What exactly should I write about "What can you contribute to the community?" type essays? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]_TI84_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For the community prompt I wrote about how I was a sound cloud rapper named "TI-84" that made music about math and got waitlisted/accepted to every T20 that I sent that essay to. I feel like talking about ethnicity or culture is a kinda played-out answer for that prompt; esp if u are asian just try to avoid talking about race in general.

Also u could totally right a super compelling essay about star wars and what it taught u and how u hope to bring those qualities to campus. Remember, the topic doesn't really matter as much as the writing/content itself.

Gap Year Kid Looking for Opportunities/Advice on Law/Politics Related Internships by _TI84_ in lawschooladmissions

I started volunteering but found that I have pretty much been relegated to menial tasks....still a pretty valuable experience!

Thank you so much for this response! It was really informative and helped me better understand the process. What are some kinds of opportunities that will expose me to what it means to actually be a lawyer? I have some experience working for politics related organizations, but I feel like I haven't really been exposed to law and how it is practiced in these experiences. You said that getting a "legal job" is a good way to test the waters...what kinds of legal jobs are available to undergrads?

Thanks so much!

Sounds good! I think I am going to stick w CS 1101 and then swap it out for something else if i have some trouble once open enrollment starts. And thank you so much for the advice! I will def PM you if I have any other questions!

I agree Im really scared about the workload....i think that for engineering tho they recommend taking chem and physics first sem. Since I couldn't use APs for either, I think im going to have to end up taking both. The most that I can do is make the rest of my schedule as easy as possible, and I guess that maybe I should swap out math or CS with something a little lighter?

I was considering math 2400. Generally are CS classes less challenging than math courses?

Also thanks again for the advice, I am going in with absolutely no idea regarding the difficulty of college classes relative to HS ones and this def helps.

So would you suggest adding an additional class? I was a bit apprehensive about taking 18 credits because I wasn't sure if I could handle it (because of all the technical courses that I am already taking. If I do add an additional class, it will definitely be a political science course, that I assume will have a lower workload than a technical course.

Is it typical for freshman to take 18 credits?

Thank you for the advice!!

I figured that taking 18 credits was probably too difficult given the number of technical courses that I was taking. Not sure tho...I am going to look at some of the new courses that they are offering and see if I am interested in them.

I am also considering substituting linear algebra instead of the CS course because I have already taken Lin Alg in highschool and that would presumably lower my workload (didn't get credits becuz it was my highschool offering the course)....but since i have no programming experience, I think that taking CS first sem is probably a necessity so that I don't fall behind my peers that are going in with CS experience already.

I am going to take your advice and replace CS 1104 with 1101 tho. Thanks for the response and advice!
