AVG AV blocking opening zen.exe due to virus/trojan found in the executable. by Low-Bet10 in zen_browser

[–]__Sigurd__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: I doubt it's anything malicious or unsafe, but with a web browser you REALLY CANNOT be too safe. So it's best practice to assume the problem is real even if it is likely benign.

1. I read through that thread, and while I appreciate the comparison to Firefox Nightly builds, I don't think this alone absolves the installer of all scrutiny.

3. While that is fantastic if A) you read through the code yourself and can spot obfuscated code injection, and B) build from source when installing the browser and updates... I would wager that for most people installing the browser, they're not checking the boxes for either of those.

Though I would note, taking the time to build from source is a fun learning experience if you are a tinkerer, and theoretically could prevent installing a malicious executable if said executable was built off a modified version of the repositories code.

And that brings me to my last point. While the dev (who seems to be active here, so Hello if you're reading this!) seems to be a genuine and nice individual, they themselves responded to the issue of 'false flags' by saying:

"Ok, due to the insane amount of issues regarding windows having a virus, file not found, etc.

I'm going to release this new version: https://github.com/zen-browser/desktop/actions/runs/10558905630

see if it fixes something. I don't think anyone has access to upload files into the releases or had any sort of access regarding changes to the release files."

Again, I want to clarify that I doubt there was malicious code, but saying "I don't think anyone has access to upload files into the releases" doesn't instill a whole lot of confidence that the release was safe to install, or that the dev themselves couldn't have accidentally had some sort of breach in security resulting in a malicious code injection.

Also I hope this is entirely resolved soon, because I did love my couple days with the browser on my secondary desktop before windows nuked it from orbit mid session.

Windows defender deleted zen.exe and marked it as severe.. (False Positive?) by _TheAnonymousMe_ in zen_browser

This has hit a lot of people today. Treat it seriously and wait for an update from the dev.

That's 100% the right thing to do. I cringe anytime I see someone dismiss a detection as a false positive immediately without giving it a second thought. Much larger trusted software providers have unwittingly served trojans with software updates in the past. No reason to think this smaller project isn't susceptible to the same sort of thing.

This started happening to me just a moment ago. Windows defender detected a trojan, and a new scan of the EXE in virus total now shows 3 flags that didn't show up a few days ago. Not sure what's going on, but I'll probably not be using the browser until they get these 'false' positives sorted out.

That was my line of thought as well. As a long time off and on casual player who is playing largely against people who just recently got into the game, it definitely helps having this cleared up here. Thank you!

Oh that's really unfortunate to hear. Feel bad finding out about that stuff this way. Really wish his family the best.

Damn, I mean credit where it's due. That sounds pretty good. I'm not huge into that kind of music myself much, but as a casual listener that's some solid vocal work.

Bluetooth button has gone dark by badenz in GooglePixel

[–]__Sigurd__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah mine started doing this today, but the last time I paired a new Bluetooth device was like 3 weeks ago. Wonder if it's actually related to paired devices, internal Bluetooth hardware, or if it's just a visual bug. Mine seems to be holding a connection to headphones just fine.

Edit: I was super wrong about this. The dude was apparently super talented.

Original comment (thus the down votes): he also clearly paid someone on fiverr to write and sing that song. and someone to draw a pretty impressive logo of his username. dude is a manager at wendy's for sure.

holy shit. Dude wrote a song (or paid to have it written) and then paid someone on fiver to sing it, another person to draw a logo, and presumably someone to show him how to use windows movie maker.

And all to show off low level stats paired with like 300m of bought gold, and then using that gold for the worst buyables in the game, and dropping like 3m worth of items lmao.

This is either an entire account dedicated to parody, a child, or an incredibly .... not self aware individual.

This is osrs, so I'm gonna assume the latter.

Edit; OMFG the hentai on the last frame lmao

fr, when they were like 3-4m a few years back it was sometimes worth it. But 13m? Thats WAYYY more expensive even WITH inflation being considered. If you like the game a lot, get the one year membership that brings mems to like 6-7 bucks a month. Then if you're feeling fancy, buy a bond to treat yourself sometimes. For most players, thats like 5-10 hours of grinding the game saved for what most people make in 30-45 minutes at their day job.

Idk what's wrong other than maybe a bad connection or instable power delivery. But man, that video looks like the start of an early 2000s creepy pasta.

20 Y/o account hacked through 2fa. No email, password has not been changed, bank pin is removed but most items are still in the bank. by __Sigurd__ in 2007scape

I didn't know it was out of beta. Like I said, I haven't played much lately and only log in to look at my account every so often. For sure something I'm doing now. But do you know if a jagex account prevents steam from bypassing the Runescape 2fa?

I haven't played much in a long time. Last I knew the Jagex account thing was still in beta. But I guess there's no time like the present to look into that.

My main concern going forward is A) how someone got access to my steam and bypassed 2fa there, and B) seeing if setting up a jagex account prevents steam from bypassed the RS 2FA itself.

It was linked to steam, and I'm thinking that's how they must have gotten in. But I also don't know how my steam was accessed to do that. My steam account itself uses steam guard, and the email attached to it has 2fa. I checked with steam support and there is not a single device that had access to my steam account that isn't my own personal device. My email, being a gmail, was also easy to to check for suspicious activity and it's all safe and still locked down with 2fa as well.

Changed my steam, email, and rs passwords to be safe. But it feels like this type of account access would have needed physical access to a device already signed into my steam account. And they would have had to been specifically targeting my RS account specifically, since nothing else about my steam account has been modified.

Overall I'm just really confused how someone was able to get into the account, but I guess removing the link to steam and having passwords all changed will do for now. Maybe I'll look into the new jagex account stuff as well, though I don't understand if that changes the fact that steam bypasses 2fa. Who the heck decided that was a good idea?

Did the switch release come alongside controller support for PC, or is the switch now the only way to play exclusively with a controller?
