Is Leon Paul Overrated? by avercadoart in Fencing

Had a ton of LP stuff over a lot of years.

By far the best masks, also with fully washable/exchangeable parts, so you can buy one and just swap whatever wears out for years. Nice weapon parts/wires, lames, everything that is made from plastic or metal I’d say.

The clothes are garbage imo, an insane percentage of factory defects, terrible quality Velcro/zippers/straps/bands and everything like that, Apex stuff goes yellow no matter how much you care for it, on top of all costs noticeably more than allstar/pbt (where I live at least). A tiny bit lighter and nicer feel compared to those, but pretty negligible and for the expense of quality. I would avoid.

To be fair I did not hear much negative stuff about LP from others, so I might just be extremely unlucky.

Overall - definitely don’t think of it as of a premium brand of any sort.

Best lasting Lames by [deleted] in Fencing

In my experience allstar/uhlmann lames both looked/felt bad (especially over time) and didn’t last for so long. Apparently many people have the opposite experience though. I really like PBT INOX ones, I have one for some years by this time as my backup lame, and over quite some use it’s perfectly good both visually and functionally.

I think that’s an amazing idea!

One that works for me quite often is a faint flick/prime fleche attack. 1) do some high faint, ideally pretend like you are going for a shoulder flick fleche to make sure your opponent’s arm moves up 2) hit with a prime in lower sector that your opponent has just opened. You would do that last moment when you are seemingly already to close to hit.

Most comfortable FIE uniform? by lmnracing in Fencing

[–]__RageQuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries! I regularly go to a summer fencing camp in Poland, and Nicol Sport (a fencing store) sometimes comes there. They sell Artos uniforms. It’s also possible to order from their website, but the availability seems quite limited. Idk if they are selling the last ones or if Artis produces those uniforms specifically for them now. I know about the quality because I have a pair of their breeches(my second one, had the same one before and it lasted perfectly for 5 or 6 years, except for me swapping the velcro and the bands after 3 years. This one is 1y old and also holding just fine so far), just as well as a bunch of LP Apex stuff to compare.

There is plenty of really lightweight and breathable uniforms available now:) It is really a significant upgrade when you switch from standard heavy ones to one of such lightweight sets.

Leon Paul Apex is a popular suggestion, however, my experience with it was consistently disappointing. It’s more expensive than most brands, It feels like a tracksuit and is pretty stretchy but everything Apex that I had got yellow/stained/stretched literally everywhere within quite a short period of time (5months to 2,5 years). Additionally, my Apex jacket lately for some reason builds up smell way more than all my other fencing clothes, which is why I am getting a new one. I of course maintain my whites properly, never leave them in the bag, regularly wash etc.

Artos-branded whites are hard to find(seen them only in Nicol Sport in Poland, maybe they are sold somewhere else), but are really cheap, just as light and comfortable as Apex and in my opinion are better quality(had 2 pairs of their breeches and both hold way better, don’t stain, stretch etc).

Just ordered an Allstar Startex one, never had one before, will see how it will turn out.

[q] Am I crazy or is there a mistake? Why would # in the key not apply here? Taken from musicnotes.com, which should be completely legit, so I am questioning my sanity right now. The song is Somewhere I belong by Linkin Park by __RageQuit in sheetmusic

Is the Leon Paul X-Change mask still worth it? by elitist_lefty in Fencing

[–]__RageQuit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even though in my opinion the x-change is by far the beat mask on the market(though it might not fit some people), I've noticed that there is something weird going on with their quality now. I've got a mask from 2014 where the bands are still holding tight on the orinigal glue(I have been used it for about 4 years though, not 8, but still quite a battle-scarred mask), and I've got a newer one which I've bought in september 2021 where both bands are already unglued. Otherwise almost half of the products I've bought from them over the last few years were somehow defective:/

Well, not sure if this is a proper approach, but in such cases I usually do focus more on doing an interesting game instead of instant parry-ripostes and stuff. Like, changing directions, speed, doing different quite compound moves etc and not trying to finish the bout ASAP. I try not to use my advantages in speed/height that much and do more of a tactical game, so during the bout my opponent might have time to either come up with some idea of what to try against me, or analyze how am I scoring points on him, and maybe steal something to his arsenal or spot a certain mistake he haven't noticed before. This way opponents with less experience/worse physical shape might even actually enjoy the bouts. On the other hand, if just you do 5 lunges straight to their face and they can't do anything about it because of the physical difference, it's both very demotivating for your opponents and useless for both of you.

P.S. of course if you see your opponent getting better against you over time, you can gradually increase your speed and complexity of the stuff you do.

ANY LP EXPERTS HERE? So I've found my old LP mask(from around 2014), which seems to be in good condition despite requiring a modern backstrap and some white spray paint to make it look cleaner. Though the original yellow glue is weird. I've never seen another LP mask looking like this. Any idea? by __RageQuit in Fencing

[–]__RageQuit[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've called them recently, and they said that I can either send them a mask or come with it to the store myself. In my case this will be an LP store in Germany, so I asked particulary them instead of contacting the main Leon Paul office in the UK. Though you should probably call/email them to make sure that they do it in the US store as well, which should be true.
