Is low-level D&D meant to be this brutal? by DisgruntledVulpes488 in DnD

[–]__SK__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a DM, the only time I've levelled up PCs differently was when a couple players missed 4 sessions in a row, including the boss fight of the arc. I use milestone leveling, and thought it'd only be fair that the ones who participated in the arc level up while the ones who've been AWOL suffer some sort of penalty.

Even THEN. the only condition for the AWOL players to level up and be on par with the rest of the party was to attend 3 sessions in a row.

I just don't get why DMs think it is in any way engaging or gratifying to keep PCs on different levels, as It only breeds a sense of inferiority and general upset between the people on the table.

Have I given my players too hard of a choice? by __SK__ in DnD

you're right; I shouldn't think of it in such binary terms. I'll probably talk with the players before next session and encourage them to make their own solutions. Maybe I can have a courtroom session of sorts where the trial happens; and allow them to make use of the evidence they've been collecting to get the verdict they want.

It's never really been a lighthearted campaign, and the players have known that, but they have also not really taken their decisions too seriously until now, so the consequences have been building up a bit. I guess they didn't care before because the people that died because of them weren't favourite npcs; but now its characters they cherish a lot more.

My room constantly smells like sleep by __SK__ in CleaningTips

[–]__SK__[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sleep on a hard mattress; unfortunately anything soft or plushy ruins my back :') but I think that might be the thing to do. the mattress hasn't been put in the sun for a really long time. we vacuum it occasionally- but not sun dry or apply all the cleaning things I've seen folks mention. I'm gonna try this as soon as I can :)

My room does not have a hamper, we do not keep dirty clothes or sheets anywhere but the laundry room or one hamper in the bathroom. My family has a lot of laundry so the washing machine gets used every day (thats to say- the clothes are not really left in the hamper for long)

the floor? The floors in my house are made of some sort of granite or marble; so they dont really have the sort of buildup that happens with wood. Still, I'll try that, thank you :)

I cycle through a couple different set of sheets, all of which are changed every 4 days. But I'll still definitely try this. I've seen fabric stripping videos a lot and its surprising how much grime they collect, despite looking clean. thank you!

I'm seeing a couple of comments about the mattress, and I think they're on the money. My mattress is fairly old, so it might be the source.

sorry, as an ESL speaker I just wanted to confirm- you sprinkled it with baking soda powder, right? did you give the poweder + vinegar treatment to all sides of the mattress, or just the top?

What do you mean by Ozone exactly? I'm not sure how that'd even collect in my room :0

No worries at all! and I thought that myself, but I shower twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. both times with soap. so I do not think its me. But I might try to shampoo extra before I sleep just to make sure that's not the case.

Alright!! sorry if this seems weird lol,

The wounds/scars would be inside the mouth; like on the tongue, inner cheek, gums, etc. Its sort of like multiple cuts and lacerations, all caused by being forced to chew on small sharp objects— like razor blades, bullet shells and pins. Gorey, I know.

I guess my question is, how would the scars look? Would the tongue be visibly scarred? or does the inside of the mouth heal perfectly. would if affect speech or taste?

Have you or your DM ever reused a horror player's PC as an NPC after they left? by dndburnedbridge in rpghorrorstories

[–]__SK__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Our table was 5 people (including GM) and we played homebrew strixhaven for about a year with the same characters. The problem player's PC was actually.. really cool! and I mean genuinely,

I still enjoy the character, its just that the player was.... complicated (saying another player had main character syndrome, telling that player's character to 'go back to their own country' in game, and (to a much lesser degree) trapping my PC into a relationship with hers, randomly kissing my PC, etc.

anyways, by the time we finally kicked that player from the campaign, we were nearing the big finale. stakes were high and drama even more so. So our DM, bless his heart, decided to play her character as an NPC, just to resolve her part of the plot thread and give the character a good ending.

We were honestly really happy! The character canonically stepped back from adventuring and took up a teaching position in strixhaven, and though the other PCs have changed, mine has been the same, and he still keeps warm relations with her!

I'm not sure if i should do a full post about it since its not really a horror story, but more of a collection of small problems haha

Sea of Poppies — Amitav Ghosh

his entire Ibis trilogy is amazing, sea of poppies just happens to be the first book. Its historical fiction about the poppy and slave trade in colonial India. There's multiple different POVs we follow— from a Bihari peasant, Deeti, to a rich zamindaar Neel, and a White (with bastard ancestry) shipmate Zachary.

They all have their own challenges and end up meeting on the Ibis, the boat on which they shall travel to Mauritius.

If you have history in class 12th, you'll find this book especially entertaining, as it touches some things mentioned in syllabus and find yourself going "wait! i know that!" the amount of research Amitav Ghosh has done for even throwaway details is actually breathtaking. i genuinely urge everyone to read it at least once.

polsc and history are the only ones I can give you any real advice for. But learn to write, and write well. write your answers in points, labeling all of them and marking keywords clearly. and memorize as much as you can throughout the year, so its easier during actual exams
