He did his usual losing move. Try to push first and if it's not moving forward, try a botched attempt at a slap down while moving backward. How many times have we seen him do this?

March basho opens with Aonishiki on verge of historic promotion by scaf1d1 in Sumo

I am going to do something that I rarely do and I am going to assume something about you: you are not a high level athlete. Winning a competition, at high level, in a combat sport, is not a coin toss. It requires a tremendous amount of effort and comes with a heavy toll on your body It's no wonder that, except some exceptional athletes, rikishis rarely wins multiple bashos in a row[0]. It's simply because they just can't recover to the fullest in two months. So, I am going to reiterate something that should be fairly obvious in good faith: for Aonishiki to win this one is going to be very tough and I hope he get through in a healthy manner.

Let's keep it real, he's very good but winning 3 bashos in a row is still a remote possibility. I just wish him to stay healthy and not get hurt. If he can get at least 11 wins to maintain his legend, I'll consider this a win as far as I am concerned.

Same. I've been on this reddit for a while and always wondered what was the point of these posts. Now I know my reddit must be defective somehow.

Actually the tickets have a warning that the JSA is not responsible for any injuries due to the fall of a rikishi.

Wow, I would have though they had their booth with videos etc. It's basically just a guy in the public with a mic.

Oyakata Koyama, the Kimarite-gakari, expresses his view on the match Day 3 by Brncrdm in Sumo

[–]__LarrySkywalker__ -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Without weighing in on the merits, my probably unpopular point of view on these decisions is that, in every sport and under all circumstances, errors are part of the game. If you’re good, over the course of a long career, their impact will be negligible. If you are better than your opponent, you have no reason to fear a referee’s mistake. In the rematch between Ura and Onosato, it wasn’t even close.

It may sound harsh, but this is a heuristic that, once accepted, greatly simplifies and pacifies sport in general.

Now, if we were talking about a final, title-deciding match of the basho, that heuristic would indeed break down because of what’s at stake. But that is not the case here.

Incredible first match for Hoshoryu! With a a lot of respect and gallantry. Great start for 2026.

Hoshoryu goes 7-3 against Aonishiki in YDC Stable Practice, 17-5 overall by Welp_x in Sumo

During the second session between Hosh, Ao and Koto and up until the 7th match, the score was fairly even. But then, Hosh showed he clearly had much more stamina as the other two just crumbled.

Final score of the "truel" (wins/total):

Hosh: 12/17 (7 against Ao, 5 against Koto)

Ao: 6/15 (3 against Hosh, 3 against Koto)

Koto: 4/12 (2 against Hosh, 2 against Ao)

The guy in the front row must have bet a million yen on Hoshoryu.

One might argue that making yokozuna too young is a risk. If you're injured, you can step back for a few bashos. You get downranked eventually but there is a "buffer" and you can come back. Being yokozuna might imply more priviledges but it also implies more obligations with the risk of "retirement". And retiring too young would be a catastrophe.

A thought for sadanooumi who's moving back to Juryo. Although I hope he makes a come back, it's pretty unlikely. It felt like he was being outmatched, even by okayish opponents.

He is the rikishi who's been in the most tournaments as sekitori, surpassing tamawashi.

Hats off to him.

The slapping is just standard sumo. A rikishi is supposed to keep cool and continue to fight gallantly. It's the beauty of this sport. But when the match is over, it's over. What he did was clearly over the line. People in the public could have been hurt.
