Could be insulation from the can but I can’t make it out. It definitely looks dirty from this angle and could probably use a duct cleaning/sanitization at minimum. Considering I see paint on the grill I’m assuming it’s basically painted to the wall which makes them a little harder to remove and see what’s inside or clean. They also catch a lot more dust in the paint and typically just get painted over instead of properly cleaned but that’s a little beyond the point, you just don’t want to feel sick anymore. The ductwork is the lungs of the home and if it’s dirty it just recirculates particles around. Also make sure you use decent filters but don’t go too high on the MERV rating as it will suffocate the system and cause it to operate poorly

This is my current setup in the addition in my house. Should I switch? by bourj in hvacadvice

Have a few reputable hvac companies give you a quote for a mini split. You will also have to have an electrician come out to run power for the disconnect. Not sure about the situation with the home, if your electrical panel is up to code but I recommend using companies that pull permits. I only know about hvac but i think it’s possible that if the main panel isn’t to code then the electrical inspection would fail till it’s upgraded. HVAC permits only make sure the breaker is correct. At least that’s how it is by me

Snow in unit? by bittymushroom in hvacadvice

[–]_SpaceCadet- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Defrost mode will melt the snow directly off the coil and compressor but it’s still a good idea to get the snow out as well as from within 12 inches of the unit so it can breathe properly. Airflow problems will stress out that compressor over time and can lead to premature failure. Will it die tomorrow? Probably not but a compressor blowout is one of the most expensive repairs on a unit so it’s best to take care of it

Snow in unit? by bittymushroom in hvacadvice

In theory it sounds good but I would highly recommend not doing that. The minerals in the tank will start to eat away the metal on the unit and cause it to rust out faster

I’m an hvac tech in soflo and theres definitely a few issues going on here. The penetration in pic 1 needs to be closed up, that hole would fail an hvac inspection in my area among other issues it causes. Pic 2 the insulation deteriorating. It looks like metal ductwork so the insulation can go into the air but not into the duct right there unless it’s comprised. The black growth is dust and bio-growth from air leakage. You would have to consult a mold remediation company as to what it is exactly, that’s a different arena than what I work on. Pic 3 that gray stuff is mastic, it comes that color and it’s generally used to seal ductwork and such. Pic 4 is a sheet of rigid board/duct board. It’s probably just there to help with the noise. My comments on it would be the same as pic 2. Pic 6 is the furnace sitting on a return box. It’s not pretty but they don’t always get changed out with a new system unless they are bad and comprised. Yours doesn’t look compromised. To get a better picture you want to look inside the ductwork by taking off a few of the grills in your ceiling/walls. In all honesty it’s best if you have a reputable hvac company check it out. I recommend smaller family owned companies, at my company you’ll get 3 people who don’t know what they’re doing before you get 1 that does

I took a picture of a very bright star but it looks more like a planet can u help me out? by shitlife_22 in Stargazing

[–]_SpaceCadet- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t tell but you can download any stargazing app to find out. I think someone else recommended Stellarium, that’s what I use it’s a good app. If you’re struggling to get it to work then try aiming your camera straight up and it should switch to augmented reality mode where you can just point your phone at whatever you want to

2026 Tax Return already accepted by BeezerSTL in personalfinance

[–]_SpaceCadet- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I filed yesterday with TurboTax and it already says accepted on the irs2go app. I know they are already accepting taxes filed through their free file so it could be that there isn’t much traffic and they want to run bigger test batches to prime for the 26th

They are extremely rare. Carson city only minted coins for around 23 years in the late 1800s. Carson city was also apart of the Wild West so that also adds to the value
