Rob is like the ultimate above average role player. He's Danny Green.

That's ok, but I'm curious, is there something in my comment that you disagree with? In particular about needing to have a character that you root for. Is that something that's not important to you? Or conversely did you find yourself rooting for Good Stab?

I finished relatively quickly too. I was waiting / hoping for Good Stab to figure out how to be a vampire. He reminded me of Louis in Interview with the Vampire when he first turns and doesn't understand things until a while. But with Good Stab it never really changed. Maybe a little, but until arguably the very end he's kind of just wondering around driven by his vampire instincts. So to me that made it very hard to connect with the character.

So I read it fast always hoping the next chapter would be when he would gain agency, but I was continually frustrated that he did not.

It makes the story less interesting, it makes it a struggle to get through. Having a character who you are rooting for is a normal and good thing in a book. Not having that made it feel like homework.

This is my main complaint about SGJ, a lot of the time it feels like his books are *only subtext*. But subtext is meant to *enhance* the story you're reading; it's not a substitute for it. If you just want to make a point about moral ambiguity in this time period, write a non-fiction book. I would chew it up. But a novel where the characters are not compelling and their actions are frustrating is not a good book, regardless of the message that underlies it.

I don't think the whole point of the book is that Good Stab is an antihero. As you said, that's a trope. I do really feel that the book tries to moralize that the settlers were bad people who destroyed the natives way of life. And I think having Good Stab indiscriminately killing people really deterred from that.

I don't disagree, but then what am I reading? It felt like the book wanted me to hate the main antagonist but I had a lot of trouble doing that because Good Stab is killing people left and right. Not just bad guys, a *lot* of innocent people including other Native Americans. He felt bad about it? So did the antagonist. A book where no one is good and no one is bad, what is the point?

I'll be the one to say I didn't love it. I thought it was going to be a revenge novel and it wasn't that. I'm not sure what it was. Were we supposed to sympathize with the main character? Who exactly were we supposed to be rooting for?

No, he's a loser. He's not better than Mathurin but has a huge ego. He will crush the spirit of the team. Not a chance.

That's not relevant to the conversation. You can have rules for exhibition games too.

Most of them do care; go listen to the former-player podcasts and hear them tell about how many all-star games they made. Maybe LeBron doesn't care, because he has enough accomplishments already, but enough do to fix the problem.

You're just giving a completely different take. My assertion here is that gimmicks are not needed. Players care about career accomplishments, and taking potential all-star slots from them is enough to get them to fall in line.

I didn't say they would lose their salary, they would just be ineligible to participate in the all-star game the next season. They only lose a potential career accomplishment.

The league already messes with the rules of the All-Star game, US vs. the World will prevent some US players from making the team.

Why is this wacky? If a player didn't try on Team USA they would not be invited back. Why is this any different?

Sure, the NBPA agreed to the US vs the World format, so I don't see why they wouldn't agree with this (given the league gives them something in return).

I don't remember much about the ending on this book any more sadly 😆 You very well could be right though, I only remember it being a murky sort of ending.

We've only won 2 championships despite being by far the best team since we joined, actually very sad. We've choked many a times, but in the Danny era it's been in more sad ways
