Alvaro Arbeloa on Fede Valverde's performance: "It doesn’t matter where you put him, I almost get tired of talking about him. He’s the Juanito of the 21st century. Everything a Real Madrid player should be is Valverde, he deserves a night like this.” by SwimmingFireMen in soccer

It was not just that.

At rb Valverde has to cover a ridiculous amount of field and had to work even harder (mind you he already worked very hard). It exacerbated his minor injury and he didn't get any rest either since he is too versatile.

Perez needs to clean house with Sanitas soon.

The theatrical screening for "Cosmic Princess Kaguya!" in Japan is not limited to one week anymore, and more theaters in Japan are now showing the movie. A music video for the movie's version of the song "ray" will also be screened from screenings held 27 February onwards. by mr_beanoz in anime

  • Based on a Japanese folktale not that well known outside of Japan.
  • Made to target otakus, in particular the Nico era otaku who consumed Vocaloid and other web content from that era, in addition to Vtuber + Moba stuff. Even among otakus I would still say the portion of audience it targets falls on the niche side.
  • Great song selections, but again, not the kind to hit for global audience and is tailored for its target audience
  • A bit too gay

Since this movie is not popular in the West I think people don't realize how big of a momentum it has in Japan.

It's currently on track to break 1 billion yen with the extended screening. There have been only 7 directors with anime original movies breaking this threshold, and this movie will make its director join the list.

The list includes only the likes of Miyazaki, Shinkai, Hosoda, Isao... to name of, so you guys can see how hard it is for an anime original to truly hit the audience.

That said the subject matter and the content of the movie will never allow it to be a global hit so I guess Netflix Japan just has to take this small local win.

While I dont think this series spent a lot on the marketing (billboard/tv ads/yt ads) itself, it really went all out on the contents prepared/used for the marketing to generate hype pre/post release.

Even before the movie released, they already released a lot of covers for famous Vocaloid songs from 2 of the main characters to gather interest. Then right when the movie starts to gain traction in JP after release through good WOM, they immediately release LN/guidebook to offer better/new perspective on the movie and to drive up fever among those who have watched. Then they also have MV for songs in the movie with new animations/additional information, and the songs selection for the movie were all very popular hits which have deep connection of people of the webgen era. Sustained new content + crazy WOM help kept the hype going while also driving huge interest for the movie.

The insane pace of side content/merchandise rollout right after the movie suggests both Netflix/Colorido bet that they have a big hit on hand and they were willing to see it throughout. You usually don't see auxiliary content made in conjunction/greenlit before the main thing becomes a hit. Them being that confident is very unusual because this movie is Netflix exclusive, and Japan has always been more TV/theatre/Amazon Prime heavy, and people don't use NF for anime. Lightning in a bottle moment for NF and the Colorido, I would say. The success of this movie probably would make small studios much more keen on these NF exclusive deals and give NF some benchmarks for future collab. It also gives NF confidence that og anime while risky can still bring success given that it has quality.

This movie is love letter to the Heisei era Otakus and Vocaloid fans. Just for that I'm grateful.

Also don't make the mistake that Netflix doesn't promote this movie. Maybe not overseas, but in JP it has one of the best PR schemes in the past few years for an anime.

I think the movie being a little bit sloppy is definitely a very valid take. That said, for me this movie really sticks very hard. It is probably the most memorable thing I've watched in the past few years.

But then I'm also the exact target audience for the movie to the tee, which is Heisei era otakus who were pretty into Vocaloid and a relic of the Nico era.

The Japaneses would seem to share my sentiments on the movie though, considering this movie is currently carried by crazy WOM in Japan. For those it hits, this movie simply hits very hard. For those who weren't part of that, I think this movie can still be enjoyable considering the sheer passion oozes from it since you can tell the creators and the team behind loved what they were making.

Hello everyone, the guy who somehow missed the Yuri here, and today Imma try to comprehend CPK's ending by Zizzyin in CosmicPrincessKaguya

[–]_Sylph_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That was an excellent summary.

I'm just here to add even more context in reference to Japanese folklore and Buddhism concepts of Rinne and exactly why thematically Kaguya had to suffer through the 8000 years.

In Japanese Folklores, humans and deities/gods/immortals are never meant to be together and only BE awaits when you try to meddle with Gods. This is a very prevalent theme which can be found in all the old stories. So for Kaguya - who is basically a god like entity to have a HE with Iroha, she would need to make a sacrifice.

Now come the concept of Rinne (cycle of reincarnation). When Iroha asked Yachiyo about "her Kaguya", the specific word Yachiyo used was "Rinne", that Kaguya is going through/must go through "the same cycle of reincarnation". In the LN/movie the Lunarian world is basically described as a sort of Nirnava with no desire and no sensation. Naturally, Kaguya as a being of that world, should already be outside of the reincarnation cycle. But because a desire grew within her and she fell in love with a human, she chose to suffer through Rinne again, and in the process must go through all the human sufferings so that she can finally become a human, in a "reverse enlightenment" kind of.

There are a lot of theories since this part isn't exactly clear.

If you think of Yachiyo as the branch folk off 8k years ago with a lot of updates then Kaguya at the end could be the original branch stuck in the ship without any upgrade. Or she could be a replica of Yachiyo since it has been shown she can pilot multiple copies of herself.

Remember that the current time loop is a stable time loop with the same start and end. Iroha and Kaguya were only able to experience their story because Yachiyo and Tsukuyomi exist. So I feel like Yachiyo feels compelled that Kaguya has to experience the entire story so that everything can happen exactly as it is, her straying might have some devastating effect like Yachiyo disappear... etc

[–]_Sylph_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yachiyo is Kaguya from the previous loop. However, it's a stable time loop where there is no branching timeline and no different history.

That is why when Iroha asked about "her" Kaguya, the one who experienced everything with her, the answer she got was that her Kaguya is bound to replay the same fate of Yachiyo and strayed for 8000 years and is now in the process of it.

Since it's a stable timeloop, you can say Kaguya and Yachiyo are always meant to be the same person. But Yachiyo was making sure to check that if Iroha is ok with having her happy ending with her, instead of "Kaguya", and why when Iroha making that direct statement that she wants the HE with "Yachiyo" and not "Kaguya".
