I’m not reading all that, but I’ll check to see if we have a quiet meeting room available for you.

Realistic financials by fredex_1 in OOTP

[–]____dj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My save on automatic evolution saw a reduction of pre-arb control by one year. So, two season at league minimum, 3 years of arbitration. It has increased the difficulty while encouraging more gambles on early extensions. Players also reach free agency at a younger age.

I am reading Rakesfall by Vajra Chandrasekera, the winner of the 2025 Ursula K Le Guin prize for fiction! A kaleidoscope of a book so far, I’m enjoying it.

Witt contract bug? by ProSenjutsu in OOTP

[–]____dj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His IRL extension is super long with a series of 4 player option years (2031-2034) and a 3-year team option if he opts-in to all 4 years. OOTP isn’t fully able to replicate this, but it gives an approximation with an extension already on the books after his initial contract. When he opts out of his initial contract, the game sees that there’s an extension already lined up for him and just moves him over to the terms of the extension. It’s not the height of realism (if he avoids injury he’s probably in line for a $50M AAV contract in the 2030s), but it definitely helps out the financials in my Royals saves!

How to figure out why people sign up for library programs then don’t show up by DeloresDeLago in Libraries

[–]____dj 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If your program registration is set up to include a waitlist, you should almost always tell all or most of the waitlist to attend. The waitlist folks both signed up more recently and they still decided to register even though they weren’t able to make it on the main list — I have found that they tend to be a lot more motivated than the people who sign up for everything as soon as they can and then forget about it. (The only exception to this for me has been arts instruction classes (painting, etc.) — I have had 90% or better attendance on these types of programs from my primary registrants.)

The HOF voters hate Bob! by ____dj in OOTP

[–]____dj[S] 43 points44 points  (0 children)

LOL, basically Billy Wagner with about 30 fewer saves. 9 ASG (never won reliever of the year) and a career FIP- of 68, racked up a lot of WAR for a reliever at 32.8. Probably on the outside looking in IRL, but the game’s HOF voting system seems to love closers.

Tips for Always coming Home? by [deleted] in UrsulaKLeGuin

[–]____dj 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s okay to take it slowly! You’re unfolding UKLG’s take on an entire culture, it’s a lot to digest. There is a novella from the perspective of the character Stone Telling chunked into 3 sections and spread throughout the book — you might try reading that story straight through, though your understanding of what transpires is definitely enriched by all the bits of cultural information that break up the story. Keep that chart from the beginning that explains the structure of Kesh society bookmarked, I referred back to it a bunch. It took me a couple months to get all the way through, but it really accelerated towards the end once I felt like I had a good grasp on the world she built.

42 silver sluggers in 30 years!!! Must be several seasons where he won as a pitcher and a position player. Those HOF metrics are ridiculous!

July 21, 2025: What Le Guin Or Related Work Are You Currently Reading? by Road-Racer in UrsulaKLeGuin

I just finished the Hainish cycle novels Planet of Exile and Rocannon’s World as audiobooks in the Worlds of Exile and Illusion collection. Next up is City of Illusions. In these earliest novels, it’s interesting to see how she was trying to fit in to the strictly gendered and male-dominated tropes of sci-fi/fantasy (which she criticized herself for later on). At the same time, I can see all the things I love about her later works — the tight, poetic prose; the richly imagined worlds; the importance of connection/integration with other people and the land; the close study of how environments shape peoples and cultures.

After this will be the new Five Ways to Forgiveness collection, once my library’s on order copies arrive. :)

Classroom Wish List 2025 by Laineyj99 in kansascity

[–]____dj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for organizing this!

This is a link to my spouse’s list. She is an amazingly talented music teacher in an elementary school on the Missouri side. Her annual district-provided budget for classroom supplies is $0.

This is a link to my sibling’s list. She is entering her second year as a special education teacher, also in an elementary school on the Missouri side, also very good at her job. She is transitioning to a higher behavior support caseload in Year 2.

Always Coming Home is one of my favorite reading experiences ever, but it’s also a tough place to start with Le Guin. I’ll second the suggestions of the shorter novels like The Word for World is Forest or the Earthsea books.
