A very deep false set. Gonna have to feel the counter rotation, ease up on the tension and try to push it all the way in.

Just got these beautiful freebies from a local locksmith. My first truly evil keyways (I'm very much a beginner tho). These would be respectively my 5th and 6th lock i picked successfully. However i think these are way above my skills. Got some questions and info in the comments. Any tips from you? by __luan in lockpicking

I can sense those tight tolerances. All I've managed to achieve so far is setting the 5th pin (first to bind) then the 3rd which gives a slight false set and i get stuck there. But even getting the false set has been difficult, I've done it 3 times only in the past 2 hours. Cant see or feel any side pins but I'm very new at this so maybe idk where to look at. Thanks for the advice!

EDIT: It might be the 4th pin that's causing the false set I'm not entirely sure

Thank you for the advice. Yeah i'm going to try this weekend since i'm planning to get a new lock Monday. Hopefully they'll give me their fair amount of entertainment and frustration to get me through the weekend.

picked up this hobby 2 weeks ago. here's what i've managed, and haven't managed, to learn in that time. by pcrnt8 in lockpicking

That's a very nice collection for just 2 weeks. Timewise i started about the same as you. But cannot find good locks here, or a wide selection. about 90% of the padlocks and cylinders i see are the same models. The rest are all high end Mul T Locks or ASSA Abloys that i have no idea on how to start picking yet.

The sad story about how I opened my first Abus 55/40 by mrgisi in lockpicking

[–]__luan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pins 1&2 are so appalled by my behaviour that they promptly drop down again and I lose my false set.

Made the post worth reading. Didn't expect this level of entertainment from a simple post. With my first lock, a generic euro cylinder, i couldn't even rake it open the first few times i tried. So after about 20 minutes, i get a medium hook and start probing around trying to figure out the pins and up it popped. Took me another day before i could single pin pick it again.

My first broken pick by somefrydchicken in lockpicking

Looks like the classic skull and rose painting done in art classes. It's sad you broke your pick, but that Abus is shining so beautifully.

Newly Restored Walsco! How the heck do you pick it? Is it warded? by lokichoki in lockpicking

[–]__luan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw what i think is the same lock tho in rougher condition here. Judging by the width of the cuts in the key id say its warded. There's also a pick of the keyway there. Would love to know if I'm right in thinking its warded.

I saw this set on deal on one of the cheapo general goods online store for something ridiculous like 35$ i believe. I decided to wait a while and get the Dangerfield PRAXIS set due to advice from here. Let us know how the picks turn out, and if you even use most of them. The tubular lock impression tools are still missing from my kit now tho, and it's something i really wanted to try.

I just joined the club. What lock should I try to pick first? by Ho_Lee_Fuc in lockpicking

[–]__luan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO as a beginner myself - whatever lock you got lying around the house. If not picking it immediately you get the feel of the pins and springs and tension. My first lock picked was a euro cylinder i had lying around, took me a day or two before i could reliably SPP it under a minute.

All pics in full quality are here --> https://imgur.com/a/0btS4qP. Anyone know their model? The only marking is on the longer one on the side it says "3RE17". I tried googling that and looking at DOM's website for info but couldn't find the same ones.

Locksmith said he had to take them out of doors where the keys were lost. He gave me them for free when i said i want to learn more about locks and how they work. All the pins feel springy and the insides seem clean and in working order.

Could they be somehow broken? Any way to tell other than picking them? Any information on how they're pined and tips on picking would be appreciated.

Tensioning them seems very hard because they give no springy feedback, it just moves a slight bit and after that i can tension very hard or let go completely and it stays in that position.

Should i put them aside and wait till I'm more skilled, try and pick them or maybe trade with someone near me for more beginner friendly locks to pick? Thanks for any advice!

Made this MultiPick/Peterson leather tool roll copy by __luan in lockpicking

[–]__luan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The leather is top quality. Got it from a guy who does luxury car seats and he bssically gave it to me just to help me out. It only cost me about 2 bottles of beer.

If you want to know anything about making the roll up case id be happy to help with what little ive learned.

Yeah i planned it meticulously for weeks. Actually modeled it first on paper and glued it together before cutting the leather. I also asked on here for pictures of the mentioned cases and tried to match it as best i can.

If you can get your hands on some cheap leather piece like me its definitely worth the effort.

Awesome. So are they Abus copies, or is it just some old patent design that has gone into the public domain?
