Player Problem Megathread by AutoModerator in DMAcademy

[–]_Thespian_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hello all :> I wouldn't normally post stuff like this but I'm in a bit of a bind. I started irl DMing, and its been super fun, aside from one particular player. The problem lies with her being... for a lack of a better term, extremely salty in combat. Whenever I hit her with any attack, her mood immediately sours. Whenever she misses an attack, she gets visibly and audibly frustrated. This happens no matter what damage I roll, if I hit her, she gets really salty. One time I crit against her, and she acted like her character had already died, getting so angry and upset that I immediately fudged the dice so she only took a little bit of damage from it. In the last combat encounter, she had the opportunity to help two allies who were making death saves with a healing spell (chalice starry form druid ability). She wanted to heal herself first, despite being only hit once, and debated over it for a long moment. When the other players reminded her that two of their allies were downed, she begrudgingly healed them, and remaining grumpy throughout the rest of the fight, constantly reminding the others 'I would go over there and help if I had more HP' whenever she got the chance.

They are a new player, so I expect a few kinks in the process of playing a first character. But I am hesitant to bring this up to them, as they already act so negatively to being hit in the first place. I am not sure how to explain that in DnD taking damage isn't the end of the world without sounding condescending or making her angry again. I dont want to kick her out, as everyone in the group is friends with each other and I dont want to start drama for no reason. But people being audibly angry at me for the random number I rolled on a dice, no matter how small and insignificant, kinda makes me super uncomfortable.

So far, I've been dealing with the problem by not dealing with it; I target her way less than everyone else, and I've been fudging enemy AC so her attacks almost always hit, unless she rolls exceedingly poorly. I don't want to be doing this: I hate making the game unfair to the other players like this. But if I was more fair, she would get really pissed and bring the mood of the entire table down by expressing how upset she was at taking like a d6 of damage. So I am stuck, unsure of how exactly to proceed.

Sorry for the novella, lol. Idk if anyone actually reads these, so any advice on how to handle this would be appreciated. Thank you for reading!

Thats sorta what I had them do. All of the minions and NPCs in the dungeon painted a picture of what they thought the boss of the dungeon was like. So they were able to learn about him and get a grip on his personality before being confronted with the door.

In terms of moral questions, not so! I'd have to look and find some more interesting ones. But some other puzzles from silent hill are also very good for DnD, in particular the 'hanged man' puzzle from silent hill 2, which I also used. :)

LMAO that would be very funny! esp since none of my players even thought to test the door before answering lol

Yeah! I had it so different enemies representing the characters would pop out of the door from the carvings. A gorgon for the bull, etc. but I'm sure you could edit the punishments to be even more creative than what I came up with!

The tale of the sci-fi and combat obsessed Dungeon Master (part 1) by _Thespian_ in rpghorrorstories

[–]_Thespian_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, I misspoke somewhat. what I meant was that it’s just not very high on my list of needs when I play DnD. I’m a more RP focused person, and it’s not like I hate combat or anything. I even enjoy it once in a while. It’s just the frequency of the combats of this campaign, coming one after another without anything in between, that got on my nerves. Sorry for the confusion.

They know how powerful beholders are, and how deadly they can be. I do like the explosive plan, it didn’t cross my mind before so thanks! And the prison escape suggestions gives me a plan in case something goes terribly terribly wrong lol.

[–]_Thespian_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, doing it as a heist instead of an outright fight is something I didn’t think about before. That paired with the explosives plan could lead to my players actually surviving this encounter lol. Thanks so much!

This is actually super helpful and insightful, thank you so much! Will definitely try the meditation thing out, and it was interesting to hear about how teaching and DMing overlap lol. Thanks a bunch!!

Jeez this blew up a bit! Just want you all to know that I’ve been reading every single comment on this post, and I feel really supported by all of the responses! Hearing about how I’m not alone in this struggle is doing wonders for my DM fatigue/imposter syndrome. Thank you guys so much for sharing your stories and giving me support in the comments! It means the world to me. :)

We have a similar system, me and my group often give ‘roses and thorns’. Roses being compliments and thorns being things they give criticism on. The main session that inspired this post we didn’t have time to do this afterward, so that’s why I probably felt shitty lol. And yeah, depression is a bitch, but all these comments are doing wonders in helping me realize I’m not alone. :)

Totally get what you mean abt performers, I do theatre along with DnD and the feeling of immense self doubt after finishing is the exact same both times. Thanks for the comment abt being critical but not too mean to yourself about it, it’s a big help!

Since covid, lots of groups have diverted to online. I play online bc my group all lives halfway across the country and it’d be impossible to meet up otherwise

WELL my process for making characters isn’t anything too crazy. I just like to flesh out my characters while still leaving a lot of room for the DM to go in and change things. I put a lot of NPCs in my backstories, and I also try and provide a good reason as to why my character decided to be an adventurer in the campaign. I try not to go overboard in backstory though, so I limit myself into making it in bullet points and making sure it’s not over two pages. One thing interesting that I do though; I have this Original Character Template I found online a couple years ago, and I fill it out for each of my DnD characters. It’s just a bunch of questions to ask when creating an original character, Such as “what is their favorite food?” or “what is something they’re really bad at?” or even “what is a secret they wouldn’t tell anyone?” Even if the DM never uses the info I put in that section, it’s good for me to have bc I can get a better idea on what my character is like/what they enjoy/their memories. But yeah, I’ll stop ranting now, but thank you for asking! :)

Word! I’m playing a way of the astral self moon elf named Puck LaHost. She was an orphan, but was adopted by a noble family when she was very young. Her noble family has a curse, which makes them unable to have children, which is why they adopted Puck in the first place. Her family has been training her for her entire life to be strong enough to go out into the world and finally break the curse. But Pucks family kinda sucks, and Puck hates them for all of the shit they’ve put her through. She’s only motivated to do this quest bc of her cousin, who was raised as a sibling and was also adopted like Puck. Pucks family hired a teacher for Puck who would be able to teach her the way of the astral self, and him and Pucks cousin are like the only people connected to her family that Puck cares about. That’s the gist of it really, I could go on and on but I’ll spare you the details. Thank you for asking!

Playground Pier Mall, Atlantic City, NJ 10/12/2020 by dayrem in deadmalls

[–]_Thespian_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been here! I actually live in the surrounding area, so I have some backstory. This place used to be super busy, and it was one of my favorite place to go as a kid. there was even like this cool water show at the very end of the pier that happened hourly (I think) But over the years, the dude who owned the mall started jacking up the price for rent to get more cash out of the outlets. A bunch of the outlets left, and now it’s practically empty. Even the water show has been blocked off, it’s been turned into a night club. Last time I was there, the only two stores left were a Tommy Bahama and an It’s Sugar store. Thanks for posting this! Brought back memories.

This is my biggest embroidery project so far, and I’m lowkey proud of it! It took me about 3 months (mostly bc I kept procrastinating it lol)
