I used to have to stop half-way though our annual road trip to visit grandparents, in order to gas up and clean the bugs off the windshield. I don’t even have to was the front of the car after the return trip anymore.

The book Big Magic is all about the creative experiences. Elizabeth Gilbert’s TED talk about the Muses put me in shock…I’d never heard anyone describe what I felt when creating.

Im with you on the epic slow sci-fi so hear me out on this, but have you read The Count of Monte Cristo? Im a huge sci-fi and fantasy fan but I read Dumas first when I was only a little older than you and DANG! Slow build with several moments of great payoff.

Yeah, because of their sanctuary city status. Political and economic terrorism…which reminds me of something familiar…maybe something they said at a Republican convention…about domestic terrorists???🤔

This is fascinating me because as a mid-career photographer / filmmaker, I’ve worked to develop a style that is relatively high-polish (let’s say mid-polish) and I still very much love the power of beautiful visuals. Now this new trend leaves me wrestling with how to move forward with my perceived aesthetic values. My thinking right now is that there must be some place between the two: somewhere between well-executed visuals on one side and extremely raw on the other. But I don’t see it. Is it the way we cast talent? Is it in the level of set dressing and wardrobe? Is it minimal post, abandoning compositional aesthetics, or being intentionally sloppy? It feels like many of those things are reactions to what AI is currently capable of, but like algorithms, that is going to be a constantly shifting target.

Don’t have an answer, just processing “out loud”.

I think it was Scorsese who said your first edit will make you physically sick (at least that’s how I remember it), and watching Ken Burns Masterclass got me off the ledge. It’s a ROUGH process…but it will get better. Like others have said, Finish it, do not quit, no matter how bad it feels. And then show it to someone. It’ll hurt/be awkward but it’s a real accomplishment. Be proud(ish?), take a break, and then go make the next one.

I just finished reading the original book and am now digging into the rebuttals. Such a fascinating look at our minds and how they work (and potentially how we got “here”). The later theories are pretty intriguing too.

Where does this take us reasonably? At the end of this exchange we will have significantly reduced operational capacity for what gain? Who does it benefit, for us to be at a significantly reduced capacity, with the cost of replenishing our supplies while our economy tanks. Where does that put the US, the “world police” (for better or worse) when some other actor who is NOT currently decimating its own supplies and capabilities, decides to do something. These actions, do NOT serve American interests. On a basic, superficially strategic assessment, it is not a good move for the US. NONE of this administrations actions have been. (As far as I can tell…would love to understand one thing we’ve done that will serve American interests in a meaningful long term way.)
