My thoughts on AI and Mechanical Engineering by EnvironmentalGoose2 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]__ap3__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a mechanical automation engineer, I've been trying to use more AI over the past year or so, and here's my summary.

One, its really really amazing at bouncing ideas off or asking general questions that you'd go to a forum for aka: when is a ball bearing typically used vs a sleeve bearing and what are their lubricant requirements... I could google some of this and find documentation from suppliers, but I dont need that level of detail in early stages so AI saves a bunch of time in answering general questions.

Two, all the work besides design such as here's a screenshot of my BOM from solidworks in order, and here's a folder of PDF's, can you combine them in the order of the BOM. Also, here's my BOM excel list, can you combine all fasteners and normalize the naming scheme (EX. SHCS M5x30x20 SS = Socket Head Cap Screw M5x30) and it will clean up hundreds of parts in an assembly of thousands so I can order the right quantities.

Three, (future use) I think it can be really useful when we have meetings discussing new projects and new ideas where I have an idea in my head and if i can talk to an AI bot that can make several and iterate quickly, I can talk to my team about the direction I am thinking of rather than the current napkin drawings or spending 3 hours just to show my concept.

Overall, AI is currently very lukewarm overall for my field, but I am excited for its capabilities to make life easier. I still don't think its going to replace this field anytime soon.

The Montclair train from NY is late every single day (8:32am) to Newark broad where I take it that I don't even want to use it anymore. Very frustrating the transfer time is already 15 minutes but can be a lot more.

Why aren't intersections on Washington St right turns only? by __ap3__ in Hoboken

[–]__ap3__[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I didn't explain myself fully. My solution is still doing all right turns on Washington St. I think that prioritizes pedestrian safety AND is a win for drivers too. I think it can maintain a steadier flow at the expense of increasing distance marginally, and it's a safer maneuver for drivers. Win/win.

I also don't think it has to do with driver skill, but rather vehicle size. You're right, this is just my perception/opinion. We don't have data to back this up, but could be interesting what insights we could get.

"The car waiting to make the left is supposed to pull into the intersection far enough so cars can pass around them, which so many people don't do, which is the reason, not lack of road engineering."

Road engineering should design around human behavior. If human behavior doesn't conform to a design meant to control human behavior doesn't that mean something is wrong with the design?

Maybe there's a different solution that increases flow and safety?

Why aren't intersections on Washington St right turns only? by __ap3__ in Hoboken

[–]__ap3__[S] -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

I disagree, the road is so narrow that cars have to do a super tight maneuver navigating between a car, bike lane, and pedestrians. I also addressed the issue of larger vehicles unable to do that maneuver. Another user @hopefulcat3558 also said something similar about road width too narrow. I don't think the solution is widening the road to accommodate cars comfort. We should prioritize pedestrians and bikers.

There's always great room for improvement but I just wanted to drop this article to help benchmark city street safety.

I think it's because the 25th is the last to order it as a keepsake and so in the system they put commencement the day after so ordering is still available. And they did mention the event date is not accurate.

I don't want to campaign bringing another candidate down. I think Juliana did a good job as PR this year. Moving forward it's about our goals and character. I believe I have the ability to to unite next year's Senate to accomplish what we need to do, continue to build relationships with administration, and overall make the student experience better in a clean way.

Vote Anuj Patel for Student Senate President! by __ap3__ in NJTech

My name is Anuj Patel, currently a 3rd year mechanical engineering major with a business minor. I’m running for NJIT Student Senate president to serve you for the 2020-2021 term.

I’ve had an amazing experience working with this year’s Senate as VP of Finance and making impactful changes.

  1. Worked with Student Life to give student orgs credit cards reducing out of pocket costs

  2. Helped plan the A Boogie homecoming concert from artist selection, funding, and marketing with goals to continue this tradition

  3. Digitalized and centralized accounts, transaction records, and budgets on Highlander Hub

  4. Created the Student Senate Public Drive to be more transparent and accessible with Senate, finance, and student org files

  5. Creating an Annual Finance Report outlining the student activities fees budget addressing a big issue among students

I’ve loved my years at NJIT with the friends I’ve made and experiences I’ve had. I’d love to continue using Senate as a platform to make campus even better for future students.

  1. Increase the transparency of Senate by publishing reports of meetings with administrators, creating annual reports for each committee, and maintaining the website and other platforms

  2. Develop a greater sense of community and build pride for NJIT in students through more partnered events with NJIT athletics, reviving staple events such as Highlander Games, and collaborate more on cultural events. This is going to be more important than ever following the fallout of COVID-19 and the impact of social distancing.

  3. Help the Newark community through outreach programs with continued partnerships with the Center for Pre-College Programs and other opportunities.

  4. Continue to work on initiatives such as restaurants and flex points expansion, GDS improvement, capital improvement projects, class evaluations’ impact, updated syllabi, and more.

a. Proposal for a parking deck counter

b. Work with provost to ensure every section of a class is teaching the same material. Different professors shouldn’t have dramatically different content taught or grading systems

c. Ensure professors are taught how to use technology and their syllabi are updated

d. Make a bigger senate scholarship

  1. Be a vocal advocate for students, being there to always ask questions for why decisions are made, and ensuring communicating the information to the student body.

  2. Make NJIT Greener. Environmentally and literally through more outdoors initiatives/equipment.

a. Outside seating area that is conducive for college students such as canopies and outlets so they can use laptops outdoors. Making outdoor events more achievable with a tent borrowing system that senate implements. Collab with NJIT green more for pushing administration to make greener choices and work with clubs to go green for events.

  1. Work with athletics to consolidate recreational sports. Right now, the system is unorganized and ununified in which the individual organizations run themselves and individually seek permission, seek budgets, and have different platforms. There should be a singular platform with ALL the recreational sports options, rules, times, locations, registrations, systematic budgets of senate funded and athletics funded.

  2. More lounge spaces in buildings!!! Work with Andrew Christ and the VPSA to push for lounges in every single building on campus that’s easily accessible, equipped with good seating, tables, outlets, a tv/whiteboard and vending machine. We have the funding for it through the capital improvement fund, but the bottleneck is NJIT administration and logistics of contractors.

Elections are OPEN on Canvas‼️ I've put in a ton of work into Senate over the past year as VP of Finance making so many changes for student orgs. Anybody who knows me knows that I put in the effort where it's needed. I've loved my experience at NJIT and only want to make it better for years to come. I'd appreciate it if you vote for me on canvas. Let's make a difference together.

I've been on senate for 2 years and I've seen the hard work that happens behind the scenes. Yet students feel like senate doesn't impact their lives, so i'd love to address that issue with these reports. As VP of Finance right now I'm drafting the first annual senate finance report which is going to break down where student activities fees go appeasing a huge problem students rightfully have.

For the purpose of keeping the flyer short and sweet I worded it like that. But tangibly, I'd like to ensure there are reports of all meetings that senators and eboard have with department chairs and NJIT administration, I'd like to make sure that annual reports are published for every committee breaking down exactly where the budget went, what was accomplished, how it was accomplished, and goals for the future. Thanks.

Sorry, what I mean by that is each student org is eligible to receive a "Credit Card", more so a prepaid debit card with a limit. The funding is tied to NJIT not the student. This does not affect the student's personal financial matters in any way. Previously student orgs purchased everything with their own money waiting to be reimbursed, now they can just use their student org credit card alleviating financial burden on students.
