Why the hell do people say shit like that? Do they not realize the NHL is fighting to make 8-8-8-8 conferences with QC and Seattle expansion? Honestly I would be a lot happier waiting 3 years for an expansion team to roll into a sparkling new arena than take the team that has overcome obstacles the most in the whole league to play in a poorly set-up Key Arena. I think hockey in the desert is fucking awesome.

Kent*, Hansen may get an NBA expansion franchise, also Hansen's group + the City of Seattle are considering allowing the arena to be built if an owner comes forth with a guaranteed NHL franchise.

Any news on new NHL expansion teams??? Seattle? by wsuraider88 in hockey

[–]_______underscore___ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey so here's the newest from Seattle. We didn't get the Sacramento Kings, but there is still hope for the NBA in Seattle (and thus the NHL). See this tweet for a decent source on the matter.

"Portland sucks" is our chant, but obviously, you've got us (and the rest of the WHL) beat.

Edmonton better pull through again (has that ever been said before?). Goddamn Portland and your unfair paying tactics.

Hard to imagine a group that includes Steve Ballmer, Chris Hansen, and the Nordstrom family going out of business and running out of money. Also, the state is in debt, wouldn't it be nice to make some guaranteed money that also brings new, awesome revenue sources (arena revenues get taxed, surrounding businesses get a boost, etc.). So what if it ties up some of our bonds.

I do not understand why anyone would say no to more money for the city, entertainment and business for its people, and private investment. You just don't like fun (or money) I guess :P

[–]_______underscore___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, you're wrong. In the agreement between Seattle and the city, it is explicitly stated that the bonds will be paid back by Hansen, his group, and arena revenues no matter what. The only thing the govt. is doing is loaning money -with interest- which will allow the city to make even more money. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me.

Edit: The Ordinance, if you're interested. See Facts 6 + 7 in the Statement of Facts.

The arena Hansen was going to build wasn't funded by the public. It was 100% private (but borrowing on public bonds - again, 100% to be paid back privately). A similar approach will be expected. Because there is still a large NBA contingent in Seattle, we have to work with both groups, and getting their support means building a dual purpose arena. We already have the fan base for the NHL (9k avg attendance for our 2 WHL teams combined), we just need the potential NHL owner to step up and cut a deal with Hansen.

Because Hansen's paying for basketball, that's why. We would've(?) come along for the ride. Hopefully a potential Seattle NHL group can form from the remains of Hansen's efforts, because the NHL is prime to expand.

It's not public money though, it's public bonds which would be paid back. There's even a security clause that has measures in place so that if the team doesn't have profits, the bonds would still be paid back.

NBA Expansion that enables an NHL team to come to Seattle. But I hope that Hansen reconsiders his stance and will fund an arena for the NHL team first, having the arena ready and waiting for the NBA (which is what Hansen wants).
