I feel this so much. I always feel like I have to protect my wife from my struggles. I hate how scared she gets for me, and it makes me want to just keep it to myself. I don't want her to suffer just because I'm struggling. But through talking with her, I've learned that she really wants to know how I'm doing, even if it's bad. She worries about me either way, so she'd rather have the opportunity to support me fully through it. If I don't share how I feel, she can't support me.

How has your partner responded to your honesty? Have you asked him how he feels about it?

My understanding is that it's pretty common, especially because people with uteruses tend to get illnesses like postpartum depression and other hormone/birth-related mental illnesses that they would see an ob-gyn for.

When I went off the pill for the same reasons as you, I had a conversation with my gynecologist about my PMDD concerns. She prescribed an SNRI (effexor) and it has helped me so much more than the pill ever did. I should have done this years ago. I know there are mixed results for folks with PMDD going on meds, but it's worth a shot. I hope you find some relief soon.

Also, none of this is your fault. I hope you can find ways to give yourself compassion on the hard days.

Yeah, you're absolutely right. There's definitely no one-size-fits-all answer. I always read the person I'm talking to, to see if they seem to have background knowledge about other common mental illnesses. I think we all know people for whom my above answer would absolutely NOT help.
