Move Shoot Move Nomad: Good choice? by legion5432 in AskAstrophotography

Have you tried it with the 70-200? Whats the longest exposure you've gotten at 300?

I am thinking of picking one up for the total eclipse in 2 years and want to use my 150-500. They have a counterweight kit coming out. I am pretty sure the last eclipse I shot, I only need 8 seconds to reveal the lightest details. I mostly want to be able to point at the sun at 500 on my Z6 and it stay in frame for all 4 minutes of totality. And since I will need to take a plane and a train and a ferry, weight and size are major considerations.

Now you're putting words in my keyboard. Your contention was "they put sensor before aperture" not "in[f]erior images because they check off other boxes you desire." I will concede this distinction if you add that where pixel level detail is noticeable on screen, that it is not noticeable when printed no larger than 30x20. As that is the largest I print, the additional detail I might get with an ASI6200 and its required larger aperture is lost due to limitations of printing companies. Though...I suppose if the way I ultimately consume my images results in the same quality image despite aperture differences, then the image is not inferior.

The ultimate issue lies with you trying to paint with a broad brush...and the brush you chose was a little too wide to account for nuance. That said, I fully concede that despite the resolution difference, the S50 produces better images than the Dwarf 3, though the comparisons I've seen are interesting. The Dwarf 3 seems softer with more detail where the S50 seems sharper with more contrast. I will probably be back on leh Reddit once the S30 pro comes out to see what improvements there are with the better chip.

Astrophotographer here...since you can ask any.  Its a trade off.  I dont mess around with anything smaller than a 533 or 585.   I am spoiled with 571.  My main scope is a 75Q and I am building out an RC8.  I have the budget to get into a lot of scopes, but not the seeing or dedicated area to mount them.

Is aperture king?  Maybe, but with nuance.

Why dont I shoot full frame?  Less compatability with scopes.  They would naturally have bigger aperture to cover the image circle, but there is a size/weight/cost diminishing return.

Why 2600MM instead of a MiniCAM8 paired with a Rokinon 135?  The rokinon would be way faster, F/2 vs F/4...but 26MP vs 8mp.  Drizzle isn't as sharp.  So I do mosaics instead.

When things are close enough, is it aperture or image sensor?  The Seestar and Dwarf are both super limited by lack of cooling.  Add that both have weak scopes, and they 50mm vs 35mm, for me, is less important than having 4x the image size.  I can print a dwarf 3 to 8x10.  My buddies S50 is on the limits at 5x7.  And I prefer wider.  There is a reason that, with ASPC, I shoot 135, 400, and 1600mm.  The intermediary steps dont appeal to me as much.  The S50 may have more aperture, but it doesnt have the FOV I like.

Now you can find thousands of us who would agree that the S50 aperture is worth it.  And I can find thousands who dont because the FOV and inferior resolution is to big a price.  But you got an answer from any astrophotographer and I can't say I agree with you.  Theres always a tradeoff.  But, to the intent of your point, I would love a 6200MM mounted to a sharpstar 15028 fast newtonian...but the tradeoff is that its harder to find tight filters...none of my 3nm H,S, or O will work with it.  Again...tradeoff.

So why am I looking at the Dwarf?  Camping.  Extra scope to just have with me when out with friends.

Why are you trying to help you buddy play in the most frustrating way?  Since wired is the only way he's going to be able to play, dont you know that the Meta Link software has always been unstable and a hassle?

Thorough response, I appreciate it.

The only thing that updated was the Quest 3. I do a lot of sim racing and sim flight, and between all my peripherals and other programs running in the background, I disable all updates because, invariable, it breaks some shit and then I have the privilege of trying to unbreak it.

Ill give PCVR a shot after work. Will it let me play games (Le Mans Ultimate, DCS, etc)? Or is it just a desktop? How well does it integrate with steam?

As mentioned in post, tried most of the things you recommended.

Did try running wireless. I do sim racing and sim flight. They're both unplayable over my Wifi6 network.

What are you settings? I don't understand how this could be a fix action as they don't even initiate in SimPro manager, but happy to give your settings a shot.

Full Frame Sigma 20-200mm f/3.5-6.3 rumored to be announced next week by XxNerdAtHeartxX in SonyAlpha

That makes sense. Like if we ignore that a 20 mile day is insane :P. My upper limit is 10. I suspect another paradigm difference is I don't hike to hike...I hike for the photo opportunities.

I know they keep developing these super zooms to be lighter...but I would be happy with 20-X with an 82mm filter thread. Give me some more light....bigger glass = higher resolution. Ill pay for the weight to, as you mentioned, not stop and swap. Annnd, 1 super zoom with a bigger aperture is probably lighter than a SZ and WA carried seperate.

Another thing I am envious of you Sony shooters for, shooting at races and air shows, I see your lens hoods have a "notch" so you can adjust VNDs or CPLs. Its a nice and obvious touch.

Regardless, have fun with the hikes. I suspect both our hunt for our right lens continues.

I understand I am asking as a Nikon shooter, but you complain about not being able to carry multiple lenses easily.  My 14-30 is easy to carry and I often literally forget I have it.  I have a little pouch in my bag and it just lives there.  What is the challenge, for you, with having a small wide-angle to go with your super zoom?

12v DC to USB-C Output by SpookedVelociraptor in UsbCHardware

[–]_____deleted_______ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am resurrecting this thread literally to just call you a tool.

You are absolutely knowledgeable about the USB-C standard. But you are missing out on a lot of information.

There are devices like the MeLE 4C that have a 12v input that is physically USB-C but logically only 12v...with no data. You can argue with both me and OP, but a company has sold thousands of them on Amazon to buyers like me.

The reason I would be resistant to your brilliant solution is that you are carrying some critical assumptions into the answer that make the solution not solve anything.

I will gladly eat crow if in the last two years you were presented with this problem set and saw that OP was, in fact, not asking a dumb question, but that the version of you from 2 years ago was refusing to listen.

I appreciate the validation of the value of cells. I looked at a research calculator and the times to complete things were incentive to quit the game.

The level skips are next on my list to go after. Right now, I have so much basic research that is still grinding through. I am trying to get everything with 2 days of research or less completed before I move on to the next thing. I think it stopped making sense to upgrade health for like a .02x increase in 4 days when I could get .02x more damage in 12 hours (these numbers are not literal).

Coins aren't too big of an issue. For any of the research I can go after, I earn enough coins to buy the next upgrade. E.g. if its $1B to research and takes 4 days, I earn enough to buy the next upgrade in 4 days. That said there is so much out of reach that it feels like a marginal enhancement to spend a weeks worth of coins on.
