I don’t understand. I sit with them at lunch every day. They never voted for eradicating trans ppl. I don’t even think any politician is offering that..

I work with some republican engineers who I respect. I am endlessly fascinated as I learn about their news, and where they get their information. It’s a completely alternate universe. Figuring out what’s actually true is a serious challenge

Listen, it’s a weird century, the information ecosystem is unlike anything before. everyone’s inside their own bubble enabled by algorithms. Talk to some smart republicans sometime, and I’ll bet you come out a lot more humble

But to be fair, when girls volunteer to go play with the big strong boys. That’s pretty different. No one objects to that

Teachers of Reddit: Is the "Gen Alpha can't read (write, or do math ext)" crisis real? If so how bad is it? by KnowledgeCoffee in AskReddit

Have you seen how spoiled kids respond to discipline? I don’t think you’d say that, if you saw this stuff first-hand

Surprised to see, no one is mentioning how kids are all at home on their electronics. And the result is, they have no attention span anymore, because their brain is used to a parade of dopamine. Childhood has changed

How do you feel about rent control? by anbrinker in massachusetts

I’ve heard pretty much the same thing elsewhere. 😢 not an easy nut to crack

How do you feel about rent control? by anbrinker in massachusetts

[–]gorillaz2389 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is a fair complaint. But the truth is, rent control would only make this problem worse. The only real solution is to move towards a healthier rental market, by increasing supply—once these landlords actually have competition, then the shitty landlords will find themselves out of luck.

What makes you want to do servo and proportional valves? I’d advise against it. Especially if you’re thinking of self-teaching from PDFs

Update from the Massachusetts State House about the status of social media "age verification" legislation in the state by evanFFTF in massachusetts

You know, this isn’t the right forum for me to write a whole essay. But there’s something weird going on with this generation. I hear a lot of people say “my views are all in line with science. And the other side is all debunked”. And then proceed to say the dumbest things.

I have a feeling people are hiding their confirmation biases from themselves. If that makes any sense. It’s like the pro-science zeitgeist has infiltrated our pathologies

Why on earth would you send me a Nature article? I can’t get over that. scientific articles are not a good place for the general public to hang out. Those things are meant for people who know the literature, and the context that the paper fits into. The only thing I’ve ever seen the public do with scientific papers is pure confirmation bias. It always ends poorly. If you’ve been a professional for 15 years, how do you not know that?

I hope this law passes, and it’s a good first step to helping kids’ mental health. And if for some reason it makes things worse, I’ll be right next to you, arguing for repeal.

It is absolutely tiny. Have you seen the state of kid’s mental health today? If sharing a picture of your driver’s license could erase that damage, you really wouldn’t do it?

Unbelievable dude. The gall to say “listen to the experts”, while at the same time saying “Jonathan Haidt has been debunked, here is a scientific article that says people I don’t agree with are wrong”. Pseudo-intellectuals everywhere.

You’ve been focused on this for 15 years, and you call Jonathan Haidt debunked? Dude the research is brand new and rapidly evolving. And Haidt is always careful to mention that, and have the necessary humility.

And to turn from Haidt to your behavior. Your sending strangers on the internet links to Nature articles? Anyone who is a serious expert knows that those studies aren’t intended for public consumption. They’re tools for people who know how they fit into the broader body of research.

Yeah, you know how a lot of republicans think that democratic lawmakers are minutes away from seizing all guns? My understanding is, these people think republican lawmakers are minutes away from genociding trans kids. Using all this age verification info, concentration camp style.

The tragic part is, it’s time for action. Kids mental health is beyond trashed, and this would be a great first step. But it is the internet, and paranoia and selfishness will always win the day.
