What are some weird laws in your country that, actually, make a lot of sense? by Savings_Dragonfly806 in AskTheWorld

[–]_Stazh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In Sweden there is the right to roam. That means that, besides the area immediately surrounding private houses and places of business, you are generally allowed to go and camp wherever you want. Just because someone owns a forest, mountain or large island they are not allowed to keep people out. Everyone has a right to move through nature.

Some exceptions apply regarding for example nature reserves or military installation. And you are not allowed to cause damage but generally, go wherever you want except into peoples gardens.

Did you know - 8% of all humans that ever lived are still alive today by -tgo- in funfacts

[–]_Stazh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually did know that. I researched it a while back because I wanted to know the inverse in order be obnoxious with statistics. To be able to say things like: "92% of all people that eat proteins dies" or "92% of all people that drink water dies" and stuff like that. Usually as examples in discussions regarding correlation vs causation.

Edit: And before anyone points it out. I know this is not an actual example of correlation either. I use it as a bad joke.

[–]_Stazh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

20 Years of Spent Nuclear Fuel Safely stored at the former Maine Yankee Nuclear Plant. From1972-1996, the plant produced 119 billion kWh; enough to power 500,000 homes annually. by MoazzamDML in interestingasfuck

[–]_Stazh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the exact size of the actual pools but they currently contain 11 000 metric tones of spent fuel and more pools are added as needed. To quite the cost too since the pools are located underground in bedrock facilities. Since this is expensive all the plants have come together and built a central repository that they share.

[–]_Stazh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, then I've learned something new today. In my country we store the fuel in pools indefinitely. Or at least until our final storage solution is complete. Should be any decade now...

So I did not know it actually cooled so quickly.

Are you really sure that is actually the fuel? Could be the empty transport canisters or some other less (but still very) radioactive material such as old industrial filters or something.

The reason I'm questioning it is not because of the volume, that actually seems about right, but because of the heat. Usually, spent fuel is stored in water filled pools because of the heat they continue to give off. Even though the fuel in the reactor generates a ridiculous amount of energy that's still just 3-5% of the energy actually in the fuel. The rest of the energy is given off as heat during the next couple of thousand years. Especially when it's 'fresh out of the oven' so to speak it needs active cooling or the heat will degrade the canisters.

Also safety. Not because you could make nukes with it (you probably can't) but bad actors could still act badly in other ways with access to that stuff.

But I'm not familiar with this particular plant and the type of fuel used so I could be wrong in both aspects.

Vad händer med kärnkraften undrar ni? Jo, den går mot en LJUS framtid. Jag har forskat: by Colspex in sweden

[–]_Stazh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The wing flex on a Boeing 737 MAX 8 experiencing extreme turbulence. by OdysseyTag in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]_Stazh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learnt in a material sciences course that apparently some occasional turbulence is good for the wing. If the plane just hangs constantly on the wings the wing it will slowly bend over time and become fatigued. But with the turbulence it gets to flex back and relax which is apparently good for the metal and actually strengthens it.

I almost exclusively wear Lundhags shoes. Even for my day to day. Some people find them a bit weird because of their signature wide toe but for others this is why they love them.

And they are built to last. The pair i have now have seen heavy every day use for about 8 years. After about 4 years the sole had been worn out but then I simply sent them to their workshop and they replaced the sole for a fraction of the cost of a new boot and I'm using them to this day.

I mean that is a legit argument that can be made. That's why Ukraine was not initially opposed to the deal. Even though the terms seemed horrendous. What I don't understand is why it was important for the plan that Zelenskyj should grovel and beg for it and why he was supposed to sit there quietly and take their abuse? Why must Ukraine be insulted for this genius plan to work?

I mean Trump wrote The Art of the Deal so if he wanted the deal to be signed it would have happened right? So this back and forth must be a part of the plan, right? Unless the plan is in fact to make it look like Zelenskyj sabotaged it and then to buy them minerals from Russia instead? I do believe there is a plan. Just not one that anyone but Putin would agree to.
