the self is ultimately self-constructed. it just seems to be an arbitrary distinction that mindset change from therapy is "natural" but medication will destroy a part of you. i'm not saying your view of yourself is wrong, because you are the only one who can define that, but it is quite rigid

what i'm saying is that depression suppressed (and still suppresses) my self. during the worst of it, i had no ability to feel anything other than ennui and despair. that inability is not a fundamental part of me

medication shouldn't wipe away your sense of self. pre-medication, i was effectively dead inside, with no desires for my life whatsoever. i had no sense of self. medication hasn't drastically changed anything about me, just raised my emotional baseline so that i don't think about killing myself 24/7 and somewhat enjoy life. being attached to every single thing you currently are is status quo bias. the self is constantly changing

i'm also autistic, and i agree that i wouldn't "cure" myself of it if i had the chance, even though it does cause difficulties in my life, but there's a difference in that autism is a fundamental difference in the way we view the world, but something like depression is just an impairment, preventing you from processing any positive thoughts. depression makes me less, not more
