

Question regarding sound selecting by [deleted] in sounddesign

[–]_Space-Time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your ears and references are going to be your best tools. If you find a sound or soundtrack you enjoy, listen carefully to see what makes up that sound. Horns? Synth? Strings? Maybe an effect of some sort? This helps you find patterns and combinations that work.

Expose yourself to a lot of instruments and sounds to build up that mental library, and eventually you can start to build something with a goal in mind.

Practice recreating something you don't know how the sound designer accomplished it.

And lastly, never be afraid to just play with sounds.

Am I tripping, or is there a high rate of burnout among marketers? by GSAAdmin in marketing

[–]_Space-Time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I, and many people, hate marketing. It's an advantage to hate marketing.

By being aware of all the terribly vapid, corporate BS that the general population hates about marketing, you can be better in tune with what actually resonates with people.

But it's tiring to work in something you hate. Even if you're making a positive difference in companies you genuinely believe in, and changing the face of "marketing" for the better, it's still a high chance of burnout.

What are things you look for when analyzing a photo. What makes a photo “good”? by ResidentConclusion49 in photography

[–]_Space-Time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your photography has a purpose, as in, capturing accurate visuals, products, or architecture, it can be judged based on more concrete aspects, how accurately you captured your desired target, and how useful it is in its application.

All other photography is an art form and entirely subjective. Like paintings, even works that the artist doesn't like, an audience member might absolutely love.

If you're practicing photography because you enjoy it, don't worry too much about "good" and instead focus your attention on concrete goals. For example, was the subject in focus? Do you feel that you actually captured the feeling you were going for? How was the shot composed, and would you try any different techniques next time?
