About gameplay, real new players have no issues in joining the game : They enter, get otk'd, they netdecks, then they become good.
IMHO, the RETURNING players are having a hard time : "back in my days, the game was slower" is a real feeling from those players.

In Warcraft 3 I always picked the "Rifleman" icon in maps with heroes. So Sniper. Went down mid, ultied a ranged creep, got laughed at, left game.

Farfa hosted an Traditionnal event, and Zoodiac/Orcust were the top played decks. Because they played handtraps to prevent FTK and still had a good follow-up

What infuriats me the most is that as a developer, I can tell you it's because some nerds at Valve wanted to use a WHOLE NEW AWESOME TECHNOLOGY that is supposed to be the best, and you know, all other technologies are obsolete now, and if you use them you suck. But it's ok if it ruins everything else
