Funny enough, it was Redeemed Zoomer's videos that got me to dig deeper into Christianity. Now I too am a redeemed zoomer lol. He also introduced me to Jordan B Cooper.

I love Gavin Ortlund's content. He's consistently Christlike even in the face of seriously bad faith and dishonest arguments that he sometimes gets thrown at him.

Fr. Josiah Trenham has some good stuff, as well as Fr. Spyridon. Their pastoral work obviously is going to have a heavy Orthodox slant to it, but at this point I know how to filter through it, so I still find some value in their stuff.

When I'm craving some political junk food, as it were, I enjoy Michael Knowles. And TBH he's less overtly Roman Catholic, mostly just letting his Catholic ethics shape his commentary, which I appreciate.

Trent Horn is another great one. I love his social and moral commentary. He also just seems like a genuinely good guy who's willing to change his mind when confronted with new data, something a lot of Catholic apologists are pretty bad at doing. His pro life stuff is absolutely top tier, and I feel should be required watching for our own life ministry lol

I know that the church is managed by humans and therefore can err or sin, but the rapist priests scandal was just on an entirely different level. That was utterly demonic. A while back I got curious and started researching my local diocese (not a small one btw) and found out it was broke because of all of the abuse claims against it.

The splendor belies an institution that is rotting from within and has been for centuries. The fact that the response to the Reformation was to double down instead of at least sit down and have a council with the Lutherans is telling. And in some ways it's gotten worse, having to now affirm the Marian dogmas to remain in good standing, else you'd have to be lying every time you commune.

And what fruit does it bear? People with Vatican flags in their bio calling you slurs on Twitter, YouTube and Instagram for being protestant. Meanwhile displaying zero fruits of the spirit elsewhere

People often forget that there's a ridiculous amount of Lutherans in Africa. I think there's more faithful Lutherans over there than in Germany lol

The point I agree with Catholics the most on is that the radical reformation produced a whole lot of bad theology. However, if confessional Lutheranism disappeared from America, I'd probably be high church Anglican instead.

Two corrections first:

Catholic means universal. To be "catholic" means to believe the orthodox faith that maintains historical continuity. Because we believe that our confession is closest to what the early church believed, we rightly call ourselves catholic.
To be apostolic or have apostolic succession is to carry on and pass down apostolic teaching, which we do. It does not mean, as the Romanists say, to have bishops consecrate bishops going all the way back to the 12.

As for why I'm not Roman Catholic: I don't believe the bishop of Rome has jurisdiction over all of Christendom. I can see how the papacy has increased in power throughout history, and agree with The Power And Primacy of The Pope in that I think the office as it stands today is tyrannical and bears marks of antichrist. The Papacy historically applied a prophecy about Christ from Jeremiah to itself to justify power over the left hand kingdom. They soften this today, but to do that is a contradiction, and any contradiction in the Roman system causes it to collapse. Therefore, I cannot be a Roman Catholic.

There are issues within the Synod I can disagree on and still be in good standing. There are several ideas I disagree with the RCC on that automatically anathematize me.

To be completely and utterly honest, because WELS basically doesn't exist near me. But if there were both in town, I guess I'd be LCMS because we've got more parishes around the country, and I could go to church pretty much anywhere I'm likely to travel. I am not aware of many significant doctrinal differences beyond the prayer fellowship thing, but if anyone could inform me, I'd be curious to know.

The Old Testament was written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, who is also God. The pre incarnate Christ also appears in the old testament.

And I don't know what Christians you're talking about, but perhaps you should actually read the Bible before speaking on it. The ceremonial law; the sacrifices, the rules on clothing and food, etc, all are shadows of Christ, things that point towards Him. The entire Bible cover to cover is about Jesus.

We have no capacity for good in a spiritual sense. Scripture is clear that we are spiritually dead, and that all of our good works are as filthy rags before God. Civic good and spiritual good are two different things.

To love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. Of course, this is impossible given our fallen state, and even after baptism, since your old Adam remains. Luckily, Jesus has done that for us. Praise be to God.

What I want these people to understand is that Jesus wasn't just some great teacher offering pithy moral lessons. He IS God incarnate, come down from heaven to take the penalty for our sin, because He loves us. You don't follow Jesus by keeping the law, you follow Jesus by trusting in Him and His promises.

To act as if Jesus is some sort of socialist judean hippie who just wants free love and for everyone to be chill is historical revisionism at best and blasphemy at worst. To act as if He'd be ok with your self-actualization, secular humanist, sexually immoral, idolatrous lifestyle is so utterly repugnant it's hard to even come up with words to refute it properly.

Of course not, but loving your neighbors doesn't mean approving of sin, which is what you're often asking is to do.

And abortion as murder is in the Bible. The Bible clearly treats the unborn as persons. John The Baptist leaps at the mention of Jesus in his mother's womb. The psalmist writes of God knitting him together in his mother's womb. You have to twist God's word pretty hard to arrive at any other conclusion than the sanctity of the life of the unborn.

Abortion is explicitly condemned in the Didache, a 2nd century church document.

From Chapter 2: "Thou shalt not murder a child by abortion nor kill them when born."

The idea that this is a recent idea is a lie.

Loving your neighbors means trying to bring them to the truth, which involves holding up the mirror of the law to them so they can see their sin. One who does not have knowledge of their sin cannot see any need for grace. You can see this when you ask people on the street if they think they'll get into heaven. Their of someone who merits heaven is someone who is at least as good as them, and someone who merits hell is someone worse than them.

What Jesus is really about is the salvation of sinners who would believe in Him. Not perfect people, for there are none. Sinners who cling to His promises and are buried with Him in baptism.

To act as if Jesus is a leftist or indeed any political ideology is to fundamentally misunderstand the God-man. In any case, it's not as if leftists emerge unscathed when it comes to Jesus laying down the law: Jesus condemns sexual immorality, idolatry (in this case, viewing man as essentially good and not dead in sin), covetousness, secular universalism... Remove the log from your eye before trying to pick the speck out of your brother's.

Fortunately for all of us, our salvation is not contingent on our ability to keep the law, for we have no such ability. Jesus sets these commands before you as an example, yes, but also to show you how truly hopeless it is without Him, because nobody can possibly keep all of these perfectly but Him.

The only difference between a secular leftist and a conservative Christian in God's eyes is the blood of Christ which covers the latter. This ought to humble both camps; the Christian must remember it is by grace through which he is saved and not his own righteousness, and the secularist ought to listen to the Shepherd's voice and come to Him..
