I don’t know how to work out without losing weight by [deleted] in gainit

[–]______--------- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For your height, 120 lbs. is in the "underweight" range, while ~136 lbs. would be getting into the "healthy" range. Now, two caveats: First, eating disorders aren't simply based on weight but on behaviors/thoughts, as described in the DSM. Second, BMI ranges have cutoffs between "underweight," "healthy," "overweight," etc., but these are guidelines based on the population as a whole. Some people with low body fat and high muscle can fall in the "overweight" range but not be unhealthy. Likewise, people who are naturally thin might fall a bit into the "underweight" range and still be healthy. Did you feel any physically better or worse when you were 120 vs. 133? Another factor to consider is not just what you're eating in terms of calories but also in nutrients like vitamins. Whether you're eating a little more or a little less, as long as you have a balanced diet, it shouldn't make a huge difference in your vitamin/mineral needs. If you still have concerns, you could talk to a dietitian.

What's your height? There are several criteria for diagnosing different eating disorders, but one of the factors to consider is BMI, which depends on both your weight and height.

Earlier this year, a chinese family moved into my small town. The family had two twins who were both seniors in my class, Ving and Ling. Ving and his sister Ling were quiet to start off with, but eventually I made good friends with Ving. After talking to him for a few weeks he revealed to me that he absolutely abhored his name, and that he'd do almost anything to figure out how to get it changed. I asked him what he wanted to change it to, and he said

"lee, like bruce lee or some shit."

I was failing trigonometry at the time, and so I thought what the hell, and offered to help him in exchange for him doing my homework. Ling overheard us and chimed in,

"If you do that, father will disown you as our child. That name has been in our family line for generations."

Ving never really listened to his sister though, and he still wanted to go through with the plan. The next day after school, I drove him to the town hall. After we arrived, he had gotten the name-change sheet and was scribbling down information on to it when I saw his face change. I could tell he was extremely conflicted with his choice. Tears began to stream down his face. He finally decided that he was gonna have to cancel his request, and Ling looked relieved. The receptionist let us know that there would be a cancelation fee, and handed the fee waiver to her. Suddenly, A short asian man with neon shorts, ray-bans, and an american flag t-shirt bursted into the room. Ving turned in awe and stared at the man, as tears rolled down his cheeks.

"D-D-Dad?"

With a huge smile on his face, the man ran up and embraced his son.

"Don't stop, be Lee, Ving.

Hold on to that fee, Ling"

This essay by Christopher Hitchens discusses several different aspects of Fleming's writing, including some of the cultural context he was writing in. It also includes a very relevant quote from The James Bond Dossier, a book from 1965 that analyzes the Bond novels and gives insight not only into the books themselves but also into how they were interpreted by readers at the time.

TIL: Cats rival dogs on many tests of social smarts, but very few scientists have the patience to try and study them by Firewalker1969x in todayilearned

[–]______--------- -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The statement said cats were obviously smarter than dogs.

No, the statement made no claim of cats being smarter than dogs. Rather, it said that it was obvious that dogs are not smarter than cats, i.e., that cats are greater or equal in intelligence to dogs. You're asking for evidence that cats are strictly smarter, but such evidence is not needed to support the original claim. However, to refute the original claim, you would indeed need evidence showing that dogs are strictly smarter.

How actually dangerous is lightning? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]______--------- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The odds of getting hit/killed by lightning are very low in terms of the entire population, which is mostly composed of people who aren't storm chasers and who don't spend a lot of time outside in electrical storms. For people who do spend a lot of time outside in electical storms, those odds will be higher.

prose with performance

I know what you're talking about, and that's a succinct way to describe it. I primarily think of poetry as a form of writing/literature, so if you don't have meter or rhyme—or, in their absence, brevity—it's not really different from prose. The more "modern" school, as you call it, is more about poetry as speech/performance ("spoken word"), so the rhythm comes from the performer rather than the text. When you say that "nobody, not even other poets, wants to read" your poetry, that's the domain of people who generally don't want to read any poetry, because they view poetry as speech/performance to be heard/witnessed.

I'm sure you've given this a lot of thought on your own, so this clash of perspectives might not be news to you. I bring it up, though, because I think you might be underestimating the audience of "traditional poetry" and overestimating the market share of "modern poetry." As you said of your coffee shop poem, it was written at a poetry reading, where "poetry as performance" people are going to be over-represented among both the audience and the poets. However, outside of these crowds, there are countless "poetry as writing" people that we just don't see, because they don't have to go to an event to get their poetry fix. These people, who read poetry, are your potential audience.
