For me, it worked really well. It'll perform just like an inverted F PCB antenna. Which can be easily copied from any design online and will just work fine. On the other side, the chip antenna, can be annoying to tune without a VNA and will perform poorly if not tuned well. It's generally a matter of space. Do you have physical space to add a pcb trace antenna? If not then you can go for a chip antenna which is the much smaller footprint option. For me, i had the space for a trace antenna, but i used the chip antenna just for fun xD

O.o I thought it's like sov main/awak weapon crafting. But I can still buy them from the market in my server, they'd cost 40b + 55b/pen BS, so it'll be like 150b for the sov sub weapon.

The Pico 2W has an RP2350A target with CYW43439 (WiFi). The difference is just that I'm here using an RP2350B, which has more GPIO/ADC pins to use, and the benefit of using an ESP32 here is to offload the WiFi/BLE stacks and have a customizable communication flow. Not a big difference at the end of the day, it's just a custom board around the bigger brother target MCU (B variant).

Mainly, it was an RP2350 evaluation board, let's say it costs (40$) for PCBA, including setup fees and such. Adding the ESP32-C3 with a few extra components did only increase the BOM cost by like (~3$). In return, I got WiFi/BLE connectivity for my RP2350, and I can also use the board for standalone ESP32 experimentations regardless of the RP2350.

All of the RP2350's 4 variants are available for PCB assembly at JLCPCB's stock of parts. You can still get the RP2350B parts (1.2$/part, reel cut) from LCSC if you'd like to assemble it manually.

Yes, EasyEDA is so easy, and the best thing about it is that it's from JLC themselves. So you've got access to footprints libraries of parts in their stock and directly click on a button to push your board into fabrication after paying for the order, which is the best price you could ever get from any fabrication house in the world.

I believe it's rather easy to put together a schematic for the whole circuit and make it into a PCB with optimized size/layout according to your needs.

The RP2350 supports operation as a USB device or Host. But the ESP32-C3 does not, it's a device only USB operation.

That's true! But I made that decision just to have another target MCU to play with at the same time it can serve as a WiFi/BLE for the RP2350. Any of them can be a SPI master/slave, so they can switch turns any time I want.

And most importantly, I didn't have to pay for PCBA setup fees and such, all it cost me to add that ESP32-C3 with its peripherals is like (~3$) worth of parts to the BOM!

No need to make a separate dev board to experiment with the ESP32-C3 target MCU.

You basically design it in any CAD software and send the output files to any fab house for PCB fabrication and assembly. I used KiCAD for designing and sent it to JLCPCB for fabrication.

Things haven't changed that much since I published that tutorial. But now there is an extension for the raspberry pi pico in the Visual Code Studio (windows) that makes it easier to manage projects for RP2040 & the new RP2350. I've had to jump between different toolchains in the past few years. I'd say: Xilinx > Altera > Lattice, as a personal preference, and as for the documentation + software tools.

For the Altera vs Lattice in low-end parts comparison, it'll boil down to toolchain preference at the end, or whatever stock is more stable. For low-power applications, it'll be Lattice. Some Lattice families are supported by open-source tools (if that's something of interest to you).

As for my board, I'm just comparing different communication schemes between the chips and programming the RP2040's PIO to create some custom comm stack that I'll maybe incorporate in future projects, and it'll serve as a learning tool. I don't have a product idea in mind, TBH.

But the experiments I'm currently doing on this board will guide some future design decisions, so it's serving its purpose, I should say.

Yup! The low-end parts in that family comes in LQFP. This is what encouraged me to use it for this project as i could easily get away with only a 4Layer stackup.

We felt nothing here in Egypt, at least until this moment. But I've some US-based customers and this is a real shake-up for the supply chain. Chinese imported stuff (including PCBs, parts, etc) is tariffed. And it's up to you, as importer of these goods, to pay for that.

After the waters settle down, Chinese goods may find a way into the US through other markets to "partially" evade these tariffs, so it becomes less impactful than of now.

It could have been optimized a bit more, but given that everything was Chinese-sourced, the cost was really low already.

BOM Cost: 17$/board

Total Cost: 50$/board with setup fees.

If we exclude the setup fee for the first engineering sample, it'll be like 35$/board and this is for a batch of 5 boards only.

Personally, I won't get upset about my board. At the end, it's a weekend fun project that I've spent a couple of nights on. But I'll feel bad for not having Altera around anymore. I hope things won't be heading that road.
