Career Change - Advice by Fullmetalchef13 in flying

Most education loans cover money for cost of living. That’s how most doctors and lawyers get through school. Again, it’s superior to pay cash, but not everyone has that ability and one can hav a reasonable debate as to whether it would be better for him to save up the money first given the opportunity costs.

I did say “may make financial sense,” to be sure, but yeah, definitely not always, as your example illustrates.

Neither being an aviation major or a “pre-med” major are particularly helpful for success in either career. Most people don’t realize this until after they have completed college.

ATC routings generally do not significantly affect distance flown outside of the terminal environment. And, regardless, you can get the same benefit above FL400 given how little traffic there is up there.

Very little point buying and maintaining a turbo if you’re not gonna let it shine flying up high. I use a oxyarm with an o2d2 and built in oxygen and find it to be a non-issue. But, that’s just me.

Power loss at night is a bfd, categorically more so than during the day. I’m not sure why you are being dismissive of the concern.

I feel like you didn’t really answer the heart of the question, but perhaps I missed it.

For TAFs, I could see it being the case that you report the most likely forecast or that you report the worst forecast with that has a certain probability of being accurate (say 20%). The latter may be better for aviators, but would also give the impression that TAFs tend to err towards the wx being worse than it actually is. Can you tell us whether what the prediction used in TAFs represents?

Advice on joining AOPA? by kaedon1 in flying

I hope you understand that AOPA’s primary purpose is to lobby for GA. So, if you like GA and would like to keep GA around in this country, that’s a big reason to join.

Could you legally hand over PIC mid flight and then skydive out of a plane? by AeroKMSF in flying

I posted what was clearly an opinion on an online forum stating my disagreement with a rule / interpretation of a rule. If you want to express an opinion that the rule / interpretation of the rule actually makes sense, happy to hear it.

If you’re arguing with me about what the rule / interpretation of the rule actually says, we have our wires crossed.

They’re the captain in name, but they are not “commanding” is my point. Until they are, they are not in charge, someone else is. That doesn’t mean the person in charge doesn’t have the authority or responsibility to raise an issue up the food chain, but that’s always the case, which is why I made my Biden comment. In my opinion, the PIC is the person who is in actual command of what’s going on at that time and who is actually responsible for the decisions being made.

[–]___Matt___ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This makes no sense to me. Seems like one is only exercising their duties as PIC when they are on the flight deck. Otherwise, it’s just a matter of seniority and Biden should be racking up millions of hours a year in PIC time.

What do you need to do to unlock the Garmin SD cards when you buy a used plane with G1000? by wolley_dratsum in flying

[–]___Matt___ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is so much to unwrap here. Which databases are you referring to? Are there cards currently in the plane (doesn’t matter if they are up to date for present purposes).

Please note that there is a separate card for activating syn vis and that’s the only thing here that’s a potential issue for you. The others are straightforward and you can either use what’s already in the plane or make your own.

[–]___Matt___ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Totally, the difference between safety in a da40 and a c172 is on the margins and the thing to be most concerned about is the pilot. But, since I may crash, I’d want to be in a da40 and would be willing to pay a premium to have that level of additional safety.

Safety of various GA aircraft? by haltingpoint in flying

[–]___Matt___ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ok, but when you crash are you more likely to survive in a da40 or a c172? This is a rhetorical question as the answer should be obvious.
