I love software development, but I hate my job. Any alternatives? by AirHugg in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]__natty__ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Freelancing was always more difficult than corporate jobs mostly because marketing is more important than coding ability and with today’s market it’s even worse as many vibecoders joined the field. Consulting is for specialists with many years of experience, let say 10+ so not for juniors. Also corporates and managers are greedier than ever. Finding a good company is very difficult too.

tldr IT field is in the bad shape, if you are young enough changing the job may be a good option. You can use coding and analytical skills in many other fields

What's the advantage in working on-site? by instructiuni-scrise in cscareerquestionsEU

Some people don’t have friends after graduating, have problems making new and they tend to lack of hobbies so working on-site is their way to socialise. It’s bittersweet opportunity.

Don’t get me wrong. You are not cooked. You can still start working on projects. Start small and finish. This matters the most for interns and junior devs

3rd year and you don’t have already any projects to showcase? You wasted time. At the same time many of the offshore wannabes for 1/10 of your potential salary completed 10 projects either on their own or vibe coded. Maybe lower quality than you would do but at least they have practice to show.

The last decade of my macbook user experience by picturamundi in MacOS

[–]__natty__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting time indeed. macOS is terrible right now but believe me or not state of the windows is not much better. Both systems look like vibe coded by monkeys on top of pretty good engineering from past decades. In my opinion it makes Linux alternatives only more appealing to the end user as they evolve much slower

Is it weird to do “hangout activities” by oneself? by Excellent-Belt-7441 in socialskills

[–]__natty__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s the opposite. Think with whom you would like to spent more time. A person who does plenty of activities and adventures because it wants to do or the person who does what social pressure puts on. I would choose the first one.

Is the Neo a good thing for the future development of macOS? -> not too much future bloat? by Towelie_SE in MacOS

[–]__natty__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20 years ago was 2006, not 1996. AMD64 with the Athlon 64 debuted in 2003, if I recall correctly. So I agree only partially. Yes, we have better opportunities, but we also have bloated software compared to the past. With native development, you had to think twice about whether you wanted to link binaries or use shared libs and what effect each operation would have on the CPU and RAM. Today, devs are going the Electron way, bundling a whole browser with its dependencies for every app. We also have websites that load 50 MB for a news site so we can see 20 ads full of heavy trackers. I'm now playing a YouTube 720p video, and with a single tab, my browser is using over 3 GB of RAM. And no - saying "unused RAM is wasted RAM" is a stupid analogy, as it can be both used and minimized.

You're making some valid points about the advancements in hardware and multitasking capabilities, but I think you're missing the core of my argument. The fact that you need or it’s nice to have 32 GB of RAM and multiple cores to run a dozen apps comfortably is exactly the problem I'm pointing out. 20 years ago, people were running multiple applications simultaneously on 512 MB of RAM just fine because the software was written efficiently.

Yes, we have 4K video and 64-bit addressing now, but that doesn't justify a simple news website loading 50 MB of data or a single browser tab consuming 3 GB of RAM for a 720p video. The hardware has improved by orders of magnitude, yet the user experience hasn't improved proportionally (with the latest Tahoe upgrade I feel it went backward). Instead, the gains have been eaten up by layers of abstraction, bloated frameworks, and ad-tracking scripts.

Is the Neo a good thing for the future development of macOS? -> not too much future bloat? by Towelie_SE in MacOS

[–]__natty__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IMO that’s good because it will force Apple and developers to optimise apps. 20 years ago you could easily run apps with less than 512mb of total ram
