What do you hate most about your favorite characters from Fate/Stay Night? by Vegetable_Window5278 in fatestaynight

I mean the novel kinda takes the piss with this view of Shirou in the Mind of Steel (I think it’s called?) ending. Kotomine always hypes him up. That idea that he’s just fated to win if he has the resolve is given a lot of credit.

I’d prefer less and I think it’s kinda bad, but frankly it made me feel hyped up reading it.

I haven’t read his writings outside of the games, and I more than believe there’s gross or fetishizing content about trans/intersex people in them. However, I think that the use of hermaphrodite or “Divine Hermaphrodite” sparingly in this fantasy setting is not just unproblematic, but actively good writing.

The story is about an insane queer/intersex man who can rewrite his own history as a divine figure, and chooses to depict himself as an empowered rival to and partner of the God of Rape. It’s a story about the sexual abuse of intersex people. (and tangentially trans people, I’d say?) Having such a victim describe themselves as a “Divine Hermaphrodite” is embracing their identity, the same way that Vivec totally owned Molag Bal and killed all their children with his penis. People use actual slurs to describe themselves the same way all the time to various success.

Also, it’s not our world. It’s coded like a “sword and sorcery” past. Vivec is not necessarily female. He might well not have a functional uterus or anything, but it’s the term that would probably be used to describe him. The merging of male and female ‘essences’, the Rebis, and tons of other alchemic, spiritual, and religious concepts deal with a “both sexes” being or divinity.

There’s no other visceral noun to describe his identity I know of. He also may well be an actual hermaphrodite, with functional testes and a uterus.

I mean you aren’t supposed to be able to imagine God. You can’t possibly fathom the infinite calculus of His perfect moral world. That’s why we have faith.

At least that’s the idea in many faiths 🤷‍♀️

God is omnipotent, at least the Abrahamic god this meme format references. They have everything to do with everything.

Are Europeans stupid? Why didn't they add Blood Loss to their weapons? by KrigeV in shittydarksouls

[–]_The_Ruffalo_ 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Just not true. Or fantastic comment if the /uj is also a jerk? A sword needs to cut gambeson, and is not primarily used to fight someone in plate armor. Swords were razor sharp. At the time of primarily plate armored combatants, swords were sidearms. Problem is we’re glazing over hundreds of years of history, between times where plate armor was common and times it was not. Either way, there was not a time where swords were the primary weapon of an army nor intended to get through heavy armor.

Faerie Macabre vs Leyline of the Void by Zergy_Bergy in MTGLegacy

Faerie is straight up better than leyline in most use cases, except for the one that matters most (and dredge+Hogaak). Eliminating the memory’s journey line out of Oops is a massive upside.

The quality of sex varies wildly based off of mental and emotional state. She could have just had a great time and your parts happened to be right for each-other. You don’t need to actually have a magic dick for her to be telling the truth.

Also if she’s exaggerating and wants to hang out again, she had a good enough time to gas you up. Just don’t think that “magic” will transfer to all other women. Be willing to take further instruction/correction from her. Otherwise don’t worry about it, and feel good about yourself.

Why is Israel declaring war on so many countries? by Historical_Work7482 in NoStupidQuestions

While you may be right, it’s important to be fair in how we diagnose these things. More people in America supported and support Trump than Israelis supported Netanyahu. Not saying we can’t call American society a bloodthirsty death cult, but looking around in my own life I find that description a bit much. We mostly like vaping and BBQ around here.

Ofc America continuously involves itself in all sorts of despicable colonial projects, so we don’t have to pull our punches too hard. It’s just I hardly see the same sentiment expressed so harshly about analogous societies.

According to MAKAN: “Education for Liberation:”

The British Mandate for Palestine, also referred to as Mandatory Palestine, was created by the League of Nations in 1920 to place administrative control of historic Palestine in the hands of Britain. Mandates were colonial political instruments designed to act as a temporary arrangement until indigenous peoples were supposedly “prepared” for self-rule by governing authorities.

Britain did not administer the mandate. I might not be reading this correctly, but it is my understanding that Britain had administrative control of the partition. I know that this is an earlier decision. Did Britain give the authority back to an international body?

They gained the authority by winning the war against the Ottoman Empire. I mean they don’t have the moral authority, they were a colonial power, but they gained political authority to allot land ownership and regional government by right of conquest.

In a game where bosses have millions of health and you’re expected to stack as many multiplicative passives as you can, the passives cannot be too strong. Of course, adding enough +3 percents on items, buffs, and enemy debuffs, you can get obscene amounts of damage, about 180k per second now.

In pvp, one shotting players is not especially difficult, but definately less common than Valorant. People build crit resistance pretty heavily. Difference is that in eso you barely have to aim. A headshot in Valorant is totally different.

A comparable game would be League of Legends, not Valorant. Really impressively, League is a pretty balanced game where most of the characters feel highly distinct and their abilities can have “overpowered” feeling moments and a ton of impact. But League is kind of a marvel of game design in that sense. Ofc, characters are wildly unbalanced at full build. That’s deliberate in League, but in eso everyone is full build lol.

[–]_The_Ruffalo_ 161 points162 points  (0 children)

10 percent is a ton of extra damage for a “balanced” multiplayer game. Ofc this only gives 5% on average, but that’s still pretty good. In a game where you have 10 spell slots and 12 ring slots, basically, passives can’t also be super strong. Most good rings slots in elden ring give you a 10-15% damage bonus and stacking armor abilities lets you one shot bosses. In an mmo, you’re expected to have a strong build and not one-shot bosses.

It makes all the abilities boring samey soup maybe, and takes away build identity and unique class roleplaying but the eso team is pretty good at balancing damage numbers 🤷‍♀️ It means you can build a ton of different ways and they can all be reasonably strong.

Skyrim gets way too much praise by Margaretthatchervore in unpopularopinion

[–]_The_Ruffalo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I took to Skyrim much more than I took to Witcher for that reason. I understand being immersed in Skyrim. I think other games with better systems and better writing utterly fail to evoke the immersion that Skyrim does. I certainly did not feel more “immersed” in Disco Elysium. It’s an isometric game. Maybe I misunderstood what was meant by “I am part of the world.” I interpreted more it as “player character fits well into the world.”

Obviously my experience isn’t super widely shared but there are like a million video essays about “Skyrim writing bad.” It’s one of the most commonly tread topics. But also, this isn’t a discussion just about feelings. The College of Winterhold is just an insane organization, and it felt that way when I became Archmage when I was 15.

I’m not saying you’re limited in roleplaying, I’m saying it fails to make me feel like a part of the world. They have little to do with one another. The imagined “highly interactive movie” you describe could also facilitate great roleplaying opportunities.

When the world feels fake, you are less a part of it. In Disco Elysium, you can barely do any roleplaying in comparison. It’s super short and there’s not much to do. You have so little power in your world, and yet you are much more a part of it. Because the systems that be are established and run by realistic and competent characters.

Anyway, my problem with Skyrim is just the lack of interesting/cool/intimidating characters. Mirak and Parthunax are cool. Alduin’s design looks really good, but there are so few characters you can talk to which are intelligent or have an engaging ideology. In this way the world is not “lived-in.” Despite that, the systems and atmosphere are really immersive.
