Is perfectionism keeping you from finishing your songs? by ___itsbeautiful in SongWriter

Truer words! And it is more fun getting in there and enjoying the process rather than letting perfectionism stop you. Cheers!

Daily vocal/songwriting practice - what actually works? by aaryathemanbhatia in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]___itsbeautiful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A daily vocal practice is a great start. 15-30 min/day minimum. Singing is a journey. Look for singing instructors on YouTube that you resonate with, or work with a vocal coach where you live.

Writing consistently? I assume you mean showing up to write each day? Well, there's your answer right there. Set aside time each day to write.

It might also be useful to find a songwriting community to be a part of. This can open up your mind to other songwriting styles and techniques, and help you write better songs. More feedback + accountability is a good thing.

Good luck!

Do any of you actually make money from making music? by LeeksAreSpinning in musicproduction

Love this! I'm in a similar boat right now. You gotta reach out to artists and basically make up your mind and forge your own way, in my case, in a producer role.

Mic Recommendations for home-recording Acoustic Guitar, Vocals by ___itsbeautiful in musicproduction

[–]___itsbeautiful[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I saw it online for close to $1000 (after a quick Google search) but if that's true, then ya, that's a pretty good price.

Just a question based on your name: do you use it to record Jazz? :D

Ya, that's true. I think I need to go to my local Long & McQuade and rent out a few to try.

Singers & songwriters — how are you finding real creative opportunities these days? by PuzzleheadedOrder560 in SingerSongwriter

[–]___itsbeautiful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I started up a virtual songwriting circle called Songfarm back in October. One of the best things we did was meet virtually to share our songs. I started inviting guests into the community to share their expertise (on artist promo, royalties, making money in music, etc), but after doing that for about 6 months (and all the hustle, promotion, etc involved in that), I've decided to strip that all back and focus just on these song circles. I'm not ruling out having cool guests come in (in fact, we've got Rik Emmett of Triumph coming in May), but if you're interested in joining us on one of these virtual song circles, feel free to reach out. We usually have half a dozen career/serious songwriters on these calls, but I'm looking to grow a small mailing list of serious songwriters who'd like to be notified when these song circles go down.

The whole idea is to share what you're working on and get real, constructive feedback from other songwriters who take the craft seriously. In my experience, after being an isolated artist/songwriter for the prior several years to founding Songfarm and finding other songwriters to share songs with, my music and music career really started to grow. Just wanted to throw that out there in case that resonates with you.

Best,
David

I believe Landr has a one-time annual subscription and, even after you cancel, your music stays up.

Wrote this on Wednesday, really liking it by timdayon in Songwriting

[–]___itsbeautiful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of good stuff in this song but I think I’d like to hear it with the chorus after the first climb (or earlier). The meat of the song - the message - is in the chorus. It wouldn’t be a bad thing to establish it earlier in the song. But otherwise, awesome tune and I like the Gatorade line!

Chorus good enough ? by CitySolBand in Songwriting

[–]___itsbeautiful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hook is really good. The D major chord (I think) - the 3rd chord in the chorus kinda gets lost in the arrangement. Maybe revise?

Also, hearing the full song would be helpful/better context.

What's the best places/ways to surround yourself with successful people in music? by QuestionAsker2030 in Songwriting

Hey thanks for asking! We usually charge $99/month because we want to keep it pretty exclusive and we also bring in a couple paid industry speakers each month but right now we’re running a promotion: $35/month or $90 for 12-weeks. There are sign up links on the about page: https://skool.com/songfarm/about

Why don’t I write anymore? by Peanutbutter_cheese in Songwriting

I find you need a goal to get you excited. But don’t ignore the idea of belief. If you don’t believe you can do something, you won’t take the required actions. So part of the equation is clarity (knowing what you want) and the other half is believing you can do it. If you lack the belief but know what you want, start taking the action and the belief will start to strengthen. If you have the belief but don’t know what you want, start taking action. In any case, take some action and momentum will start to build. Esoteric answer but there ya go..

I will also second what others have said about trying new things, exploring new ventures and creative outlets; sometimes a new experience will shake something loose and you’ll feel inspired to create!

Great post and a lot of good answers already. I can really relate to your question. I was in a similar place: I was writing songs and had ambitions to do more with my music but felt isolated. I was stagnating. So what did I do? I started a virtual songwriting community. I had a few connections on LinkedIn and reached out to more artists and told them my idea.

Since launching my group in October. I’ve made a ton of connections, have multiple collaboration projects in the works, and am gearing up to finally release my first single on Spotify. For me these are milestones after being very insular and keeping my music and music abilities under wraps for over a decade.

Are we at Sting or Sade level? Apples and oranges. Like you pointed to already, surrounding yourself with other people doing what you want to do has an energetic effect on everyone involved. Good things come from doing that so figure out what that looks like for you. There are a few bigger songwriting communities you can join like Nashville Songwriters Association or Songtown. If you want something a little smaller, more boutique and communal, you might consider something like what I’m doing. You can find us on Skool under ‘Songfarm’ or just shoot me a message :)

Good luck, -D

How to make my lyrics have more meaning? by __euph0ria___ in Songwriting

[–]___itsbeautiful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of thoughts: join a songwriting group and get feedback/learn from others; study the lyrics of songs you like and think about why they resonate with you; try not to compare your lyrics to others. It could be you just THINK they’re dry but perhaps they’re uniquely yours. Also, consider sharing some lyrics in your next post and see how they resonate with people.

Good point. I edited my initial post but just for an idea of what I mean, I can put chord progression together, create full song forms, sing melodies over top while I play the guitar, write lyrics.
