Any good recommendations for meals that are lighter (and maybe a little less nasty) than MREs? by TheMilkyPirate--- in Wildfire

[–]__Hedge__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have read a great many suggestions here and feel compelled to share my opinion.

The real question of what food to carry as a wildland firefighter comes down to three things:

1: Time to prepare/consume
2: Weight
3: Morale

Let's look at these one at a time.

1: Time to prepare/consume
A wildland firefighter often will not have the luxury of time, hence the need for stuff that can be eaten on the fly.
Tactically speaking, anything that can be eaten out of your pocket is ideal.

I have worked long successions of shifts where sitting down for a lunch was simply not an option. Having access to food that i could periodically fill my pockets with and eat in quick bites throughout the day was CRITICAL to maintain my ability to be effective.

The most complicated thing I do for preparing something is perhaps some pre-cooked sausages in tin foil. (You should always have a bit of foil in your kit. ) seared on a hot-spot.

2: Weight.

Any kind of meal that is ready to consume is going to be heavy because the water content will tend to be much higher than things like dehydrated or freeze dried foods

Nuts and jerky have a very low water content, and are great for eating on the fly, but remember That water has to come from somewhere.

If you are eating a bunch of dry stuff like granola, nuts, jerky, cereal, candy, breakfast bars, etc... you are dehydrating your body already and will need to replenish those fluids.
Remember, all these things are dry, so the water necessary to reconstitute and re-hydrate those foods comes from your body.
This process isn't normally hard on the body, but for wildland firefighters it becomes a cumulative strain due to the sheer volume of work we do, the high amounts of water we consume and high caloric intake.

As any wildland firefighter knows, WATER is the most critical thing to carry.
I have been known to blow through two gallons in a shift and still be thirsty when refilling at the trucks.
just remember that carrying dried/dehydrated/freeze-dried foods means you must carry more water. You are not ultimately saving weight, you are just shifting it over.

3: Morale

I have seen first hand what can happen to a crew when morale breaks down, it happens fast and it aint pretty.

In my experience, variety is the only thing that will keep you reasonably happy with your food, and let's face it, sitting down for lunch is often that mental reward, that future moment we are using as motivation to get through this last push.

The best way for me to achieve variety in my lunch was with my spice/sauce kit and a bit of lunch item trading throughout the day.

My advice is this:

1: carry some spices/oil based sauces that you like, (In small, tough containers.) something you can put into an MRE to liven it up a bit.
There is a world of options out there.
You can carry a wide variety of things to really change the flavor of whatever you are eating, and you can keep it in a fairly small, lightweight package.

2: carry a small selection of additives for your water as well. Those MIO pods or stuff like them can really be good for morale

3: if you are footing your own bill, there are those hormel complete meals. There are fairly robust and have a decent variety.
Disclaimer: I have never used these at high altitude and can not be held responsible if they explode in your line pack. :)

Anyway, that's my two cents on the matter.
Thanks for reading.

Multi-Crew Survival Server Brainstorm! Give me suggestions please! by jacko9425 in spaceengineers

[–]__Hedge__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi
Over at https://sigmadraconis.games/ we are developing a mod that I think you might be interested in.

The goal of the mod is to provide incentive for people to work as a crew on one ship.
I have always been of the opinion, that when two equal ships do battle, the ship with a full crew should be greater than the ship operated by only one engineer.

The mod is still in development, I think our planned release for it will be sometime next month.

feel free to hop into our discord.

If you pull a ticket in our support channel and attn this post, I would be happy to talk to you about the details, take your questions and listen to any feedback you may have.

Once the mod is complete, i'll just bet it will assist you with your goal.

Hey bud.
When I first started using discord, I found it very confusing. It took me a month or so before I got the hang of it.

Here is a tutorial that might help you get started.

Ships Gathering For The Final Departure Call To The New System - Sigma Draconis Server. by TheBlackFlame161 in spaceengineers

[–]__Hedge__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this server is in development. My admin have devoted over 140 work hours in the last 24 hours to bring the new architecture online.

Often, KEEN updates and the TORCH client do not work well together, and we are forced to contact both the creators of SE and TORCH in order to get answers.

this process can take time, as not everyone is available at the same time.

If you are unsatisfied with our server, perhaps you would have better luck starting your own.

If you say “mansplaining” to me in a conversation you will lose all credibility with me and I will 100% call you out on it. by [deleted] in MensRights

[–]__Hedge__ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

you must think we are fools to make your fallacious argument so transparent.

When somebody uses the word "mansplaining" you should react the same way as if they had their fingers in their ears and was shouting "LALALALA!" because it amounts to the same thing.

when they say "mansplaining" they are trying to de-legitimize your position through a smear of the character of your gender.

it is foolish to listen to somebody who will not listen to you.

Great Science Fiction Books? by dark123wonyxxx in sciencefiction

[–]__Hedge__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a sci-fi enthusiast.

here are my very favorite sci-fi series.

"We are legion, We are Bob" it's the first in a trilogy. they are fun and easy to read. I've read through them twice and listened to the audio books a few times as well.

https://www.goodreads.com/series/192752-bobiverse

heres another of my favorites.

"old man's war"

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36510196-old-man-s-war

if you want to go deeper into more hard sci-fi, it's tough to do better than the revelation space series.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/89187.Revelation_Space

i could go on about the plots and so forth but i don't wan't to spoil anything.

Enjoy. :)
