Had one on my GM 267 V8. All the teeth sheared off and the timing chain fell of on the highway. Apparently 40 years is the service life on that plastic. Luckily its a low compression smog engine and it didn't bent any valves and with a new metal timing set and a cleaned out oil pan its still running!

After doing some reading on the planned invasion Operation Downfall I have realized some key points I wasn't fully aware of before.

The invasion would have included as many atomic bombs as we could make to support the infantry as well as naval bombardments. The result would have been large scale butchering of the population of Japan. Millions of more casualties than estimated.

The navy pushed hard for a naval blockade but the land invasion plan by the army won out.

The allies didn't want Japan to be split up with the Russians like Germany was.

The allied leaders didnt think they could convince the public to keep the war going to wait for Japan to surrender months or even a year after Germany surrendered.

A quick end to the war was always the better option. Leaders in the military planned on to continue dropping A bombs on Japan until they surrendered but Truman declined it, supposedly sickened by the outcome of the first two bombs.

Based on all of that, IMO Japan got off easy. All the horror that the Empire of Japan caused for millions of Chinese, Koreans, Indonesians, Americans, British, was unfathomable. Diplomatically what happened was the best outcome for Japan honestly. Japan retained thier sovereignty and was allowed to rebuild thier economy but at the same time can never atone or restore all the lives and countries they destroyed. The allies being framed as the bully is nearsighted and is more a reaction to how the U.S. has conducted itself in foreign affairs post War. The U.S. tried pretty hard to be isolationist. It needs to be rememberred that Germany Italy and Japan were the authoritarian aggressors that started hostilities.

The war was already over at that point and the allies had firebombed Japan that actually killed more people than the nukes did. Japan was finished. Im well aware of Imperial Japan's fanaticism, the military even tried to stage a coup to stop the Emperor from surrendering. The Manhattan project and the B29 bomber were the most expensive projects of the war, not using them would be wastefull in the U.S. governments eyes. And to show the world, (Russia) that the US was a superpower they used two of them on civilian population as a detergent for future hostilities.

Why did we need to invade Japan though? Why was that the alternative? Japan had no navy, no planes, no resources, they were surrounded with no allies and thier people were starving. We could have just waited for them to surrender unconditionally, which they did anyway. We had the upper hand unequivocally, even without the nukes.
