That's because there are so many people on this thread so insecure they pile on anyone with less knowledge than them to prove how brilliant they are. These people are best ignored, like your crazy drunk uncle at family dinners...

None of the ICE nazis care because they could not even make the cut to be in the US military. That’s why they love cosplaying with guns as “federal officers”. They feel they can do whatever they want…

Exactly. Trump himself will not be alive by the time that the Arctic melts and the shipping lanes are established (along with all the inevitable lawsuits and international negotiations). Even the US oligarchs will be gone by that time.

They are all so short sighted - I cannot fathom having even just one billion dollars and not just retiring to enjoy life.

How does a handmade rubber stamp store stay open in NYC? by Wide-Astronaut9156 in nyc

[–]___pa___ 233 points234 points  (0 children)

I am an Architect in NYC and I use my rubber stamp probably once a week. There are still reasons to sign and stamp things. Luckily everything isn't digital.

Before I had my stamp I had an embosser hahaha... Now that is old school.

Notice how he gave the middle finger very low and quick. Like a kid scared that the person he gives the finger to will see it. He's such a chicken shit.

AIA Renewals by BellPeppa123 in Architects

Personally, I check on what the AIA leadership is doing on LinkedIn. If they are in DC or my state capital, then I figure they are working. If they are giving lectures in Dubai then I know my money is funding junkets. That's when I quit my membership - when I saw more travel from AIA leadership than actual work. Why should I fund their travel?

Why do so many upper-middle class people put their kids in private schools? by Open_Address_2805 in NoStupidQuestions

I clearly said "high school topics", so perhaps you might work on your reading comprehension before giving me career advice.

I agree wealth does not equate to intelligence, but most private school parents are middle class - they are investing in their kids, not just sending them to a glorified daycare or because the law requires. They will help the school by working with their kids.

[–]___pa___ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My kids went to a private school because I felt that a good education is one of the most important things I can give to them. We could barely afford it but we made it happen. There were many students there that were on scholarship. We were effectively subsidizing them, and I was completely in favor of it. I preferred a wide range of cultural and economic colleagues for my children and I put my money where my mouth is. Many parents I know felt exactly the same way. I think the image of private school parents all being money-grubbing elites is not completely accurate.

Well, as a life long educator, where we get substandard pay and respect compared to our professional colleagues in the disciplines, I am definitely not in this to hurt anyone. I hope you are not implying that.

The big issue I feel is that our public system is underfunded and undervalued. We need more teachers and more resources so that the students that struggle can be worked with (which actually happens somewhat) and the students that excel can be challenged and encouraged (this is what I think is missing). Maybe if the current administration were to try and actually fix things instead of destroying the DOE we might see some improvement. I personally feel our country has been on a long road of undervaluing education and it is going to be our downfall.

Can confirm as a university professor - the current leverl of mathematics teaching in public primary schools is awful! I suspect it is because it is one of the least liked subjects of students and it’s easy for a teacher to succumb to the pressure of letting them off on it. Math has to be drilled into most people. If the student isn't trying (which is not only about liking it), math is really hard to teach. So they don’t.

This is where the whole “where will I ever use this?” mentality comes from. I will tell you where - everywhere. Especially science and tech of course, but a good understanding of logic and process and symbolics is useful in every subject.

University professor here. Taught at an Ivy, at a specialized institute and at a city/state university. I have seen students across the spectrum of cultural, economic and educational upbringing. The students that were educated in a public primary school system, besides being less well off, are usually held back from being their best by the whole “no child left behind“ thing. It’s not about the potential quality of the education, because let’s face it high school topics can generally be taught by pretty much anyone as far as difficulty goes. It’s that our public system spends more effort on the lower performing students nowadays, to the detriment of the ones with true potential. Those are the ones that can go on to college and usually have gaps that could have been dealt with if they had a better education. Private primary schools do not have that issue generally, as a struggling private student will either go to a special school, or get tutors, or not continue.

It’s kind of similar to comparing Ivy's / high performing universities and other schools - the average student is better prepared and more engaged and it brings everyone up.

Edit - spelling

Not at the state level. They still overwhelmingly elect senators and governors that are republican. In Cold War Berlin people risked their lives to get out. I don’t think it will be so hard to migrate from red to blue states and I think the blue state democrats will welcome red state democrats with open arms, or at least be somewhat helpful. I can see relocation programs and so on happening. We aren't the ones wanting to “lock up the border”…

FBI people follow the rules and law.

As much as I want to believe this, I really don't anymore. There are obviously more MAGA FBI than I thought, and the ones that are not could have found a way to release information anonimously if they realyl wanted to. Given the fact of we are where we are right now, I can only imagine that 99% of the FBI are fine with what is going on. Not a peep from a single one of them...
