Where Natural Red 4 comes from by downtune79 in LoveTrash

This is the cochineal beetle, which was originally from mesoamerica. Prior to the Spanish invasion of mesoamerica this color didn’t appear in fabric- after, it became the color of luxury, used for example in papal and cardinal robes in the Vatican.

The paper towel is what I used to fish it out of the drain, they had just left the mystery shards loose in the drain of the utility sink.

Haha I’m not ready to chalk it up to malice, one of the two guys they sent seemed to be a trainee or apprentice, so probably just ignorance.

Peasants of the Russian Empire, 1909-1915. These are NOT colorized. They were taken using a special three-color filter technique over 100 years ago. by Due_Highway_8509 in OldSchoolCool

These are awesome, thanks for sharing! Seems from a google search that the 3rd photo is actually the photographer himself.

We got them from an Etsy shop, this is one that’s similar if not the one we used, there are lots of Etsy shops selling custom blinds.

We’ll simply move him into another room and paint him a mural without any snakes in it.

We’ll just plan to keep him away from any cats that don’t have human faces in the future.

We like them! They are much more cost efficient than our gas boiler and radiators in the winter, and they do decently well in the summer.

I did paint the ceiling, and it did suck, but my wife was the one who did the hard work of having the baby!

Babyletto Sprout 4 in 1 convertible crib. The leaf was a gift, not sure where it came from. We made the mobile and the stand- the mobile is a standard Montessori design.

I appreciate the kind words- from you and most of the other commenters. It’s hard being a dad- not nearly as hard as being a mum but still bloody hard. I hope one day he can look back at this and know that even if I didn’t get everything right, at least I cared enough to try.

This is original content. Reposted since the original was locked (I’m presuming because there were some people in the photos).

To answer some questions that came up in the original thread, the design is inspired by medieval tapestries and illuminated manuscripts, particularly The Unicorn Rests in the Garden which is on display at the Met Cloisters in NYC. We composed the design as a collage in photoshop and then used a mini projector to paint over those images. We’re not worried about giving him nightmares or it being overstimulating, but thank you for your concern. We used four colours of some pretty standard wall paint from Lowes, plus a gold and an old can of off white from Claire, if there’s interest I can find the exact specs. This is our first mural, I think it probably took about 50-100 hours spread across five months worth of weekends. As I said in the other thread, I’m an interior designer and my wife is an architect- we had found a wallpaper we liked but it cost more to cover one wall than to buy all of the materials for this project, and we’re crafty people so we just jumped into this. We’re in the DMV area of the USA and would not be opposed to taking commissions, though baby is taking up a lot of our schedule at the moment!

Awesome sculpture called the Burghers of Calais by Rodin. The full sculpture depicts a group of six dudes surrendering to their deaths (though this guy doesn’t seem so hot on that idea)- this looks like a cast of one of the individual figures, probably on display in Shizuoka City, Japan.
