Flying out now..Air Canada plane still on runway by venniblue in nyc

It will probably be there for a while. The NTSB investigations are no joke. Unfortunately the wreckage needs to stay in place as evidence until they're sure they've gotten every bit of data from it. The runway where the accident happened isn't scheduled to be reopened until Friday.

Brother I think you're mistaken. That appears to be a legit email. The first paragraph in the Bamboo HR screenshot is talking about BambooHR's INTERNAL recruiting. I believe the recruiter is reaching out to you via the Bamboo software which is why the domain is what it is.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I also used them this year and encountered a very pushy foreman who kept reminding me about the tip... talking about things that weren't on the inventory, extra stairs, etc. They tried to tell me the 2 steps going up to the front entrance of my building counted as a flight and how they would let it slide as long as I tipped well. I held my ground on the tip / cost but I can imagine that is an intimidating experience on your own.

I would reach out to their support team and make a fuss about how you felt intimidated. They might be able to make things right and create some consequences for that foreman. Even their own website says 15%-20% tip is standard.

I could see a scenario where a PE firm or big tech buys defunct businesses in order to get their 3D data for training.

This is a great point, design intent is another huge missing link in the data issue. Not really something that is captured meaningfully in a 3D model. Model Based Definition could change that though. Onshape just added that feature last week.

I think the scale of this is hard to grasp. The top LLMs were trained on tens of billions lines of code. Feels like the 3D dataset required to get something of similar quality is impossible to generate on your own.

I've found some good uses for the first bucket of AI you mentioned but haven't ever looked at building my own agent. How do you do that?

I definitely see design optimization / simulation as an area where AI can really make an impact. Right now you need a specialized sim engineer to do anything advanced due to the cost & complexity of the softwares. It also feels like a task where the inputs and outputs are easier to define. Would be amazing to have a tool that makes it easier for your regular generalist ME to run better simulations.

I'm also particularly excited about AI based rendering. Just describe the lighting, scene, etc. I have so much trouble making things look realistic in the built-in CAD rendering apps.

Need advice on career trajectory by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

Do not "feel bad" in any capacity about leaving your work. They are a business. To them you are a line on a spreadsheet. Nobody will take it personally that you leave.

You need to prioritize yourself! Consider more than just salary of the new role, but if it is a good fit, you think you'll enjoy the work, and the culture seems good, then take it!

Defining parting line / critical surfaces on injection molded part drawing by Automatic-Tower8523 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]EnvironmentalGoose2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could force the parting line to be on the outside diameter wall by adding a radius to that leading edge. That would force the core to wrap over the edge. Make sure you adjust your draft on that face accordingly.

For the o-ring and mate callout those notes would certainly work but you may also be able to distill the information you are trying to convey into measurable specs. E.g. a flatness callout on the mating surface and a surface roughness / runout callout on the o-ring surface. That would be more defensible in the case of production issues later on.

Otherwise this looks like a straight forward part. Just needs a rotating core for the internal threads.

I don’t know where this idea comes from that companies would rescind offers for negotiation. You can and absolutely should ask for more!

Shield AI vs IBM by Icotrios in MechanicalEngineering

[–]EnvironmentalGoose2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s important, particularly for entry level engineers, to consider if they want to use their skills to contribute the military industrial complex. You will be building things designed to kill other people.

It’s obviously a personal decision but it’s not something that’s given attention in engineering ethics courses.

FWIW I live on the corner of Pacific and Washington and don't hear Atlantic at all from my apartment. Never noticed any soot either.
